A red pennywhistle, a paperback book called The Greatest Batman Storiesand one blue shoe with a blue bow. These were just a couple of clues collected at two different scenes in the 1990s - each where a body was recovered, but which has never been identified.

Locate International, a UK registered charity, helps families to solve missing persons cases and unidentified loved ones. They have asked for anyone with information who could help to identify two people whose bodies were found between 20 to 30 years ago. The cases involved two different scenes and are not connected in any way, but neither has ever been identified.

The first case happened on 19 May 1996 known as “Clifton Bridge Suspension Man” when a man’s body was found on the banks of the River Avon after having fallen from the bridge.

''A missing people charity is appealing for help with the case of an unidentified man found dead on the bank of the River Avon 27 years ago. The charity Locate International said the man was believed to have been found after falling from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, but it is possible he had links to Wales.

The body of the man, who the charity is referring to as the Clifton Suspension Bridge man, was discovered on May 19, 1996. But despite the length of time since his death and a considerable amount of public appeals, he has never been named.

Using an old passport picture which the man had in his possession at the time, a new depiction roughly portrays how he might have looked at the time of his death in the hope he can be “reunited with his name”.

It’s a bitter Sunday morning and a man’s body has just been found on the bank of the river Avon. He’s 6ft tall, has blue eyes and short brown hair.

A Eurohike Adventure guide map, a bible and a red penny-whistle are all found beside him. But how he died is a mystery.

Had he fallen from Clifton Suspension Bridge, as some have speculated? Or is there more to this story?

It was 19 May 1996 when the man was found, near the end of one of the coldest Mays on record. It had been four degrees all night, with heavy rain and winds of 50 kilometres per hour. The man, thought to be between 25 and 35, was found wearing a black jacket, blue Lee Rider jeans and brown boots, and carried with him a black sleeping bag.

The night before, the nation had been tucked up indoors, gripped by the Eurovision Song Contest, won by Irish contestant Eimear Quinn, and the Sunday papers were reporting on an imminent IRA ceasefire.

But nearly three decades later, the man, who conveniently carried with him a photo of his younger self, has still not been identified. At the time, the police circulated his photo – but it’s unsure how widely. No productive lines of enquiry ever materialised.

Now, Locate International, a UK charity dedicated to solving missing and unidentified person cases, is launching a new appeal, asking Bristolians to think back to May 1996 and see if they can remember anything that could be helpful for their investigation.

“I think we’re in a good position,” says lead investigator Jess Halsey, who is coordinating a team of six other volunteers from across the country. She is a chartered accountant by day, and alongside a lawyer, student and NHS worker, has been dedicating her spare time to solving this cold case.

“What stands out to me is that he had a photo of himself. You don’t always get that with the unidentified cases,” she says.

As noted in the Wales Online piece, the combination of the red penny whistle and the sign is a strong pointer towards him having been busking, probably quite recently prior to his death - so he may have been a familiar sight to shoppers around Bristol city centre at some point in the preceding weeks/months.

I wonder why it was so important to them to radically change his hair colour to make him a brunette.

It may be that the newer photo depicts more closely what his hair colour looked like at the time of his death. The other photo might show what he looked like from an earlier time, perhaps when the passport picture was taken. People frequently lose the blond from their hair as they get older.
