Family of missing Knoxville woman wants 'more urgency in this case'

July 6, 2021
On Monday evening, dozens of people came together for a prayer vigil at Victor Ashe Park to remember the daughter, niece, cousin and friend they love — and to draw attention to her disappearance.

She was reported missing June 28 from her Wilson Road apartment. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information on her whereabouts.

Police say they're committed to finding Kyle or reaching a resolution in her case.

"Based on the available evidence and the circumstances of her disappearance as investigators understand them, there is very strong reason to believe that Desheena is in danger and has likely been harmed. Due to the ongoing nature of that investigation, we cannot elaborate beyond that," Knoxville Police Department Spokesman Scott Erland said.

...

While Kyle was possibly seen around June 23, her last verified sighting was June 18.

...

"This investigation stems from some of the domestic incidents we were made aware of. We can say that we believe there may be foul play, but we just don't know to what degree," Turner said.

Birthday presents were waiting for Desheena Kyle on June 25, but her family members say they never got the chance to give them to her.

After not hearing a word from the 27-year-old Knoxville woman on her big day, they knew something was wrong. Upon paying her a visit to her apartment in northwest Knoxville, they discovered her car hadn't moved in a week and that she was nowhere to be found.

While Kyle was possibly seen around June 23, her last verified sighting was June 18.

On Kyle's 27th birthday, the family got help with a welfare check after neighbors raised concerns, Rita Faye Turner, Kyle's aunt, told Knox News. What was incredibly worrisome was that her dog was left behind.

"That was her baby. Her dog was like her child," Turner told Knox News. "She would have never left her dog alone like that."

Knoxville Police Department put out a public alert on July 2 stating that investigators have strong reasons to believe Kyle could be in danger.

"This investigation stems from some of the domestic incidents we were made aware of. We can say that we believe there may be foul play, but we just don't know to what degree," Turner said.

Police search home of man who dated missing Knoxville woman, family says

July 7, Update

Police searched the home of a man who had been dating a missing 27-year-old Knoxville woman, the woman's family members said Wednesday.

Police tweeted at about 5:20 p.m. that the person they were looking for was not found in the home. Crisis negotiators were outside the home for about two hours.

Rita Turner, who is the aunt of Desheena Kyle, said police told the family Wednesday that officers planned to execute a search warrant at the home of the man Kyle had been dating off and on.

Later Wednesday afternoon, officers and crisis negotiators converged at a residence in the 2100 block of Ohio Avenue in the Lonsdale neighborhood. Police tweeted they thought the subject of the warrant was inside the home and that the person was "known to be armed."

Desheena Kyle's search: Ex-boyfriend had history of assault | wbir.com

A man arrested Wednesday after police crisis negotiators responded to his home in Northwest Knoxville has previously been charged with assaulting a Knoxville woman now missing nearly a month.

KPD sent in crisis negotiators and several officers to serve the warrant at his home on 2127 Ohio Avenue Wednesday afternoon, but did not find him there. Police found him later that evening and took him into custody.

Court records also show John Bassett was previously charged with domestic assault against a missing woman, Desheena Kyle, in 2014. At the time, the two were in a relationship.

One of Kyle's family members told 10News Bassett had been stalking her before her disappearance.

According to court records, on July 27, 2014 Bassett got into an argument with Kyle at his home on Ohio Avenue.

According to court records from July 2014, Bassett and Kyle got into a physical fight and he hit her at the home that was searched on Wednesday. Bassett reportedly hit her in the side of the head as she tried to leave the home, and when she tried to take off in a car, Bassett allegedly hit the window of her car with a rock and broke it causing her more injury. He was arrested for the incident but charges were later dropped.

Currently John Bassett is in the Knox County Jail. His IDN# is 1142597. He has a Revocation hearing on July 21, 2021 in Division 3 court. I'm guessing that it's Revocation of Probation hearing because John Bassett has an active Tennessee State sentence that doesn't end until 02/26/2029.

In the Tennessee Department of Corrections his number is TDOC ID:00604570.

NEW: Search for missing woman grows more urgent | Hard Knox Wire

July 16
Nearly a month after she vanished, the search for a missing Knoxville woman grew even more urgent Thursday as police issued another public plea for help.

It was clear that authorities are losing hope that 26-year-old Desheena Kyle will be found alive and well.

“Investigators, who have and will continue to pursue all active leads, have strong reason to believe that Desheena could be in danger and has been harmed,” said Knoxville Police Department spokesperson Scott Erland.

While KPD officials have been tight-lipped about the investigation so far, Bassett was taken into custody last week after a very public display of force in the Lonsdale community.
