UK - Hunt for terror suspect ex-soldier Daniel Khalife after Wandsworth prison escape, Sept 2023 *Arrested*

Mr Khalife and the lorry left at 7.32am - and he was not declared missing by prison authorities for a further 20 minutes. Another 25 minutes passed before the police were called. They managed to track down the lorry and stop it at 8.37am just over three miles away. By that time, Mr Khalife was long gone - dressed as a chef - and with an hour's head start.

An inmate who worked with escapee Daniel Khalife in the kitchens at HMP Wandsworth has told the BBC that he said "he was going be famous".
....

Asked how easy an escape might have been, Mr Jones said he was "surprised but not surprised".
He explained: "We always used to joke about that lorry; jump in it and drive off, but there was a lot of security staff around the kitchens so it is a surprise he got through there.
....

"One time we were put on lockdown because there was an inmate missing, but it turned out that he had been released the day before but it hadn't been correctly registered.
"So in that sense, I'm not surprised that someone slipped up, or that they didn't have enough people to staff the kitchen, and that he took his chance to unload the truck and vanish underneath the lorry."

Former security and counter-terrorism minister Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones has said escaped prisoner Daniel Abed Khalife "has to be found". Baroness Neville-Jones said there is something "clearly wrong" with the way Daniel Abed Khalife's custody was rated and "you can't take a risk like this".

The manhunt for escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife continues, with all UK police forces and border points on alert for the 21-year-old who escaped from HM Prison Wandsworth on Wednesday. Khalife is charged with terror offences including "collecting information which might be useful to an enemy". It is understood the “enemy” referred to in the charge is Iran. He is also alleged to have left fake bombs at a military base while serving in the Army, and was due to stand trial in November.''

How did Daniel Khalife escape so easily from Wandsworth prison?

The terror suspect hid under a van to make the prison break. Under-resourcing and collusion have been proposed as factors

[…]

A former prison governor, John Podmore, who headed Belmarsh and Brixton prisons, said the escape of Khalife from Wandsworth could “possibly” have been an inside job in a BBC interview. However, there is no firm indication this was the case, although the plan to escape under a delivery van, and the use of strapping, suggest some degree of sophistication and premeditation.

Counter-terrorism police were continuing with a number of strands of inquiry on Thursday, including the possibility of collusion, although there was nothing to suggest that this was a major line of the investigation and search.

Prison break: how Daniel Khalife went from smiling soldier to suspected spy on the run

Police and prison staff have been racing to discover how the former soldier and suspected spy managed to escape HMP Wandsworth and disappear amid the morning rush hour

[…]

The use of strapping to help him hide under the delivery van suggests the escape was probably pre-planned. Police said last night they were keeping “an open mind” as to whether anybody had helped him, warning that anybody who had helped him would have committed serious criminal offences themselves.

However, a day and a half after Khalife’s escape, police have been surprised to report there have been no confirmed sightings of the man on the run. A public appeal was not made until 3.30pm on Wednesday, more than seven hours after he first disappeared, although it did yield a false report on social media suggesting he had been arrested in Banbury, Oxfordshire, prompting a rare denial from the Met.

“This was a really busy area of London,” Murphy said. That the escaped prisoner has yet to be seen, he added was “perhaps a testament to Daniel Khalife’s ingenuity”. Finding him, meanwhile, will be a high-profile test of the police’s effectiveness at a time when questions are being asked about the state of Britain’s prisons.

The van left the Category-B prison at around 7:30 am, taking a right turn out of the gates onto Heathfield Road

Is 65 mins between the prison and the search of the van a correct amount of time for driving/traffic conditions? I wonder if the truck stopped en route? I wonder if sniffer dogs tracked the whole route? Have his (ditched) chef’s trousers been found? He would maybe not look so out of place in white tshirt and boxer shorts given the weather.
Would he have known the area around the prison?

Bidfood are a wholesale food delivery company - they'd be doing multiple stops in the vicinity. I believe they'd do the prison first (ironically for security reasons) then other stops, hence the small distance covered. IMO

I work very close to Richmond Park (Kingston gate) and the police are still out in force this morning. Also worth noting there is a University campus just across the road which has lots of wooded areas. Students are starting to arrive for the new semester and he would blend in very well due to his age.

BREAKING

Police investigating if Khalife had help from prison staff - Rowley

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has said the force is exploring the possibility that Khalife was helped by guards inside the prison to escape.

He tells LBC Khalife's flight was "clearly pre-planned" and is "extremely concerning".

Rowley added a prison escape is "unlikely to be something you do on the spur of the moment".

Asked if police are looking into whether it was an "inside job", the commissioner said: "It is a question. Did anyone inside the prison help him? Other prisoners, guard staff? Was he helped by people outside the walls or was it simply all of his own creation?"

He called it "extremely concerning" that Khalife is "on the loose". Asked whether he was surprised to learn that the terror suspect was in a Category B prison, Sir Mark said it did "seem odd" on first inspection.

The commissioner told LBC the hunt for Khalife is a "massive operation" involving "well into three figures of officers" as well as help from forces around the country and from the border force.

"At the moment we are still really keen to get any reports from members of the public".

I think a vehicle was waiting for him soon after the truck left the prison. It doesn’t seem possible for him to have travelled far under the vehicle - and as there have been no sightings of him or his clothing it does feel like a quick getaway in another vehicle

The park is open as normal today. Keep safe!
