Investigators hope science can help identify San Angelo's two 'John Does'

attachment.php

In San Angelo, the two men found here have remained nameless for over two decades, despite the efforts of the CID team.

One of them has been graced with the nickname “White Socks” – because of the pure white socks he was wearing when his body was discovered. The other man is known simply as John Doe 2.
White Socks, or John Doe 1, was found Nov. 15, 1987 within the area of Twin Buttes Lake.

The details of the entirety of his life are summed up by his physical characteristics, clothing and time of death – with the clothing being the only area investigators could define with certainty.

Wearing size 34x30 Levi's blue jeans, jockey shorts and the white socks, he could have been 5’6, or 5’9, or somewhere in between.

Reduced to skeletal remains, an anthropologist determined he was potentially Hispanic, but couldn’t be sure. The “race of the skull appears to be most consistent with Caucasian,” the case summary states.

His weight was 150 to 170 pounds. He was missing two molars, the right upper and lower, but didn’t have significant dental work done otherwise. He had been in the area where he was discovered for five to six months, making his time of death May or June 1987.

The cause of his death has yet to be determined, but Lowe and Fiveash anticipate it will eventually be determined a homicide. Because he was found without shoes, in the middle of mesquite bushes, and his socks were still white, they said it was apparent that he didn’t walk out there, meaning his body was dumped.

At the time of White Sock's death, using or collecting DNA wasn’t common practice, nor was the science well-understood by the general public.
In 2013, while studying crime scene photos from White Socks’ file, Lowe noticed a defect on his skull. The photo was sent to Dr. Harrell Gill-King at the University of Northern Texas Forensic Services Unit, the nationally-recognized specialty lab for missing and unidentified people.

King and the CID team thought the defect could be a clue into what had happened to the man, so the decision to disinter his body from his burial site at Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Grounds was made.

The hope was that the advanced state of science might help give him his proper name but the defect was determined to be of natural causes.
The hard part about working cold cases, Fiveash said, is that “you get a new lead that might be the key to unlock the case, to arrest someone, then it turns out its nothing.”

Having already taken White Socks from his resting site, they decided to deliver him to UNT to see what other measures could be taken to identify him, including finally collecting and logging his DNA into the national NamUs database, used specifically for the missing and unidentified.
UNT was able to more accurately determine his age, which is now believed to be between 17 to 21-years-old.

From UNT, White Socks was delivered to the FBI's headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. In 1994, DPS experts had done a facial reconstruction of White Socks’ skull, producing a sketch of what he might have looked like. Nearly 15 years later, however, science allows a much more accurate facial reconstruction – which Lowe and Fiveash have been waiting to receive back from the FBI since dropping him off in 2013.

They have been told it should be done by June.
With White Sock's reconstruction just weeks away, Lowe and Fiveash are hoping someone, somewhere, will recognize his face. Anyone with information on him, or John Doe 2, are encouraged to call the Tom Green County Sheriff's Department.

TGSO: new information in 31-year-old cold case

20180611_193527.jpg

With the adwvancement of technology and facial approximations the skull was sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia,” Sgt. Billy Fiveash, Investigator with the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office, said.

That approximation or reconstruction is what they received along with new information.

"They were able to narrow the time frame from 17 to 30 to 17 to 27 years of age,” Sgt. Fiveash said.

The UNT study also revealed that the john doe had spina bifida but it was possible he didn't know. Another defect was confirmed.

"The defect there was a hole in his head. Like a .22 hole in his scull so we thought there was a defect that the original anthropologist missed. It could have been explained that they just had their thumb over the hole because it's not noted anywhere,” Sgt. Fiveash said.

It was that defect the investigators saw in an original crime scene photo that began this whole process. Another key identifying feature that was caught in both the original sketch and the rendering, the placement of the man's ears.

For the sake of bumping the thread...I submitted Michael Jefferson Adams, missing from Abilene in June 1987, as a possible match to Tom Green John Doe. I didn’t think given the close proximity of the two (distance and time) that the connection had been overlooked, but I couldn’t find anywhere that the two were ever compared. They are not a match, obviously, and were apparently compared quite some time ago.

The search continues!

Update from DDP:

"DNA Doe Project Case Announcement: Tom Green Co John Doe “White Socks” – San Angelo, Texas (1987)

Status: In bioinformatics.

Who was Tom Green County John Doe?
On November 15, 1987, in a remote area near the north shore of Twin Buttes Lake southwest of San Angelo, Texas, two boys, who had gone fishing, discovered the skeletal remains of an unidentified male. Lying in a field at the end of a caliche road off FM 2166, the deceased was wearing jeans, undershorts, and white socks (no shoes) when he died. An autopsy revealed the young man was between 17-27 years old, probably White/Caucasian or Hispanic, stood 5’8, and weighed about 160 pounds. Although the cause and manner of death could not be determined at the time, some investigators believe more evidence will indicate homicide since Tom Green County John Doe a.k.a. “White Socks” was found in the middle of mesquite bushes with clean white socks and no shoes.

His estimated height is somewhere between 5 feet 6 inches or 5 feet 9 inches, weight was 150-170 pounds and age 17-21 years old. Other identifying features include two missing molars on the right side of his mouth.

Reduced to skeletal remains, an anthropologist determined he was potentially Hispanic or Caucasian.

Since the discovery, the sheriff's office has pursued facial reconstruction and DNA technology in the hopes of finding out "White Sock's" real name. A familial DNA search yielded more about his origins.

The ethnicity breakdown showed his ancestry was mostly Spanish, likely from colonies in Central and South America, according to the release. His DNA also closely matched a Colombian sample, meaning he was likely from that region.

The sheriff's office is planning to continue checking matches on GEDmatch.com and FamilyTreeDNA.com, websites that compile data from users, according to the release.

Maybe but Tom Green Doe has a significant gap in his front teeth.

Both sketches seem to show his ears as lopsided. His left ear (our right) is lower than the right ear. That would be pretty distinctive if we could find a photo.

I'm looking a Mr. Tabares and comapring him to this man known at Rebel Ray. Rebel Ray is currently an active case in the DNA Doe Project and hopefully identified soon. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) DNA Doe Project Rebel Ray John Doe - DNA Doe Project Cases

This man Brian Keith Montel, from Fresno CA. disappeared in 1986 after he told his family he possibly going to Yosemite. He supposedly had mental issues. Brian only had one hand but parts of the unknown man's skeleton were missing. Montel is a common surname in Bogata, Colombia which would be inline with the DNA GEDMatch data. These two look very similar and their stats match up almost perfectly!
