The Grim Sleeper. Update: Arrest in the Grim Sleeper Case!

I wish there was a way to get a full and accurate confession out of Lonnie Franklin. Unfortunately, I highly doubt a deal to take the death penalty off the table would be effective. Being 63 and being sentenced in California, even if he does get sentenced to death, he probably knows it's effectively simply a life sentence. Chances of him actually living to an execution date are slim to none.

Oh your more than right. It's not a deterrent when they know it'll be another 30+ years before the execution. There's a way to get an accurate confession, unfortunately he won't be sent to Guantanamo!! Haha Couldn't hurt to ask though. Stranger things have happened. “I just can't believe her life was lost for no reason,” Kennietha Lowe said through tears.

Lowe's remarks came as the penalty phase began in the trial of Lonnie David Franklin Jr., who was convicted last week of murdering nine women and a 15-year-old girl in a series of slayings over more than two decades. Jurors will consider whether to sentence Franklin, 63, to death or to life in prison without parole.

Before the family members of victims testified, Deputy Dist. Atty. Beth Silverman told jurors they would hear evidence in the coming days that proves Franklin killed five more women for which he wasn't charged, using the same modus operandi seen in the 10 killings and one attempted murder he was convicted of.

As the penalty phase of trial for the man convicted of the “Grim Sleeper” murders of nine women and a 15-year-old girl continued Monday, prosecutors worked to build their case tying the defendant to two additional uncharged murders in 1984 and 2000.

Los Angeles police detectives, a forensic lab technician and a fingerprint expert each provided new testimony related to either the January 1984 shooting death of 21-year-old Sharon Dismuke or the shooting of Georgia Mae Thomas, 43, who was found dead Dec. 18, 2000, in an industrial area of South Los Angeles, with two gunshot wounds to the left side of her chest and blunt-force trauma to her head.

As she displayed a series of gruesome crime scene photos, each showing the bloody or battered corpse of a woman slumped over or spread across an autopsy table, the prosecutor made a simple request of jurors deciding the fate of the so-called Grim Sleeper serial killer.

“I ask you to show the defendant the exact same mercy, the exact same compassion, that he showed his victims,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Beth Silverman said. “Because that’s what he deserves.”

The story of one of Los Angeles’ most notorious and prolific serial killers moved into its final stages Thursday morning as closing arguments began in the penalty phase of the trial of Lonnie David Franklin Jr.

Jurors resumed deliberations today on whether to recommend life behind bars or the death penalty for a former city garage attendant and sanitation worker convicted of the “Grim Sleeper” killings of nine women and a teenage girl.

On Friday morning, defense attorney Dale R. Atherton urged the seven-woman, five-man panel to recommend life in prison without the possibility of parole for Lonnie David Franklin Jr., saying a death sentence would delay the healing process for the victims’ families.

“I want you to know if you vote for death, that’s fine ... It’s a fair and just verdict. But my point to you today is that there is a better way,” Atherton told the jury.

In her closing argument Thursday in the trial’s penalty phase, Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman said Franklin “deserves to pay the ultimate penalty” for his crimes.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy turned the case over to the jury shortly after 10:15 a.m. Friday, and the panel went home about 3:30 p.m. The jurors are due to resume deliberations at 9 this morning.

The jury recommended death. The judge has to uphold that for the sentence to be official.

He'll be 100 years old before they execute him. There are inmates on Death Row who have been there for 35 years and they're not even close to an execution date. The system is a bad joke. Most probably he'll die in prison.

I feel bad for the families. The harm that this man caused...

A former Los Angeles garbage collector convicted in the so-called Grim Sleeper slayings that spanned more than two decades was sentenced to death on Wednesday, capping a lengthy case that centered on the gruesome deaths of more than a dozen women in South L.A.

“This is not a sentence of vengeance,” Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy told Lonnie David Franklin Jr. as relatives of his victims looked on, some of them in tears.
