Identified! TN - Knox Co, 'Shotgun Jane Doe' WhtFem 607UFTN, 21-30, Jun'87 - Tena Marie Gattrell

I am currently looking into Nancy Willis. She is a good fit in the facial bone structure and the broken leg. I'm trying to find out any other injuries she may have had. Also were her ears pierced? Also the fact that most believe she was a murder victim could explain why her local LE are not actively looking at her case as a missing person. And of course the Johnson City connection and I-81 are remarkable.

But understand that Nancy Willis has made the ruled out list. My question is on what basis? If DNA then fine but if on circumstances she does deserve a second look.

Look in the FB group; there should be a note with who was ruled out. I'm pretty sure she's one of the ones we submitted. There will be a note next to her name on how she was ruled out. I'm on my way out or I'd look

Found the list including the updated one submitted by myself. No reasons listed for exclusions. Is there another list?

@C. Walter Brown

I'm not sure if you had seen this case when he was ID'd April 2013.

TN - Knoxville, BlkMale skeletal UP1581, 31-40, Jan'82 - Howard Hardin

If you go to this post, it was from when the Smithsonian originally did Isotopes, they also did new images for SJD and the male Doe. It ended up leading to them ID'ing the male and when they did, they found there was an MP report for him in the same office where he was a UP. Do you think they checked the file cabinet to see if they had an MP report for a woman that could match SJD?

Article link doesn't work
Smithsonian sheds new light on Knox County cold cases - After years of no new information, the Knox County Sheriff's Office has new leads on two cold cases, thanks to the help of the Smithsonian.

In January, the Smithsonian used their new isotopes testing to give investigators a more specific area to search. They've been studying the victims' teeth for more than six weeks....

"The water that you drink, the food that you eat, the air that you breathe help create the enamel in your tooth when you are developing as a child," she said. The test on the enamel narrowed down the area where the two grew up. ..

...In 1982, the man's body was found in a wooded lot near Mascot Road.

...The test results and media exposure have lead to new leads in the unidentified man's case, but due to the investigation details cannot be released.

The article really ripped my heart out. Can't imagine what the family is going thru.

Now that the pieces are coming together... How was there a missing person's report but no one ever checked? Where has it been? They have it now.

Perfect match: Technology, newspaper article, luck solve mystery of remains

Dobbs pulled the missing person report filed on Hardin and confirmed the clothes found with the remains matched those last seen on Hardin by his girlfriend, Linda Gaile Cole.

“Once I had a name, I could start pulling all the pieces together,” Dobbs Sadi.

Dobbs said she has interviewed Cole as part of the now active investigation.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed I just wondered if the two men were charged with her death? I know at least in some states if someone dies during the commision of a crime it can be upped to murder or felony murder. I'm just wondering if the two men benefit legally by making her an accomplice versus a victim or was that not an issue?
Again sorry if this has been discussed.

Wanted to post a few things that I believe had recently come up. I was going back over posts.

The maker of her Synthes plate in her ankle said they didn't keep track of where the plates were distributed once they were made and shipped but they did believe the plate surgery was done in 1985 to 1986 based off of the model that was used.

Her clothes and shoes were quite old and worn which is what the men indicated to LE when interviewed which is why they gave her the jersey. At one time there was a photo of the shoes. They're very worn and dirty. I wish we had a photo of her sleeveless shirt. I assume it was like a tube top

We need it confirmed which wrist her bracelet was on. In the photo I mentioned above, it was from before she was moved when LE got there. In the photo, she was laying on her left side with a silver bracelet on her right wrist. Her right hand was in her pants pocket... This made no sense to us, the bracelet was supposed to be on her left wrist. She was also shot on the left side of her head, how did she drop to her left side? We decided that at some point, someone had processed the photo negative wrong so we need this clarified.

It's been reported that SJD had a hysterectomy which is wrong according to the autopsy the uterus is present and is pale but otherwise within normal limits. Both left and right ovaries are plastered to the pelvis.

Autopsy shows bullet entered her head at about the top of her left ear; in line with her eyebrows which blew the top right side of her skull off. Her right eye was hanging. It notes her eyes were brown. Path of "projectile" is from the left orbital area to the right orbital area in a roughly horizontal plane. The skull plate is extensively fractured into plates of the order of 2.0x3.0 cm

Her drug screen came back negative except for alcohol which showed .13 and that she had what equaled a few beers. No other drugs or meds were in her system

We were trying to figure out when and where pants like hers were worn. One gal from the South said she didn't think they were popular there. Was trying to figure out if they were "parachute" pants or some other fabric.

