The body of a newborn baby has been found at a recycling centre in Needham Market in Suffolk.

The girl was discovered by staff at Sackers' yard at around 3pm on Thursday, 14 May, and is believed to have been less than 24 hours old.

The firm have confirmed the baby was found among waste which had arrived at the plant.

A cordon is in place at the site on Ipswich Road and police are now urging the mother to get in touch.

Speaking on Thursday evening, Detective Chief Superintendent Eamonn Bridger said: "We understand that this would have been a very distressing experience for the mother of this baby.

"Our current priority is to ensure she receives the care and assistance she requires and we would urge that she contacts us so we can help."

The waste site was closed on Friday while investigations continued, although police were still attempting to trace the mother.

Giving an update on the investigation, Detective Chief Superintendent Bridger confirmed a post-mortem would be carried out to establish whether the baby had died before being transported to the recycling centre.

He added: "Obviously it is a busy site so there’s lots of material moving through it on a daily basis.

"We are confident we will work out where things have come from but it’s early stages.

"We do believe however, that it’s highly likely to have come from the Ipswich area or the immediate surrounding areas of Ipswich."

Sackers believe the body was found soon after it arrived at the site.

A company statement said: "First and foremost we want to send our condolences out everyone involved in this tragic situation.

"Our recycling sorting facilities are so thorough that we believe the baby was found very quickly once it was at our Needham Market site.

"Our main priority now is to support our staff members who were involved in this incident and assist the police with their investigation. Therefore, the site will be closed tomorrow and until further notice."

"I am making a direct appeal to this baby’s mother.

"There is no doubt that she may be frightened but it is very important that we reach her or we speak to someone who might know her.

"We believe the baby was born very recently so the mother may require medical assistance and we would urge her to speak to a healthcare professional or to attend a hospital.
"

– DETECTIVE CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT EAMONN BRIDGER, SUFFOLK POLICE

Police want anyone who has any information that may assist the investigation to speak to them as soon as possible.

Anyone who believes they have information should contact Suffolk police on 101.

The final resting place of an unidentified baby who was found dead in a recycling yard after being dumped in a bin has been marked with a teddy bear-shaped gravestone.

The girl, named only as Baby S, was less than a day old when her body was discovered on May 14, 2020, at the Sackers waste depot in Needham Market, Suffolk.

Baby S was buried in a tiny white coffin on February 17 this year at a simple funeral ceremony, largely arranged by Sackers, in the Millennium Cemetery in Ipswich.

Sackers supplied the headstone after soil around the grave was allowed to settle.

The stone reads: 'Baby S sleeps here. So small, so sweet, so soon, sleep little one, sleep.'

The funeral was attended by 15 mourners including police, council officials and staff from Sackers.

Some wiped away tears as her coffin was carried to her grave with a single white rose on top in the children's section of the cemetery.

'After months of letting her burial ground settle, her teddy bear headstone has now been placed so she never gets forgotten.' A spokesperson for the firm added: 'It was never in doubt that Baby S' short life had to be marked and remembered, and it was never in question that it was our responsibility to ensure that happened. 'We wanted to make sure those who wanted to pay their respects were able to as her very sad story affected so many.'

What a lovely memorial.

It's nice, I think, to see a Doe child's stone that isn't specifically Christian, as a lot are, but also isn't just 'unknown'.

It's beautiful and personal while still acknowledging that we're still waiting to discover this child's identity.

(I have no problem with folks being Christian, but it's a bit odd, I think, if the subject is unknown and isn't found wearing, say, a crucifix or a WWJD band to have a stone that is markedly religious.)
