GUILTY TX - Sherin Mathews, 3, Richardson, 7 Oct 2017 #9

I saw that it says a CPS report was released yesterday but the article just covered what it said and there was no actual copy...anyone have it here?

Why did CPS stop investigating Sherin Mathews' parents months before she was killed?

Three-year-old Sherin Mathews landed in the hospital in February 2017 after her mother said the girl had slipped on the playground. Her father blamed the monkey bars.

But when a doctor specializing in child abuse reviewed X-rays, she found the family's explanations inconsistent with the girl's bone fractures, according to court testimony. She called Child Protective Services, which opened an investigation into the Richardson couple that adopted Sherin from India in 2016.

The agency eventually closed the case. Months later, Sherin was dead, her little body dumped in a culvert. Both of her parents have been charged: Wesley Mathews with capital murder and Sini Mathews with child endangerment.

What did CPS do after the doctor called in March 2017, and why did it leave Sherin and her 3-year-old sister in the Mathewses' care?

A document released by the agency this week offers an explanation: While a doctor told CPS that Sherin's shoulders were infected and there were "questionable fractures," other doctors and specialists that had treated Sherin said they had no concerns that she was being abused or neglected by her parents.

Among the medical professionals Sherin was seeing were specialists in speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy, according to the CPS document. The girl, who weighed less than 20 pounds at the time, had developmental delays and speaking disabilities.

"The medical professionals contacted stated that the child was in better health and at a better weight following her adoption," the CPS form states.

(...)

In the days that followed the girl's disappearance, CPS says, it got a report that Sherin had been seen in public during her last year with
various injuries, including a black eye, a broken arm and a broken leg.

I was just thinking of little Sherin this weekend. Thanks for keeping the tread updated.

Poor little angel. This case still makes me so freaking angry and sad.

Is this the first time we are hearing about her being sick beforehand or did I just forget this? Also is the first we are hearing her sister's version of events? And about feeding therapy?

Eta: I just remembered I had to step away from this one so I likely missed some things...

I think we are just hearing this now. Or, you and I are atleast.

ETA for anyone looking for this part of the article: "Sherin's sister, who is the Mathewses' biological daughter, told investigators that Sherin had been sick and throwing up a lot, according to the CPS document. She recalled Sherin sitting on the grass because Wesley Mathews had put her on time-out on the night she went missing."

I just read the document. I am even more angry. Infection in the shoulders? Multiple broken bones. How could they not have removed her?!!

Not that anyone asked, but I have a belief. I am a longtime North Texas resident. I've worked in the area. (Not Richardson, but neighboring cities in the same county.) With my experience at our county advocacy center and working closely with CPS...I can tell you that they are SO lax with special needs cases and cases of international adoption. It's almost as if they understand the abuse happening and in some ways, justify it. They DO NOT seriously peruse special needs cases. It's obvious she was being abused the whole time. The injuries where there. The warning signs. The medical reports. The reporting. The behavior of the parents. (Specifically, the mother.) She was adopted, special needs, and brown. I've seen it so many times. They didn't care to help this child, or they would have. It's sickening.

It’s the first time I’ve heard the sister’s version. To me it sounded like she had been coached.

I think we heard something about the feeding therapy, I only remember that because I have a picky eater. I was told to feed him whatever he liked but to offer him new foods to try.

I don’t remember her being sick beforehand but I could have missed that.

Yeah, I think it was coached. Preschoolers are very apt at telling it like it is (or was.) They don't generally lie and they don't generally add extraneous information. They also aren't generally specific in using adult language. We know it was coached, because his first version of events weren't true. I think there may be some of the little girls truth peppered in there, though. I could believe that she was throwing up, a lot. (But from abuse, not milk.) I think it's interesting that no mention of the mother is made, which shows me who did the coaching.

All JMO.

Another said add-on to an already sad story with two little victims, one dying to save the other. My heart breaks just as it did when Oct 7 2017 rolled around.

So much sadness. I hope the other little one is safe and adored. I have been worried from the beginning that she was placed with the mother's family. I hope for the best for her life. I hope she thrives.

What is the 3 hours thing, Magz?

Not Margarita but I think she meant that the report said that she was awake and knew Sherin was missing for three hours before reporting. I can’t remember if we were told that it was three hours that she was awake or if she woke up and reported her missing. I do remember that some were thinking no way she was asleep that whole time. I also, vaguely, remember something being said about they sat at the table and talked about it before calling to report Sherin missing. Am I remembering that correctly?

Hi totes! Thanks! I had missed that part.

Yes, I think you are. (Well, that's how I remember it too, so, either we're right or we're both crazy ;)

These two really are...ugh... I don't want to speak the words reserved for people of this caliber. I still can't shake the feeling that this would have never happened had she been their biological daughter.

Think sisters account of this was hand fed to her by her parents.

bbm. I agree. It baffles me as to why they adopted her. Did they adopt her just to abuse her? I guess we will never know. :(

It baffles me too, blue :( adoption is not an easy process, why would they go through all of that to just harm that poor sweet girl? My guess is she did not live up to the levels her big sister did.

MY OWN thoughts- she couldnt get pregnant.

They started adoption process...

She got pregnant...

They continued forward w the adoption because they felt it was "right" to do

but never really loved her like bio daughter.