They won't release the actual 911 call. Homeowner calls 911 and arms themselves at the same time yelling through the door that she is armed, and calling the sheriff, younger guy yells at homeowner "call them, I can't do anything with her" and continues to walk away. All of this is supposedly heard on the 911 recording. Homeowner then says Jane is trying to come thru the door, kicking the door. Homeowner tells Jane; stop or I'll shoot. Jane doesn't stop, homeowner shoots.

I've seen that there's a question about why the two men, Jerry Lynn Brown and John McCarter, were not charged with anything. It appears that they were indicted on multiple counts of felony murder, but the counts were dismissed because, under the controlling law, Jane Doe was considered a co-felon, and thus the men could not be charged with her death.

I've attached the case from the Court of Criminal Appeals. I know it's not much but I found it interesting.

Thank you.

Well it seems to me that yelling "he has a knife!" is a lousy way to trick someone into opening the door at 2:30 in the morning. But if my theory and timeline holds up we may be back to the shirt being a clue. The men say they gave her a shirt. They never said they gave her pants...The shirt just happens to match the pants? Next thing I want to examine is did she really mention a Tina from Indiana as the two men have said? 30 miles to the north the body of Tina Marie Farmer of Indiana was found at roughly the same time. Was a Jane Doe herself until recently. Connection?
Hearing a woman's voice saying they have a gun would make you think you were safe possibly. If you were trying to rob a house using a woman to ask and use the phone might be a thing but you would do it much earlier. Robbing someone who isn't letting you in period and threatens a gun is a reason to go to another house. MOO

The maker of her Synthes plate (I believe) in her ankle said they didn't keep track of where the plates were distributed once they were made and shipped but they did believe the plate was done in 1985 to 1986 based off of the model that was used.

I went through the back door at Synthes (still in business) using a vendor that my office uses that does business with Synthes. He got me in touch with their IT guy who asked for me. They say a more accurate estimate would be 1982 through 1988.

Her shoes are quite old and worn which is what the men indicated to LE when interviewed which is why they gave her the jersey. At one time there was a photo of the shoes. They're very worn and dirty.

I have a photo of the shoes. believe it or not, there are shoe experts out there. One from California I spoke to tells me these are shoes sold by Kmart only. The shoe company is still in business and provided me a model number for the shoe. But remember just because they were sold at Kmart does not mean she didn't get them at a shelter. I would like to know though what states had Kmart stores in the '80s. probably all.

I agree and can not get a straight answer here. I think the photo shows one thing and the NOTES written at autopsy says something else.

It's been reported that SJD had a hysterectomy which is wrong according to the autopsy the uterus is present and is pale but otherwise within normal limits. Both left and right ovaries are plastered to the pelvis.

The ME I took the notes to had never seen the body lets get that out there. But from the report and the notes I gave her she opines this... SJD suffered from a prolonged (at least a year) pelvic inflammatory disease. The scar was likely the result of trauma surgery that possibly could have been related to the other injuries. Pelvic inflammatory disease was most likely related to blunt force trauma not a VD that was suggested in the 80's. No hysterectomy. She most likely had given birth to at least one child. She wanted me to be sure to tell people she had not personally examined the remains.

Autopsy shows bullet entered her head at about the top of her left ear; in line with her eyebrows which blew the top right side of her skull off. Her right eye was hanging. It notes her eyes were brown.

I have read articles that state eye color can change due to head trauma related death. The ME says this is not true.

Path of "projectile" is from the left orbital area to the right orbital area in a roughly horizontal plane. The skull plate is extensively fractured into plates of the order of 2.0x3.0 cm

True

Her drug screen came back negative except for alcohol which showed .13 and that she had what equaled a few beers.

True

We were trying to figure out when and where pants like hers were worn. One gal from the South said she didn't think they were popular there. Was trying to figure out if they were "parachute" pants or fabric.

Being a teen at the time I can tell you those pants were popular. Girls wore them at my high school. The pants were relative to her size, light blue and a silky feeling nylon material with cotton lining. The jersey was an exact match to the pants and while bit large for the girl were women's sized not men's.

