Courtroom is packed

Members of Logan’s family, counsel, and members of the press are now in court five at Cardiff Crown Court.
The courtroom is packed as we await Angharad Williamson, John Cole, and the youth and Mrs Justice Jefford DBE.

30 June 2022

The mother and stepfather of five-year-old Logan Mwangi, whose battered body was found dumped in a river, are set to find out how long they will spend in jail for murdering him.

John Cole, 40, Angharad Williamson, 31, and a 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, will be sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday after being convicted of Logan’s murder.

Both Williamson and the youth were convicted of a further charge of perverting the course of justice – an offence Cole had admitted before trial.
Mrs Justice Jefford will impose life sentences but has to fix the minimum term of custody each defendant has to serve before they can apply for parole.

John Cole not brought to court

Mrs Justice Jefford has entered the courtroom.
David Elias QC says John Cole has not been brought to court and he is not expected until midday.
The judge said she has been told Cole is expected at 11.45am. She conveys her dissatisfaction with events and has demanded an explanation from prison services.
An application on behalf of the press regarding the reporting restriction on the youth defendant will now be heard in the defendants’ absence.

The Murder of Logan Mwangi

“It is probably one of the most concerning calls that police will ever deal with, missing children. You know instinctively that any one of them could be the occasion where something tragic has happened.” Mark O’Shea, Chief Inspector, South Wales Police

This extraordinary documentary tells the story of the investigation into the murder of 5-year-old Logan Mwangi, whose body was found dumped in a river just yards from his home.

With remarkable access to South Wales Police homicide detectives, the programme captures the arrest and police questioning of Logan’s mother and her partner, alongside the painstaking work to prove who killed him.

The documentary hears from Logan’s biological father, Ben Mwangi, who speaks openly on what it is like to lose his son, as well as his discussions with the police on what happened to Logan. Mr Mwangi last saw his little boy 19 months prior to his death, as he was stopped from seeing him by Logan’s mother, Angharad Williamson.

The documentary shows the chronological order of events, from the 999 call to the final court case. The behind-the-scenes footage follows every step of this harrowing story - one of South Wales Police’s biggest investigations.

The case, led by Chief Inspector Mark O’Shea and Detective Inspector Lianne Rees, shows first-hand the dedication - and the emotion - of those police officers as they try to deliver justice for Logan and his family.

What the hell has happened to Cole now? Not turning up to court. Can he be sentenced in his absence?

He COULD be, if absolutely necessary, but they don’t like to do that. He is coming to court apparently, but not until 11:45am for some reason so they will wait until then for his sentencing

Looks like they are going to wait for him to arrive. It could be a delay with prison transport so nothing to do with JC, but still not good. They have known the sentencing date for weeks, plenty of notice given,to make sure he was there at the right time.

This picture of JC is shocking, I didn’t recognise it as him
Look at the photo of Angharad at the police station. Those eyes haven't cried a single proper tear !

An update on timings

We understand John Cole has now arrived at Cardiff Crown Court where he will be sentenced. The hearing will begin at 11.30am. Mrs Justice Jefford is then expected to hand down her sentences at 2pm. Following that, at 3pm, she will state whether or not she will rule today on an application made by the media to lift the reporting restriction on the youth defendant
