GUILTY TX - Nathan, 35, & Krystal Maddox, 31, shot to death, Tyler County, 18 Jan 2014

Nathan's parents have been granted visitation with Nathan's daughter, who has been in the care of foster parents since her dad and stepmom were killed. Between Nathan and Krystal, they had several kids. It's so sad these kids now have to grow up without their parents.

Last pretrial was scheduled for today, but I haven't been able to find anything on it as of yet. Also tried to find out if Nathan's parents have custody of his daughter, and no info on that either. Will check tomorrow, maybe will have better luck.
Did see where a 🤬🤬🤬 is posted for Krystal's kids, and it must not be getting much publicity. Pitiful! Have an adorable pic of the four.

Informative article. Mr. Foxjohn sounds like the best person to be covering this case and trial. However, family and friends should be able to wear their shirts supporting the couple whose lives came to such a horrific end.

During the opening statements at a capital murder trial in Bryan, state prosecutor Samantha Oglesby said that Kristen Westfall had unrelenting hate toward Nathan and Krystal Maddox.

The statement came inside a Brazos County courtroom, two and a half hours west of where the trial was set to take place. Judge Delinda Gibbs-Walker granted state prosecutor Lisa Tanner’s request to have the Tyler County woman’s trial moved to a neutral site in order to have a fair jury.

(...)

In her opening statements, Samantha Oglesby, a prosecutor for the Texas Attorney General’s Office, told the jury that they would hear evidence that Kristen and her father Paul shot Nathan and Krystal outside the Mount Carmel Baptist Church as Nathan was going to visit his four-year old daughter.

(...)

In their opening statement the defense asked the jury to look at the evidence closely and really listen to the witnesses and think about what they had to gain. The defense argued that a different picture will be painted when they hear the evidence.

Rhonda Humphus began the testimony phase of the trial. Humphus is Krystal Maddox’s mother. Humphus said that Krystal had four children of her own and knew that she and Nathan were trying to establish a relationship with Maddie, Nathan's daughter.

I hope they never get out of jail!

The testimony ended today at 2p. Turned over to jury. From the article I read in the paper, Kristen made a complete idiot out of herself. I am more than just a little certain she will not get out of this.

From October:

Son involved in Tyler County double murder sentenced to 10 years

http://www.kxxv.com/story/33315829/son-involved-in-tyler-county-double-murder-sentenced-to-10-years

Back in May, Cameron Westfall, 20, pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree felony tampering with evidence. As a condition of his plea, he agreed to testify against his sister and parents, who were all charged with capital murder in the case.

Judge Delinda Gibbs-Walker sentenced Cameron Westfall to 10 years in prison with the possibility of parole for the first tampering charge. Gibbs-Walker also sentenced Cameron Westfall to 10 years of probation for the second tampering charge. His probation will start after his parole ends.

Krystal Maddox's mother Rhonda Humphus was in the courtroom and addressed Westfall directly after his sentencing .

"I've been told that you're different than them and I pray that you are different. I pray that you are because the time that you do in prison is nothing compared to what you have to live with. And as the judge said I really hope that you take this second chance." Humphus said.

Paul Westfall is the remaining defendant facing trial.

I have the feeling that after all the baloney Paul has already pulled, he will most likely also make an idiot out of himself. To me, the only word I can think of to describe him is pathetic. The whole family appears to be mean, lying, and totally disfunctional.
Would really like to know if Nathan's family were given custody of their granddaughter.

3 years later, Tyler County murder victim's mother sees end of chapter in sight

https://www.topbuzz.com/@kswo/3-years-later-tyler-county-murder-victims-mother-sees-end-of-chapter-in-sight-AwKANnZthVg

Rhonda Humphus has spent a large amount of time this week looking through old photographs of her daughter Krystal and son-in-law Nathan Maddox. The photographs and memories is all she has left.

"He loved her kids and she loved his daughter," Humphus said. "She loved her enough to die for her. "

In the three years that have followed, Humphus has been through a lot of emotions. Looking back over the last 12 months, Humphus believes the end to a chapter in the story could be coming. It is an end to the chapter that Humphus was not sure would be come. In 2015, Humphus and other family members were upset due to a lack of movement in the case from Tyler County District Attorney Lou Ann Cloy.

