TGSO: new information in 31-year-old cold case

    20180611_193527.jpg

With the adwvancement of technology and facial approximations the skull was sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia,” Sgt. Billy Fiveash, Investigator with the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office, said.

That approximation or reconstruction is what they received along with new information.

"They were able to narrow the time frame from 17 to 30 to 17 to 27 years of age,” Sgt. Fiveash said.

The UNT study also revealed that the john doe had spina bifida but it was possible he didn't know. Another defect was confirmed.

"The defect there was a hole in his head. Like a .22 hole in his scull so we thought there was a defect that the original anthropologist missed. It could have been explained that they just had their thumb over the hole because it's not noted anywhere,” Sgt. Fiveash said.

It was that defect the investigators saw in an original crime scene photo that began this whole process. Another key identifying feature that was caught in both the original sketch and the rendering, the placement of the man's ears.

For the sake of bumping the thread...I submitted Michael Jefferson Adams, missing from Abilene in June 1987, as a possible match to Tom Green John Doe. I didn’t think given the close proximity of the two (distance and time) that the connection had been overlooked, but I couldn’t find anywhere that the two were ever compared. They are not a match, obviously, and were apparently compared quite some time ago.

    The search continues!

    Update from DDP:

"DNA Doe Project Case Announcement: Tom Green Co John Doe “White Socks” – San Angelo, Texas (1987)

    Status: In bioinformatics.

Who was Tom Green County John Doe?
On November 15, 1987, in a remote area near the north shore of Twin Buttes Lake southwest of San Angelo, Texas, two boys, who had gone fishing, discovered the skeletal remains of an unidentified male. Lying in a field at the end of a caliche road off FM 2166, the deceased was wearing jeans, undershorts, and white socks (no shoes) when he died. An autopsy revealed the young man was between 17-27 years old, probably White/Caucasian or Hispanic, stood 5’8, and weighed about 160 pounds. Although the cause and manner of death could not be determined at the time, some investigators believe more evidence will indicate homicide since Tom Green County John Doe a.k.a. “White Socks” was found in the middle of mesquite bushes with clean white socks and no shoes.
