Complete University Letter to students/ faculty and staff

http://www.ucdenver.edu/faculty_staff/alert/Pages/AlertsArchive.aspx

Dear students, faculty and staff,
This has been a difficult and trying week for all of us. Apart from the sadness we all feel for the victims, the aftermath of Friday’s Aurora movie theater shooting, with the suspect a former student at the Anschutz Medical Campus, has generated anxiety and created some interruptions in your lives. Please know that we are doing all we can to support those most directly affected by the shootings, to create opportunities for you to demonstrate support, to ensure your safety on campus and to cooperate with authorities in the ongoing investigation.

Information: The university is honoring the request of the local police to not discuss this matter, to preserve the integrity of the investigation. A gag order issued by the court this week prohibits police and certain other university personnel from commenting on the case. We appreciate your continued cooperation in helping us honor the authorities’ request by not giving media interviews. We urge you to sign up for RAVE, the university’s emergency notification system, so you may receive timely alerts in the event of future emergencies on campus. You can choose to be contacted via text message, email and voicemail, but you must sign up in order to receive the alerts. Also, please know that we will continue to send you communications with regular updates.

Support: Monday’s campus meeting, and our conversations with you, provided an opportunity for us to pull together. We were heartened to witness the desire to help those affected by the tragedy. Today’s gathering at the Anschutz Medical Campus and vigil on the Denver Campus provide a reminder of the healing power of community. These are just the first events on campus; the Anschutz Medical Campus Student Senate will host a Coming Together for the campus on Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 3-6 p.m., including a fundraising component. More details will follow via campus email. Other events being planned include donation collections and blood drives. We will keep you informed about these events as details become available.

Safety: At Monday’s campus meeting, many of you raised concerns about what is being done to ensure your safety on campus. We would like to assure you that Campus Police, with the assistance of local and federal law enforcement, have conducted thorough police sweeps of buildings on the Anschutz Medical Campus using specially-trained dogs, and all the buildings have been deemed safe. Concerns over suspicious packages were also taken very seriously. The authorities investigated and those packages were deemed to be of no threat. In addition, the university is starting an inventory of all campus labs to ensure no substances are missing.

From the initial and ongoing emergency response of our physicians, residents, and other dedicated health professionals to the diligent work of our police department, which has worked tirelessly to ensure a safe campus, and finally to the current outpouring of support for the victims, we are proud of our university’s collective response to this horrifying event. The university stands ready to help you cope as well; please see the attached list of Campus Resources.

Thank you again for your continued cooperation, sympathy and community.

Sincerely,
Don Elliman

Doctoral Program (PhD) in Neuroscience
Program Facts

The University of Colorado PhD in Neuroscience is a program that focuses on studies of how the brain works. Specifically, the emphasis is on processing of information, behavior, learning and memory.
This program is administered through the University of Colorado Denver Graduate School.
Among the 35 graduate students as of Fall 2011, 65 percent are women, 14 percent underrepresented minorities or disabled and 9 percent are students from rural colleges and universities in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Each year an average of six students enters the program.
Completion typically takes five to seven years.
During the first year, students attend classes and initiate research. Then as they continue in the research-based program, the full-time focus shifts to research.
At the end of the first year, students are required to take 'prelim' oral exams. Students who do well on the oral exam continue with the research program. Students who have difficulties with the oral exam discuss with the training committee possible options for moving forward, including retaking the exam.
At the University of Colorado, the NSP is an interdisciplinary PhD degree granting program started in 1986 that has been funded by an NIH training grant since 1993. The program currently had ~60 faculty who come from six basic science and six clinical departments.