"Every piece of information, I've had to call for," Humphus said back in 2015. "I've heard stuff on the street. I would like to get it from the DA first. Hopefully with the attorney general's office that is going to change, and we will get the information before the public does."

That hope became a reality with three of the family members getting convictions and sentences in 2016.

"So much happened in 2016 after feeling like nothing was ever going to happen," Humphus said. "Once the Attorney General got involved it was just bam, bam, bam."

Paul Westfall is still waiting for his trial. A pre-trial date is set for February 9.

"We are being told that there may be a jury trial in June," Humphus said. "There is a next chapter and getting them all in prison will end this chapter of it and after three and a half years at that point I think it is time."

I'm never sure what's ok to post or not from Facebook, but whoever runs this "Justice For Krystal and Nathan" page said that Nathan's mom got custody of her. They posted it in the comments of the post they made on May 21st, 2015, when someone else asked the same question there.

I feel so bad for this little girl. I can't believe these 4 thought they'd get away with that, either.

Glad to hear grandparents have Nathan's daughter. She needs to be with her family.

I'm glad she's with her family, too. I really wanted to think that maybe her mom, Kristen, didn't know much about this before it happened, in hopes that the little girl could eventually see her mother again outside of prison. But after reading the articles that included court testimony, it became clear it was all her idea. A monumentally stupid and selfish one, at that. I mean, these people didn't even try to make it look like it was one shooter or some random event. According to her brother, she and her dad walked to the church from their house and shot them. They also asked at least two people to kill Nathan and Krystal before deciding to do it themselves.

It's really sad that five kids lost parents, and her own daughter lost both of them.

Board denies parole for Tyler County man connected to 2014 double murder

http://www.ktre.com/story/34476651/tdjc-review-board-denies-parole-for-tyler-county-man-connected-to-2014-double-murder

A pardons and parole review board has denied parole to Cameron Paul Westfall, who was sentenced to 10 years in a TDCJ prison on Oct. 4, 2016, for his role in the 2014 ambush-style shooting deaths of a Zavalla couple.

As one of the conditions to Cameron Westfall pleading guilty to two counts of third-degree felony tampering or fabricating physical evidence, he was required to testify against Kristen Westfall, his sister, and his parents.

According to the TDCJ website, the parole review board made its decision based on two factors. One states, “The record indicates that the offender has repeatedly committed criminal episodes that indicate a predisposition to commit criminal acts upon release.” The other reason listed on the website simply states, “Other.”

Lloyd Paul Westfall pleads guilty, receives life in prison, avoids the death penalty

http://www.kjas.com/news/local_news/article_bae2a2f2-3bf8-11e7-89c2-e710c63fd9e1.html

It’s over. Three years and four months after Nathan and Krystal Maddox were shot and killed outside of a church in Colmesneil, the last member of the Westfall family is going to prison for the crime. On Thursday, 59-year-old Lloyd Paul Westfall entered a guilty plea on two charges of first degree murder before District Judge Delinda Gibbs Walker in the Tyler County Courthouse.

Westfall appeared very thin and frail compared to his overweight appearance at the time of the murders. He was in a wheelchair and was pushed into the courtroom by Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford and his deputies.

Westfall, having worked out a plea deal with the Texas Attorney General’s Office, avoids the possibility of the death penalty and will, instead, spend the rest of his life behind bars with no possibility of parole. Westfall also had to agree that he would not file an appeal.

"You got a life sentence today, but so many in this courtroom got a life sentence because of what you did," said Rhonda Humphus, Krystall Maddox's mother, during her victim impact statement.

"I don't have anything to say about mercy," said Kelly Haggard, Nathan Maddox's mother. "That is between you, God, and the devil and I feel like you are already with one of them."

"If I was sitting here with a gun in my hand today, I would not kill you," Humphus said. "That is because I have a light in me that comes from a higher place.

"I pray for your soul," said Jim Maddox, Nathan Maddox's father. "I've learned true forgiveness through this. It didn't come easy. It came at a great price."

The brother, Cameron Westfall, who was sentenced to 10 years, came up for parole in 2018. He was denied parole and recommended that he serve his full sentence. He is expected to be released in 2024.
