Is it possible they got to NI and discovered the bodies so were going to try and dump them in Essex, or maybe even back across the Channel?

Even stranger that it went to NI first (and a longer journey from mainland Europe, by sea)

Wonder if some folks were dropped off there before it traveled to britain.

The lorry driver is said to be from NI so I'm wondering if maybe that was an easier (in terms of paperwork) access point for him?

"It is a tragic event"

Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex Roger Hirst has tweeted saying that it is important that the police have “space and time” to conduct their investigations.

He tweeted:

The death of 39 people in a container in Thurrock is a tragic event.

We must think of the victims, their loved ones and families.

It is important that the police have the space and time to conduct a thorough investigation, so that they all can have justice.

Felt a bit sick reading about the August 27th 2015 incident - 71 found dead in the back of a lorry in Austria.

List of migrant vehicle incidents in Europe - Wikipedia

I remember following the court case, the driver could hear the people in the back of the lorry banging on the sides of the lorry as the oxygen ran out, and ignored them :(:(

In both instances, these people will have most likely spent their life savings on an opportunity to escape to what they hoped would be a better life. Breaks my heart.

Oh my god, grim. And he carried on while they decomposed. Got a life sentence by the looks of things?

Bulgaria in contact with UK government

Essex Police said the vehicle had travelled from Bulgaria and entered Wales via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.

A spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs in Bulgaria told the Press Association: "Our embassy in London is in contact with the British authorities to clarify the case involving the 39 people found dead in a truck in Essex.

"The British police have been contacted and a representative of our embassy has also had a meeting at the Foreign Office in London.

"At present, it has not yet been confirmed whether the truck has a Bulgarian registration.

"There is also no indication of the nationality of the human bodies found in the truck.

"British police have warned that the identification of the bodies will take a long time."

I wonder how they knew so soon that one of the 39 was a teenager

I hope everyone involved in this is prosecuted with the highest charges possible and the longest sentences possible.

It's mass murder. Those people didn't deserve to die in this way :(

39 people found dead in truck container in southeast England
"Seamus Leheny, Northern Ireland policy manager for the Freight Transport Association, said the route that had been used was “unorthodox” since it apparently involved travelling to the island of Ireland and then entering Britain via a ferry to a major passenger port in Wales.

He said that choice may have been influenced by increased security and checks in the major English port of Dover and the French port of Calais.

“People have been saying that security and checks have been increased at places like Dover and Calais, so it might be seen as an easier way to get in by going from Cherbourg or Roscoff, over to Rosslare, then up the road to Dublin,” he said."

Lorry journey 'could have taken three to five days'

Richard Burnett, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association, said travelling from Bulgaria to Essex via Cherbourg, Rosslare, Dublin and Holyhead would take "three to five days in total".

Essex Police has said it believes the lorry travelled through Bulgaria and arrived in Wales at Holyhead, on Saturday. The details of the journey have not yet been confirmed.

Lorry container may have been -25C

Road Haulage Association (RHA) chief executive Richard Burnett said the container appeared to be a refrigerated unit.

He described conditions for anyone inside as “absolutely horrendous”.

Temperatures in such units can be as low as -25C if frozen products are being transported, causing humans to “lose their lives pretty quickly”, he said.

The Mirror reports he said: “It’s going to be dark. If the fridge is running it’s going to be incredibly cold.

“The only place to go to the toilet is on board the back of the trailer. You can imagine if they’ve been in there for days then there will be faeces, there will be urine.”
