Texas - Coronavirus COVID-19 #2

As Texas COVID-19 cases climb, President-elect Joe Biden introduces plan

“As the numbers continue to climb, President-elect Joe Biden is getting to work to tackle the deadly virus. He posted about it on Sunday on his transition website.

His initial plan calls for doubling the number of testing sites, investing in rapid at-home tests, creating a nationwide pandemic dashboard and mobilize 100,000 Americans for contact tracing.

His plan also calls for all governors to issue a mask mandate.

"We still have opportunities to get this under control and drive those numbers down, but that's going to be left up to the individual, it's nothing the mayor, county judge, [or] governor can do," said Dr. David Persse, the city of Houston's health authority.“

“As Biden makes the transition, it's not clear whether President Donald Trump's administration will grant Biden's new task force access to the federal agencies. But, work with the governors could begin as soon as possible.“

Harris Co. Judge Lina Hidalgo on rising cases: 'Another pull-back is necessary'

"We've got to get it under control once and for all," said Hidalgo. "Already enough lives have been lost. It's setting ourselves up for greater economic pain, deaths and illnesses. We now know inevitably another pull-back is necessary. It's going to be coming soon, I'm sure."

Average number of daily new cases up 250% in Harris County, judge says

“In her remarks during a briefing on Tuesday, Hidalgo announced the recent trends regarding the virus in Harris County, which she called "alarming and deadly."

"Don't invite COVID to Thanksgiving dinner," Turner urged, suggesting foregoing larger gatherings would be worth living another year.“

"I know we're more than eight months into this crisis, and as a community, we've been beat up and bruised, we've grown tired and we're hungry to go back to normal," said Hidalgo. "It's human nature to get complacent, to want to give in, to be tired, that's normal, but we can't do that right now."“

El Paso Faces Surging COVID-19 Deaths as Thanksgiving Celebrations Loom
As deaths mount in the Texas border town, one local funeral director worries large Thanksgiving gatherings could push funeral home capacity over the brink.

Nov. 25, 2020

“With the city's morgues overwhelmed with dead bodies, dozens of National Guard members arrived to assist over the weekend. On Tuesday, Samaniego announced a new curfew for the county over the holiday week, which Texas Gov. Greg Abbott agreed to.“

[...]

“What have the past few weeks been like there at the funeral home?

It's very sad because we're seeing people that shouldn't be passing away from this unfortunately passing away. You see healthy people, you see families that we've talked to that were like, 'You know we were just in Ruidoso [New Mexico] last week horseback riding, and three days later he's gone.' We've had [families] where they lost three family members within two weeks. We know what type of industry we're in, but I don't think anybody wants to see this many people passing away.“

We have four funeral homes here in El Paso, and our refrigeration units are pretty much almost at 50% capacity or a little bit over that. Right now, we're handling over 55 COVID families. So we're seeing an increase, and I just hope during this Thanksgiving that it does not get any worse than what it is now.

It's just overwhelming. We're doing services every day, taking care of these families that lost a loved one unexpectedly due to the COVID, so it's just a harsh, harsh situation. As a funeral industry we've never seen something like this before.“
