8/13/21 Update: Gray Jr. appeared in a court hearing, in regard to his knowledge of the abuse & death against the two children. After much discussion, it was acknowledged that Jr. did not abuse the children but did neglect the abuse that was ongoing. The judge announced his decision to sever Gray Jr. from the other co-defendants, ray Sr. & Shirley Gray. Gray Jr. will be tried separately. The defense team filed a motion for bond release for Gray Jr. The judge previously denied the request in Nov. 2020. A hearing is set for 9/9/21. A trial date is still being discussed, the judge said an exact date will be set at a later time.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - An East Tennessee couple accused of child abuse, murder abuse of a corpse and fraud appeared in court Friday for a status hearing.

The case centers on Michael Anthony Gray, Michael Anthony Gray Jr., and Shirley Ann Gray. The investigation began when Roane County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call saying someone had dropped off a child who said he didn’t know where his parents were.

Michael Gray Sr. and Shirley Gray both face charges for felony murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect, abuse of a corpse, Tenncare fraud and theft. Michael Gray Jr. is facing charges of felony murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect and abuse of a corpse. The Gray parents have pleaded “not guilty” to their charges.

Gray Jr. is only involved in the case involving Johnathan Dalton Gray, while the two parents are being charged in both the Roane County and Knox County cases.

The two parents are set to appear in court on Sept. 30 at 9:30 a.m.

Since this hearing was for the Knox County - I shall keep the 6/6 date for Roane County.

ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. — A hearing for Michael Gray Sr. and his wife, Shirley Gray, has been postponed to resolve a legal question.....

Michael Gray argued that the trial should be held outside of Roane County because of heavy pre-trial publicity. Because it is a constitutional argument, the state Attorney General’s office has to be involved in it.

Now, the court is waiting for a response from the office on how to proceed. According to court records, Gray is facing 42 counts including felony murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect, aggravated kidnapping, falsification of records, theft, and abuse of a corpse.
