Mr Morgan, 47, is accused of murdering Lisa by putting her into the river in Malton on April 24 this year. The court has so far heard he was the subject of a Domestic Violence Protection Order, made after Lisa had reported two assaults to police three weeks earlier. Prosecutor Craig Hassall KC told jurors in his opening on Monday that the couple had been drinking together on the banks of the river prior to Lisa entering the water. He said she was later found to have sustained bruising to her face, but these injuries were not present when she was captured on CCTV earlier that day.

At around 11.30pm that day, Ms Welford became submerged in the river.
“She appears to have been in the water for about 10 minutes before police arrived, and she was pulled from the river by a police officer and a member of the public,” said Mr Hassall.
A jury has heard of the moment an alleged murder victim was submerged in the River Derwent at Malton.

Police and paramedic evidence read to the jury described how Lisa's heart had stopped and a defibrillator failed to restart it, but an adrenalin shot succeeded.
She was taken to York Hospital and after she was diagnosed with a bleed on the brain to Hull Royal Infirmary.
Morgan was arrested by the riverside on suspicion of breaking a domestic violence protection order banning him from contacting Lisa and taken to York Hospital for a check over.
He told police: “She jumped in the water”, “she was going to kill herself” and that he knew he shouldn’t have been with Lisa but he loved her.
