German retail magnate missing in Alps - reports

BERLIN (Reuters) - Tengelmann retail group chief Karl-Erivan Haub, whose family is among Germany's wealthiest, has been missing since Saturday when he failed to return from an off-piste skiing tour in the Alps, German and Swiss media reported on Tuesday.

Spiegel magazine cited a Tengelmann spokeswoman as saying a search was underway for the 58-year-old, who has run the group which owns the OBI home improvement chain and KiK fashion discounter since 2000.

The Handelsblatt daily cited a letter to Tengelmann employees from his brother Christian saying the family had not given up hope, noting that Karl-Erivan was a very experienced skier and mountaineer.

Switzerland's Blick newspaper said the family had alerted Swiss authorities after Karl-Erivan had failed to return to his hotel in the resort of Zermatt after he set off from a lift on the Matterhorn mountain on Saturday morning.

He was training, according to a German article

According to Blick, Haub is a passionate ski alpinist and wanted to train for the so-called Glacier patrol. For years the sporty entrepreneur participated in this traditional ski touring race. The military organized event will be held on April 17 this year.

Haub had a meeting at 4 pm on Saturday at the Swiss ski resort in Zermatt, but had not appeared there, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.
Saturday night, his cell phone gave the last signal.

'off piste"......very experienced or not, was he skiing alone ??
Yes, I think so. He wanted to train for the „Patrouille des Glaciers “. They pinged his cellphone, it went dead the same evening. [emoji853]

Yes looks like he was alone.

Mr Haub was skiing alone on Saturday at an altitude of 3820m

Favre said Haub was skiing on his own and since the area where he disappeared includes glaciers, it was possible he might have fallen into a crevasse, Blick reported.

bbm This morning there's a storm:

A strong storm in the Alps is hampering efforts to find a German billionaire who has been missing on the famed Matterhorn peak for days.

The dpa news agency reported Thursday that the head of the rescue effort, Anjan Truffer, said the weather has meant teams have not been able to move out in the morning as planned.

Yes, they also said on German TV there is not a big chance to find him alive but police is also open to the possibility of an abduction (after all he‘s a billionaire).

That thought crossed my mind as well. Abduction or murder are possibilities. Especially since he was alone.

Karl-Erivan Haub was last seen on Saturday morning as he headed up a mountain lift with skis and a daypack
Prosecutors are also involved in the case but spokesman Dominic Lehner said there was no evidence yet to speculate whether "there is a crime or just a tragic accident."

Could he have been intercepted once up there and taken away another route?

On N-TV there was an expert of the region saying the most likely possibility is that he fell into a crevasse. But they cannot exclude anything right now. His family is also financially supporting searches and remain positive he‘s found alive and that the search can resume after the storm is gone.

I think an accident seems more likely, especially given the glacial terrain. However if police are considering abduction or foul play, they may have a reason.
Terrible, it's been 4 or 5 days. If he perished I hope it was quick and not that he was trapped in a crevasse.
Still hoping for a miracle.....

Yes an accident is most likely. But it's good LE is keeping an open mind just in case.

In the article I linked above the doctor of the S&R team says that even though Karl only had a daypack with him if he managed to stay warm there's a chance to still find him alive. Let's hope! I wonder whether he had any emergency supplies in his daypack, a blanket maybe?

Video describes his role in the redevelopment in Tacoma, and his gift of $20 million to the Tacoma Art Museum. He is well liked in Tacoma. I'm thinking he has a home there, maybe lives in Tacoma..

Also couple of pictures in the Zermatt area....like looking for a needle in a haystack....:(

He was born in Tacoma.

His parents visited Tacoma in the 1950’s and decided to have their children born in the United States.

The family donated millions to redevelopment efforts in downtown Tacoma. Their support helped establish UW Tacoma, the Museum of Glass, and the expansion of the Tacoma Art Museum.

“We’re really, really lucky the Haubs came to Tacoma,” said Tacoma Art Museum Executive Director David Setford.

The Haub Family Galleries at the museum house more than 200 pieces of art from the family’s personal collection. Approximately $20 million in donations paid for the additional wing for the museum.

Haub’s father, Erivan Haub, passed away in March.

There's no suggestion that he might have committed suicide? Grief does drive some people to it.
Good point. I know he‘s a tough and intelligent cookie when it comes to business but I don‘t know how his father‘s death affected him. He once said he remembers his father saying „Haben kommt von Halten“ (means as much as „Having (something) comes from keeping (something)“) and that he learned working hard and being focused from him.

I think I've seen enough missing people on here either by hiking or skiing. I say invest in a GPS tracker of some kind. Then if you're alone or with a group, you might have a chance [emoji20]

Search resumes for billionaire missing in Swiss Alps
https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/world/search-resumes-for-billionaire-missing-in-swiss-alps-1.3883544
BERLIN - Swiss rescuers say they're resuming their search for a German billionaire who has been missing in the Alps since last weekend.
Rescue effort leader Anjan Truffer told the dpa news agency Friday helicopters and foot patrols were being dispatched to the Matterhorn peak where Karl-Erivan Haub was last seen April 7 as he headed up a mountain lift.
[...]
Rescuers say it's not clear where he went missing and they're searching an area of over 240 square kilometres (93 sq. miles).
Haub was only wearing light training clothes and carrying a daypack when he went missing and authorities say the chances of finding him alive are low.

I have not seen it being suggested but his phone being either turned off or running out of battery right after he left gave me pause. Wouldn't he have made sure that he at least has a working phone? He's obviously an intelligent person, so the phone being unreachable is a bit out of character imo.
