Just caught this one and don't think I'd heard of it. But wow, what a lot going on:

A jealous lover bombarded his ex-girlfriend with death threats - including one warning 'I swear on everything he's a dead man' - before teaming up with his family to murder her new boyfriend, a court heard today. Jay Sewell, 18, was fatally stabbed by a nine-strong group including Daniel 'Joe' Grogan, 20, after Gemma Hodder started seeing the teenager, the Old Bailey heard.

They were 'armed to the teeth' and the weapons they wielded included knives, baseball bats and a four-foot long fireman's axe, the court in London has heard.

[Daniel "Joe" Grogan, 20] with parents Robert, 57, and Ann, 54, siblings Francesca, 29, and Peter, 22, cousin Liam Hickey, 19, a 16-year-old boy who can't be named, Francesca's boyfriend Jamie Bennett, 31 and another man, Charlie Dudley, 25, all deny Mr Sewell's murder.

Between 12.37pm and 8.04pm on December 9, Grogan sent 45 unanswered texts to Ms Hodder's phone...

These included: 'I'll put a bullet straight through his head on my nieces life that's a promise' and 'I'm gonna smash his house up and set it on fire and I'm gonna stab the s*** out him, I promise you on my niece's life'.

Ms Hodder simply responded: 'He's not scared.'

Rossano Scamardella, QC, defending Dudley, asked Ms Hodder: ''Jay's not scared.' Is that what you thought at the time?'

'Yes', replied Ms Hodder, fighting back tears.

What the heck?? I'm struggling to understand how not one of the apparently eight other people involved stopped to think that maybe, just maybe, moving on is the solution to a breakup, not committing murder... o_O Ok, the Mail love to sensationalise, but I doubt they'd make up the quoted texts, plus it didn't sound a whole lot better in the BBC report. Assuming the charges are true, I hope there are some very very long sentences for this one, clearly none of them are safe to be allowed loose in public (if it's true and not seriously exaggerated, at present it sounds so extreme I'm struggling to fully believe it!).

It's pretty much the same in all news reports:( They're all quoting directly from what's being said at the Old Bailey.

I don't know how I missed this one if it was in the media earlier on. Man, that's incredible but you would think that someone with a conscience would have talked the others down, and just move on, it's just a break up, plenty more fish in the sea,

Can't get my head around it. Was Jay goading Grogan for this to happen, do we know?

From the Mail online. Hope it works. Seems Jay hadn't known g/friend very long.

A story from just after the murder: Family’s tribute to stabbed teen as killings hits near-decade high

And the court proceedings report:

A teenager was stabbed to death after 'mugging off' his new girlfriend's ex by calling him a princess, the Old Bailey has heard.

Ms Hodder had driven over to Grogan's house with Jay and some friends. They had planned to sort out the rising tension between the pair.

"It was just going to be me talking to Joe [Daniel]. Unless he calmed down and then Jay and Joe could speak," she said.

She pulled up at Alwold Crescent with Jay and friends, Michael Cook, Charlie Pamphlett and Shane Ray-Walker in her Hyundai Hatchback.

Jurors were told that - unbeknownst to the group - Daniel and his family were lying in wait with a terrifying array of weapons.

Shortly after Ms Hodder's group arrived, the wider Grogan clan piled over the railway footbridge to Alwold Cresent from their house on Sidthorpe Road.

The court heard that Daniel's father Robert carried an axe while his mother Ann held something concealed in a red and white checked tea towel.

Ms Hodder managed to make it back to her car with Michael, Charlie, Shane and Jay but before they could escape the group descended on her vehicle, shattering her rear window and smashing her windscreen.

"I heard Jay shouting “I am being stabbed!” and I turned to the side and he had his body twisted, kicking at the window, trying to get away.”

Pics of several of the accused in the latest Mail article: Mother accused of taking part in 'love triangle' murder of teenage | Daily Mail Online

Really, what possessed these grown adults???

It's fahmily, innit?

I feel like we've seen a few versions of this case here -- someone perceived to be treated grievously badly/unfairly by her/his family members, who then back her/him up by attacking the injuring party en masse. Who knows what Joe Grogan told his family and friends about the victim to get them onside? He was clearly violent and controlling and convincing enough that they were willing to help him "sort things out" in what amounts to a violent gang attack, with fatal consequences.

I feel for family of Jay. I suspect he had no idea what he had gotten into.

What sort of family (parents) back their children up by going out and murdering a young lad. 18 years old and his life snuffed out.

Edited to change age.

Oh I agree -- it's horrific, not endorsing their choices or actions at all. Just noting that we've seen quite a few versions of this story before, from the Wagners in OH through many other cases where families or family members have enabled or actively involved themselves in serious crimes on behalf of one of their own.

The Wagners take the biscuit. Cant wait for trials to get started.

I must have missed the verdicts on Friday. I'm at a bit of a loss to understand some of these verdicts:

  • Daniel Grogan, 21 - guilty of murder
  • Robert Grogan, 54 - not guilty of murder, guilty of manslaughter and violent disorder
  • Ann Grogan, 54 - not guilty of murder, guilty of manslaughter and violent disorder
  • Francesca Grogan, 30 - not guilty of murder and manslaughter, guilty of violent disorder
  • Charlie Dudley, 25 - not guilty of murder, guilty of manslaughter
  • Liam Hickey, 18 - not guilty of murder and manslaughter, guilty of violent disorder
  • Jamie Bennett, 31 - not guilty of murder and manslaughter, guilty of violent disorder
  • Unnamed, 17 - not guilty of murder and manslaughter, guilty of violent disorder
Man guilty of murdering teenage love rival
