Day 2: Alexis Murphy's blood found on shirt Randy Taylor was wearing, prosecution says

In opening statements made Friday in Nelson County court, investigators say they found the shirt balled up under Taylor’s couch. They also found a fingernail, a diamond stud from an earring, and fake eyelashes in Taylor’s trailer. Murphy’s iPhone was also found near Taylor’s trailer.

Posted: Apr 29, 2014 5:39 PM EDT

When confronted with that information, Taylor apparently told investigators, "You might as well take me in, I'm getting tired."

During a second search of the camper after his arrest, authorities found the shirt Randy Taylor was wearing in the gas station surveillance picture.

They say that shirt was balled up underneath the couch and there were hair extensions and fake eyelashes inside of it and blood on it, they say again

Prosecutors detail evidence on second day of Randy Taylor trial

Friday’s proceedings, which will continue Monday, featured testimony from 18 witnesses, including Laura Murphy, Alexis’ mother, and a cashier at the gas station who said she saw Taylor and Alexis Murphy talking outside the store on Aug. 3.

A surveillance video Martin showed in court displayed the image of Taylor holding open a door at Liberty gas station on Aug. 3 as Murphy walked in. The video did not capture their conversation in the parking lot, which a cashier working that evening testified she observed, but it did show Murphy’s white car following Taylor’s truck north on the highway. Her cellphone, which her mother testified Friday was “her best friend,” stopped being active after 7 p.m. that night, Martin said.

Testimony links Murphy’s DNA to Taylor’s camper
FBI agent: Blood on T-shirt that of missing 17-year-old

Tue May 6, 2014.

He said investigators uncovered evidence of a violent struggle and believe that led to Murphy’s death, though a body has not been recovered.

A cashier has testified she saw the two talking a few minutes before they left; the video captured an image of him holding the door open for her as she entered the store.
On Aug. 4, the day an extensive search for Murphy began, surveillance video at a Charlottesville movie theater recorded her car pulling into a parking spot at 10 p.m., but the driver was not identifiable. About 30 minutes later, Taylor was at a nearby Applebee’s looking “sweaty,” the bartender has testified, adding he asked for a cab ride back to Nelson County.

Jon Cromer, of the Virginia State Police, said the hair “was enough to make a ponytail of” and outside of the scope of the team’s search warrant so the camper was sealed and he left to get another warrant.

Day 4: Pictures found in abandoned house; FBI expert talks about cell phone records

Taylor implied that this was the third person involved in the incident. He was described as a black man with cornrows, and later identified as Dameon Bradley.

Bradley testified Tuesday that used to work at the McDonald's next to the Liberty gas station, but that he wasn't even in Nelson County the day Murphy went missing and that he barely knew her.

A cellular expert from the FBI testified Tuesday as well regarding the cell phone records of both Taylor and Murphy.

The last person to testify Tuesday was an agent with the Virginia State Police.

Jury finds Randy Taylor guilty of Alexis Murphy’s murder
CBS 6 reporter St. George said some jurors cried as the verdict was read around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The jury recommended life sentences on both counts. A judge will formally sentence Taylor at a later date.

After sentencing, the commonwealth’s attorney and Murphy’s family addressed the media outside the courthouse.
“It doesn’t bring us the closure that we need, but it goes a long way in helping us,” Murphy’s family said.

JAIL INTERVIEW
Randy Taylor speaks about Alexis Murphy trial

Convicted murderer Randy Taylor spent his last moments in court bolting for the door.

"I remember when they read the verdict. All I could hear was a humming noise,"

"I remember her mom sitting up there, but I don't remember all of it," Taylor said. "I couldn't focus."

Taylor sprang from his chair to dart out. He doesn't recall crossing the room, only the sheriff's deputies who grabbed him lowering him into a chair outside the courtroom moments later. He said he "meant no disrespect" to the Murphy family
