"More than 60 people showed up Saturday morning at Wildwood Church in Whonnock for a final search for missing Maple Ridge senior Tjeerd ‘Ted’ Vanderveen.

“The amount of community support has been overwhelming,” said Megan Oliver, who started the Facebook page Uncle Ted Search Info Group.

The number of people helping Saturday almost tripled from last week’s organized search, indicating how the word of Vanderveen’s disappearance has taken a long time to spread, she said.

The 72-year-old, who suffers from dementia, went missing on Nov. 28 after he went for a walk in the Ferguson Trails area, near his house in the 26500 block of 112th Avenue. The search by emergency responders lasted two days and involved area search teams, a helicopter and a police dog. Police are now treating it as a missing persons case, and the search has continued by family, friends and volunteers."
"Yellow ribbons were handed out to searchers walking near homes. Home owners are being asked to put up the ribbon on the front of their gates or fence, to indicate that they have checked their property thoroughly. Anyone who is unable to physically check their property is welcome to contact the Facebook group and ask for help."

‘We’re just hunting for closure now’: Maple Ridge family continues search for missing senior

"Vanderveen would walk the trail system multiple times a week, she says, but would always make his way back home — making his disappearance disturbing."

"She’s also asking other neighbours in the area to check around buildings, under tarps and inside makeshift shelters in order to cover more ground. The family is also offering to do the same for less mobile neighbours who can’t check themselves.

Marsden says her father requires dialysis on a daily basis. Missing it for a week would lead his body to shut down, ramping up the ticking clock already put on the search by cold weather.

Vanderveen’s encroaching dementia throughout the past year has only raised the family’s concerns even more."
“He just hasn’t been himself lately, because he’s been watching himself deteriorate,” she said. “It’s hard for anyone, I assume, to watch yourself not be able to do the things you used to do.”

Vanderveen is described as a Caucasian man with a slim build and short grey hair. He was last seen wearing a turquoise coat, jeans, black boots, an orange toque and black gloves. RCMP say he responds to the name Ted."

3 seniors found, 2 still missing in Metro Vancouver amid cold snap

And with temperatures forecast to reach -4 C overnight, the ongoing search efforts are growing increasingly desperate.

Tjeerd "Ted" Vanderveen
In Maple Ridge, a massive search effort resumed Friday for Tjeerd Vanderveen, a 72-year-old man with dementia who disappeared after heading out for a walk on Ferguson Trail the previous morning.

Authorities said Vanderveen was wearing winter clothes, but he was not prepared for a night outdoors in below-zero temperatures.

"We are very concerned," Sgt. Amanda Harnett of Ridge Meadows RCMP told CTV News.

"We have gone over many different parks yesterday and we will going back to those areas today to make sure no stone is left unturned."

Dozens of people, including search and rescue crews and police officers, are working to find the senior, and a helicopter has been deployed to assist their efforts.

While Vanderveen's family said he's familiar with the area, crews said the terrain is a concern.

"There are some steep areas that we are searching," said Rick Laing with Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue. "There are certainly some water courses and those are probably the big hazards we are looking at right now."

Vanderveen is described as white with a slim build and short grey hair. He was wearing a turquoise coat, jeans, black boots, a black toque and black gloves. The RCMP said he responds to the name "Ted."

Ws thread for the other missing senior referenced in the article...