Can we get the transcript of the 911 call? They won't release the actual call. Homeowner calls 911 and arms themselves at the same time yelling through the door that she is armed, and calling the sheriff, younger guy yells at homeowner "call them, I can't do anything with her and continues to walk away. All of this is supposedly heard on the 911 recording. Homeowner then says Jane is trying to come thru the door, kicking the door. Homeowner tells Jane; stop or I'll shoot. Jane doesn't stop, homeowner shoots.

Not going to release but I am working on hearing it, not much hope. One thing LE tells me is that the homeowner says Jane beat the door, never said she kicked it.

1. Did the ME find any tan lines like Caledonia Jane Doe - Tammy Jo Alexander had?

Not mentioned in notes

2. Does LE still have the strapless shirt SJD was originally wearing?

No, said to have not been obtained.

3. How close was the homeowner to Jane when she was shot? According to the gal that worked on her skull said she wasn't literally shot point blank, straight on. The entry wound was towards the left side of her head as if she started to turn away from the shotgun.

4 to 6 feet estimate. Six pane window in the wood door only one broken. Leads authorities to believe by scatter pattern gun was within 3 feet of the door when fired.

4. Was SJD by the door or was she by the porch pole support? It was said that SJD had her arms and legs wrapped around the porch pole.

The porch was approx 6 feet from door to steps. Jane was on her side and while she was near the post she was not around it. The only mention of that was by the man. I want to point out, homeowner says SJD was pounding on the door, man says she was holding pole...unless she had 6 foot long arms one of them is fibbing. I trust home owner.

5. Did SJD have any gun powder residue on her?

None mentioned in any report or note

6. What kind of ammunition was in the shotgun?

Never heard but as a shooter, I would say the odds are buckshot.

7. There were little holes in SJD's Dolphins shirt, were these from buckshot?

Nothing noted but the shirt still exists

8. We had asked LE if the men mentioned if she had any specific "accent" and did they think she talked like she was from the South. We never got an answer.

I don't know and the men or their families will not talk.

9. We need it confirmed which wrist her bracelet was on. The bracelet was on her left wrist but we've also heard right.

Notes say left

10. She was shot on the left side of her head. We've seen a picture where she's laying on her left side. How did she end up laying on her left side or was the photo processed wrong?

I don't think it was developed wrong as another unpublished photo shows a ruler reading correctly. I assume the photos to be consecutive and therefore developed at the same time. My theory is that the body had been rolled looking for a weapon.

An interesting thing came up talking to a ME. She was wondering about the hair color. Was it brown or was it dyed brown and assumed brown. There are no notes on tests done to the hair.

The advice she gives me is to not 100% trust hair color on the evidence I currently have. Do not trust isotope testing at the exclusion of all other possibilities. She also believes that with the amount of estimation given the photo reconstruction is probably way off. She suggests it needs to be redone using modern parameters.

Again these are items I have collected and should not be considered as FACT. Just my research, do not exclude anyone based on my conclusions, beliefs or theories.

One thing that puzzles me no end...Why was her hand in her pocket? Are we missing something right in front of our eyes?

Someone asked why they (the men) would lie about the shirt?

Percy would not identify her as the woman with the two men. Did they say they gave her the shirt to protect their girlfriend? Lets say Percy said the woman in the car wore a tube top.

Men: "Yeah well it was worn out so we gave her this shirt!"

Just happened to match the pants she wore that they did not claim to have given her.

Not buying it.

Bracelet is definitely on the right wrist. When I flipped the pic the number 2 was backwards

Thanks for answering. I have to get my grandson from school

Also some have asked about the missing lower tooth. It was not like a tooth was knocked out. The tooth was missing and the next tooth shifted and took it's place. It would be possible to speak to her and not notice.

Did they check for sexual activity. Sometimes rape doesn't look like rape. Is it possible she was given an outfit because her clothes showed signs of distress or would have had semen on them? Percy seemed to have dementia could he have been wrong about when his car was taken?
I remember having a Miami Dolphins jacket in the early 90's. I had never been to florida. I liked the colors and it was trendy to have jackets or clothing that supported a team. No one in my family was from Florida then. I was a kid then but my friends and classmates had similar jackets that didn't support our home teams.

There is nothing in any paperwork I have seen regarding semen. I would think that would be standard practice. The temptation would be to say they did and assume it was negative. But we cant assume anything. She did have abrasions on the back of her legs and one shoulder blade. Said to be recent but not likely from the porch.

Does anybody have an updated ruleouts list? Can't get into my darn Namus account! Also--I saw on Wikipedia (which is tough lol) that isotopics showed she was from the Southeast or New England? Is this true?
