Ex-fiance of Maleah Davis’s Mom Charged With Evidence-Tampering: Reports
[...]

Vence is currently being held in Harris County Jail without bond, reported Click2Houston, citing police.

[...]

According to ABC13, Maleah was last seen alive on April 30 on a surveillance video at her family’s apartment, where Vence was seen bringing her back to the residence. Her mother had also left for a funeral on that day.

Surveillance photos, which were also obtained by the news website and released on May 10, revealed that Vence was seen on May 3 holding a laundry basket with a black garbage bag placed inside—one day before Maleah’s disappearance.

A second photo apparently shows Vence showing up at Sugar Land Methodist Hospital on the evening of May 4 carrying his 1-year-old son, with no Maleah in sight, a source told ABC13.

[...]

The young girl has been missing since May 4 after Vence said that he, Maleah, and his 1-year-old son were accosted by three men who he described as Hispanicon on May 3.

[...]

Police later said that Vence changed his story and was listed a person of interest in the case. They said Vence first told detectives that he walked to the hospital but he later told them that he was dropped off, Fox26 reported. The police are looking at surveillance camera footage in the area.

Meanwhile, Bowens told the news website that after Vence did not turn up at the airport, she asked another family member to pick her up. She also filed a police report on the morning of May 4 after not seeing Vence.

Bowens also made a shocking allegation against Vence earlier, on May 10, revealing that there was surveillance video evidence of Vence emerging from his home with a bottle of Clorox along with a laundry basket with a garbage bag inside, Click2Houston reported. The video was then passed on to the police.

“When he spoke to the mother, he told ABC13 he was cleaning up the apartment, and she didn’t understand why he would be cleaning up the apartment,” community activist Quanell X, speaking on behalf of Bowens, told reporters.

SATURDAY, 4:35 p.m: The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitives Task Force arrested Derion Vence around 2:40 p.m. in Sugar Land on charges of evidence tampering. HPD detectives say in addition to blood evidence linked to Maleah being found at the apartment, Vence was also seen carrying a laundry basket from the apartment.

FRIDAY, 2:15 p.m. Local activist Quanell X made explosive new claims on behalf of Maleah's mother, Brittany Bowens, about Maleah's stepfather, Derion Vence. Quanell said Vence was seen on a neighbor's security camera with bottles of Clorox and a garbage bag before Maleah was reported missing.

Quanell said Bowens previously threatened to break up with Vence because she found explicit pictures he sent to another man.

Man who reported girl missing arrested in her disappearance
He was charged with tampering with evidence. Police spokesman Kese Smith declined to give more detail on the charge.

"His story turned out not to be the case, including the fact that there was that blood evidence in the apartment linked to Maleah," Smith said.

Asked if police believe Vence killed Maleah, Smith said: "At this point in time those are the charges we have filed and I can't say any more than that."

He said authorities have not found the girl and the investigation is continuing.

Judge sets $1 million bond for stepfather charged in Maleah Davis disappearance
In the warrant, which KHOU 11 has not yet obtained, Houston police investigators outlined how Vence was seen on a neighbor's security camera the day before Maleah was reported missing carrying a blue laundry basket and a large trash bag out of their apartment. They said he was also seen carrying cleaning supplies, including bleach.

The day after she was reported missing, detectives went into the apartment and saw drops of blood on the carpet near the bathroom, detectives said in the warrant.

When the car Vence was reportedly driving at the time he claimed he was attacked was found on Friday, a laundry basket was found inside. Police K-9 dogs at the scene reacted to the trunk of the car, indicating that the dogs were responding to the scent of human decomposition.

A court-appointed attorney requested Vence's bond be set at $5,000, however the judge said that due to the nature of the case and a "significant concern that Mr. Vence will not appear in court," she set his bond at $1 million.

Here are new developments we found out in Maleah Davis' case on Monday

Vence was expected in court Monday morning, but his court appearance was reset to July 10. Maleah's mother, Brittany Bowens, did not utter a single word as she walked out of the courtroom alongside community activist Quanell X. She was greeted with cameras, cellphones and a crowd of community members shouting "Justice for Maleah!" as she made her way to the elevator. Quanell X addressed the people, saying the main concern for him and Bowens is answering the question: “Where is Maleah?”

Vence's bond was set at $999,999 when he was arrested Saturday. A judge on Monday reduced his bond to $45,000. Vence is charged with tampering with evidence. As of late Monday afternoon, he remains in jail.

One question many Click2Houston.com followers have is if Bowens could face charges. According to KPRC2 legal analyst Brian Wice, "The critical issue is distinguishing between the mother's moral responsibility as a parent to do the right thing by her child and to give law enforcement everything that she had at her disposable versus her criminal liability. Right now, she is a grieving mom who made a tragic mistake by not doing of what she could do as a mom to this young kid to help law enforcement at a time when law enforcement needed the help. As it turns out right now, her moral responsibility is radically different from her criminal liability, which how I understand it right now is zero."

New photos show last time Maleah Davis seen alive outside family's apartment
[...]

The photos show the last time Maleah was seen alive on April 30, the same day her mother left town for a funeral. Cameras captured Vence bringing her back into their family apartment that morning.

Following that morning, investigators say he was never seen with her.

On May 3, cameras captured Vence leaving the apartment with his 1-year-old son, a laundry basket, and a black trash bag inside.

Houston police added the laundry basket was found along with a gas can in the trunk of the vehicle that Vence reported stolen.

According to police, canine officers who are trained to sniff the scent of a cadaver were brought to the suspect's vehicle and other vehicles in the parking lot. Both dogs reacted to the suspect's trunk, indicating that they sensed human decomposition in the vehicle.

Police also say they observed drops of blood in the hallway leading to the bathroom of Vence's apartment and on various surfaces of the bathroom.

Officials say they then used a chemical agent that was sprayed and reacted to blood in the hallway and bathroom of the apartment. They say the chemical reacted to the presence of blood that could not be seen by the eye.

Police also revealed the same vehicle was seen on surveillance video on May 5 at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, where someone dropped off Vence. It was there that Vence first made the claim that he was attacked and that Maleah may have been kidnapped.

ABC13 obtained a new surveillance image from that night outside the hospital:
