Sheffield park where murder victim's body was found remains cordoned off - two days later

A Sheffield park where the body of a murder victim was found earlier this week remains cordoned off by police tonight.

A murder investigation was launched after the body of a man was found on Manor Fields Park, off City Road, in the early hours of Thursday, May 12.

The park remains sealed off tonight (Saturday, May 13) as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances around the man’s death.

South Yorkshire Police have repeatedly stated they are yet to formally identify the man after they were called to the scene at 5am on Thursday.

However, several Italian media outlets have named him as Italian national Carlo Giannini. The young Italian national is reportedly from the Mesagne district of the city of Brindisi.

A source told The Star Mr Giannini worked at a pizzeria in Broomhill.


Several outlets report that Mr Giannini’s family are speaking with the Italian consulate to travel to Sheffield to help police with enquiries.

Outlet Today Cronaca reported: “According to what ANSA [Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata, a new agency] learned from Italian investigative sources, Giannini's relatives are in contact with the Italian consulate and it is not excluded that they may travel to Sheffield in the next few hours.

"According to reports from Brindisi, the 34-year-old left Mesagne years ago to move to Northern Europe to work in some restaurants. Two years ago he had opened a pizzeria in Germany.”

Anyone with information, or who may have seen suspicious activity in the park between the evening of Wednesday, May 11 and the morning of Thursday, May 12 is asked to call policeon 101, quoting incident number 122 of May 12.

According to this Italian MSM article, Carlo’s brother and sister-in-law want answers as to what’s happened to him. They went to Sheffield this morning to formally identify him. Omicidio a Sheffield, la cognata del pizzaiolo assassinato: «Vogliamo la verità»

Yet, South Yorkshire Police haven’t named him yet and some Yorkshire media have only done so because he’s been widely named by Italian media Sheffield park murder victim named locally as Italian chef, 34 for the last couple of days.

Bottom line: precious time wasted, as Sheffield residents might hold vital information about what happened if the victim’s identity was revealed imo

It’s all gone quiet since police released cctv from the night of the murder. The local keeps the case in the news, but it is worrying that the killer Is still at large Killer still roaming streets after chef is stabbed to death in Sheffield park

Detectives investigating the death of Carlo Giannini have today (Wednesday 22 June) arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

Mr Giannini was found dead in Manor Fields Park at 5am on Thursday 12 May. A post-mortem later concluded that he died of a stab wound.

This is the third arrest in the inquiry. A 17-year-old boy is released under investigation and an 18-year-old man has been released pending no further action.

Carlo Giannini: Family appeal for information that can help solve murder​

“It might help give Carlo some dignity.”
Today (Saturday 12 November), marks six months since Italian national Carlo Giannini was found dead in Manor Fields Park at 5am on Thursday 12 May.
A post-mortem later concluded that he died of a stab wound.
Six months of investigations, CCTV trawls, witness appeals and evidence gathering are yet to identify what happened that morning, and how he came to receive that stab wound.
It is believed the 34-year-old entered the park at 01.18am that morning, but his movements up until his death are unknown.
And six months on, his family have made a plea from their home in Italy to help find answers after being left with “a piece of them missing”. They have also kindly provided two new images of Carlo to go with their plea. The second shows them enjoying a family meal with a man they say was “full of life”.
They said: “Carlo has a family whose heart has been broken and left with a piece of them missing.
“Carlo was a man full of life and with a lot of passion for his work. He loved his family, he loved life, he loved his friends. He believed and trusted people who showed him love and wanted to change his life with his work.
“Carlo deserves to rest in peace and, along with justice, this is the minimum we can give to him after his life was taken from him. Because no-one has the right to kill.”
Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Becky Hodgman, said: “It’s still absolutely essential we build up a clear picture of the activity in and around the park on the morning of 12 May.
“Somebody out there knows something that will help the Giannini family get some answers. This is your chance to come forward and help them.”
So far, two people have been arrested in connection with Mr Giannini’s death, both on suspicion of murder. A 17-year-old boy will face no further action, and an 18-year-old man remains on bail.
And the Giannini family added: “If anyone saw something on the night between 11 and 12 May 2022 please go to the police.
