A search is under way in Co Donegal as part of the investigation into the disappearance of a 46-year-old woman ten years ago.

The land search and excavation is taking place in Milford and is part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Dr Deirdre O'Flaherty from Co Tyrone, who was reported missing on 11 January 2009.

Dr O'Flaherty, also known by her maiden name of Deirdre Donnelly, disappeared while staying at a holiday home with her family.

Her car was found at Kinnego Beach.

Gardaí say they are liaising closely with the missing woman's family and a Garda family liaison officer has been appointed.

The search is being carried out by members of the Donegal Divisional Search Team and Garda Technical Bureau along with private contractors and is expected to last up to five days.

Gardaí say the search is part of an investigation into the disappearance of a woman on 11 January 2009 at Moville.

In January 2012, three years after she disappeared, the High Court in Belfast ruled it was satisfied that Dr O'Flaherty had died.

The judge used new legislation for the first time - the Presumption of Death Act - in Northern Ireland to declare he was satisfied that Dr O'Flaherty had drowned after going into the sea in Co Donegal.

The court was told she had suffered from depression.

Deirdre O'Flaherty: Search for doctor missing for 10 years

A major search has begun in County Donegal for a doctor who went missing almost 10 years ago.

Deirdre O'Flaherty, a GP based in Strabane in Northern Ireland, has not been seen since 11 January 2009 when her car was found at Kinnego beach.

She had been staying with her husband and children at a holiday home nearby.

Despite an extensive air and sea search, the mother-of-three's body was never found.

"This development continues to form part of a missing person investigation and there is no change of status regarding same," a Garda spokesman said.
