David Cann, 56, has not been seen since 2 July, when he had breakfast at his hotel in Hisaronu and then told the manager he was going for a walk.

Family concerned at man's disappearance in Turkey

His belongings and passport were left in his hotel room and he never turned up for his flight home the next day.

Mr Cann, from Southsea, Hampshire, was on a week's holiday on his own.

His nephew Gavin Thomas said the family had travelled out to Turkey after the hotel, in the Fethiye region, contacted them to say the foreign languages teacher had failed to return.

Mr Thomas said: "Having explored the area a bit ourselves, we are very worried that he might have got into trouble during his walk; perhaps a fall, got lost, a medical emergency.

"There is also the fear that there is the risk of a criminal activity."

He said in the week before Mr Cann's disappearance, another man had reported being approached by three men who tried to force him into a vehicle, but he ran off.

This had happened on the same path Mr Cann was due to walk, Mr Thomas said.

"He was able to give a basic description of these men to us, and we have shared this with the police. We do not know if they are following this up."

Mr Thomas said communicating with the local police, the Jandarma, was "not possible due to the language barrier".

Hampshire Constabulary said it was liaising with the family and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, but had minimal involvement as the investigation was being led by the Turkish authorities.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been contacted for a comment.

Family in 'worst night of lives' over Brit missing in Turkey after another body found

"MISSING: David Cann's nephew Gavin Thomas helping in the search (Pic: PH)
David Cann, 56, from Portsmouth, is missing after a week-long break in the Dalaman area of the country.

He was last seen leaving the Happy Nur Hotel, in Hisaronu, on Tuesday July 2 after telling the manager he planned to go walking.

A holiday rep raised the alarm after David, who teaches English as a foreign language, did not make his flight home and his belongings, including his passport, were found in his hotel room.

His nephew, London Fire Brigade firefighter Gavin Thomas, 35, and his wife Georgina, 32, have flown to Turkey to search for him."
"And they endured a horrible night yesterday when a strangled body, of a similar age to David, was found about a couple of miles from where the search is being conducted.

Georgina, a supply chain director at a food and drinks company, told Daily Star Online: “We worry about there being a criminal aspect to the disappearance."

Mystery of missing Brit teacher who vanished 11 days ago in Turkey while hiking alone to ‘deserted, lifeless ghost town’
"Mr Thomas fears his uncle may have injured himself while out hiking although another holidaymaker told him three men had tried to force him into a car on the same route Mr Cann is thought to have used.

"Mr Thomas told the Mirror: “The initial thought is he may have fallen and he's injured somewhere, unable to raise the alarm, that's our primary thought.

"But obviously you can't rule out something untoward going on. It's a possibility, but we obviously don't want to think like that.

"For whatever reason, he might have gone walking off somewhere and got lost.

“We’re clinging to the thought that Dave is a resourceful man. If anyone can find a way out of a dangerous situation, it’s him.”

MISSING: David Cann has asked for help in finding him.
    Credit: Family of Mr Cann

A ‘sighting’ of him several days later in Crete turned out to be false.

Mr Cann’s family has asked for information about the missing man to be posted as widely as possible so the EWN has decided to follow their wishes.

Nephew Gavin Thomas said to the BBC: “We accept that by sharing David’s profile and image as widely as possible, sightings like this are likely – and we all know that this awareness is needed in order to help find Dave, even if negative results like this seem heart-breaking.”

Mr Cann, from Southsea, Hampshire, was holidaying for a week on his own. He is thought to have gone on a hike to explore a ‘ghost village’ when he disappeared.

The foreign language teacher had his mobile phone with him, a bottle of water, backpack and wallet. Most of his belongings including his passport were left in his room at the Happy Nur hotel. He was due to fly back to the UK on July 3.

Extensive searches have been carried out across a wide area of forest. More than 60 people – including some of Mr Cann’s relatives – along with dogs, drones and mounted officers took part in one search.
