Woman followed into basement and raped in Whitechapel

Police have launched a manhunt after a woman was followed into a basement in east London and raped.
The Met released an image of a suspect on Tuesday, following the attack in Whitechapel on November 9.
The 22-year-old was approached by a man in Hanbury Street at about 2.10am, police said.

Scotland Yard said the suspect followed her into a building before raping her in the basement of the address. He left about 20 minutes later.

Police said the suspect is described as a black man aged between 25 and 35 years.
He wore a dark coloured body warmer, which he left behind at the scene of the attack, along with a grey hat. He was then pictured in a grey jumper after the attack.

Poor girl, how horrible. Hope he is caught very soon.

Is not Whitechapel a bit rough area? Also not too many men wear hats that often in London. I really hope we have update with him being caught very soon.

Hoping Twitter will be flooded with this photo too.

He looks like he's already balding, so probably needs a hat or cap in winter.

They should release photos of the clothing he left behind, maybe someone recognises them. Although he should be identifiable from the cctv image as well.

Hopefully they can extract a good DNA profile from the clothing.

Whitechapel isn't that bad. There been a huge amount of regeneration in recent years. It's very close to Shoreditch, well known these days for trendy types.

Footage released in renewed Whitechapel rape appeal

Detectives investigating the rape of a young woman in Whitechapel have issued moving footage of their main suspect in a fresh plea to the public for help in tracking him down.

DCI Neil Rawlinson from CASO said: “This was a horrific attack carried out by a violent predator on a young woman going about her lawful business in what is one of London’s most popular areas for late night socialising. It was a brutal assault that has left her very traumatised indeed.

“I am asking the public to look carefully at the CCTV images we have put out as well as the photo of his body-warmer, which has a distinctive collar and lining, to see if they know who this man is or recognise this article of clothing. We urgently need to trace him and apprehend him in order to protect potential future victims.

“If you have any piece of information at all, however small, please contact us as it could prove vital to our investigation moving forward. All calls will be treated in the strictest of confidence.”

ETA: Odd that he left the body warmer and cap behind and then walks through the streets for 17 minutes before hailing a cab. He doesn't seem to be worried to be caught or captured on camera.

DCI Neil Rawlinson told LBC's reporter Rachael Venables that the suspect pictured in CCTV continues to "pose a risk to others".

"I'm concerned as the Christmas period starts to get underway that there could be other people out in the streets late at night that could be vulnerable."

My heart goes out to the young woman and her family, the headlines do not always tell the whole story about how the rape might affect her now and in the future.
She will be worried about hiv, stds and pregnancy, she may get a urinary tract infection, or hepatitis , she may also require stitches and antibiotics.
Mentally and emotionally, she will likely need therapy, possibly anti-depressants and time off work and/ or school. Her self confidence will be compromised at the very time in her life that she needs it.
The rape might affect her present relationships and those in the future and possibly even cause her to become fearful of men, particularly those that resemble her attacker.
She may have trouble sleeping and eating and become vulnerable to illness.
Everyone around her will be affected by what has happened and might be filled with a combination of fear, sadness and impotent rage.
Get the SOB before he causes more damage to another innocent victim.
    imo, speculation.

Rape suspect wanted over attack on woman, 22, in east London is caught on CCTV | Daily Mail Online
"As part of the new appeal, the investigation team from the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command produced a map that uses CCTV to plot the route the suspect walked for about 40 minutes after the offence.

The suspect is first seen on camera around 2.10am at the junction of Commercial Street junction and White's Row, outside Eyediology opticians

He apparently targeted his young victim at 2.15am and left the building around 2.35am

After this he is next spotted on CCTV walking through Spital Square before crossing Bishopsgate.

He walks into Primsore Street at the end of which he takes a right turn into Apollo Street.

As part of the new appeal, the investigation team from the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command produced a map that uses CCTV to plot the route the suspect walked for about 40 minutes after the rape

Next he enters Curtain Road and walks to the end, before taking a right onto Great Eastern Street where cameras capture him at around 2.50am walking towards Shoreditch High Street.

The last sighting before the man disappears out of camera range is around 2.52am, when further footage police have shows him from behind, putting his arm up to hail a cab as he is crossing Shoreditch High Street near Goose Island."

I'm surprised nobody has recognized him yet as the pictures show his face quite well. Or maybe people did recognize him but didn't call it in.

They describe him as a light skinned black man. When looking at his photos and the video I think he could also be Indian or Pakistani. Body warmers are very commonly worn in these countries.

If you mean drank, than yes. He is definitely stumbling from one side to another when walking. He is quite a tall and big guy.

Attack happened on Nov 9, which was Thursday night, Friday morning hours. He is wearing white office shirt. Not many would wear that on night out to clubs etc. My assumption is he works somewhere in the vicinity and was probaby drinking with some people after work. I would check instagram and FB photos from Nov 8 office or venue gatherings nearby...

Great analysis! I agree it does look like an office attire, black pants and white shirt.

Small correction, the attack happened Friday Nov 9 in the early morning hours, so venues on Thu Nov 8 could possibly be of interest.

Surely appealing to taxi drivers who probably may remember being hailed from that location may identify his address.

A MARRIED businessman faces life in jail after being exposed as a violent rapist.

Jonathan Graden, 29, preyed on two women seven years apart.

In November he followed a 22-year-old into a building in Whitechapel, East London, at 2am and raped her in a basement.

Graden, who runs his own business, was caught on CCTV leaving the scene and later handed himself in to cops after the image was published.

A body warmer and hat he left behind contained DNA linking him to an unsolved 2011 rape in Leytonstone.

In that case a woman, 24, was targeted on her way home from a night out with pals.

Graden, of Belvedere, Kent, pleaded guilty in January to the Whitechapel rape and was remanded in custody.

At London’s Snaresbrook crown court he admitted the 2011 attack.

(some parts bolded by me for relevance)

The disgusting rapist who attacked lone women on London's streets

A rapist who violently attacked and raped two women as they walked alone on London's streets has been jailed.
    ---
Jonathan Graden, 30, of Hackney carried out an attack in 2018 and was then linked by DNA to a previous sex attack in 2011.
    ---
Extensive CCTV enquiries were carried out by detectives, and officers established that Graden took a cab to Belvedere in South-East London.

Detectives released CCTV images of Graden as part of a media appeal and officers dropped hundreds of leaflets in the area where the cab headed. Graden handed himself in to police on December 21.
    ---
On February 5, 2011, a 24-year-old woman was walking along Dyers Hall Road, Leytonstone when she was approached from behind and pushed to the ground by Graden, who went on to rape her in a violent assault.
    ---
Graden pleaded guilty to both offences and on Friday (November 29) was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of ten years behind bars.

The disgusting rapist who attacked lone women on London's streets

To add: So he is originally from Hackney, East London. Glad to see life imprisonment however hopefully minimum term of ten years will not mean that he will be out in five by another system mistake.
