She was wearing a full body ankle length gillet - i didnt know that, but it kind of all makes sense now!

She was wearing something akin to a sleeping bag and im sure anyone thats tried to sit or stand in a sleeping bag will know that tripping over is likely and if you go over you arent going to be able to bend your legs to save yourself (just topple over like a pencil) Add to that, it would have bubbled up and consumed her when she hit the water, then eventually... weighed her down.

A dark insulated gillet covering her whole body makes sense why its difficult to find her.

The most tragic of accidents. Thoughts and prayers to the family
Oh poor NB. That garment would have made escaping the water virtually impossible. And as you rightly point out - it will make it so, so hard to spot her if she is now completely submerged.

This is so tragic, but that vivid image of her struggling, wearing that impossible item, is heartbreaking.

Nobody saw her? Nobody heard her? Where is she? The river doesn’t look fast flowing. Searches were underway say 3 hours after. How far could she have got? Or did she fall in elsewhere other than by the bench? Was Willow distracted by something so didn’t see her fall in the water? Was she conscious when she fell in?

Unconscious and fast sinking maybe why willow didn’t get in the water because she didn’t realise where NB got to.

I’m going with medical episode. Therefore, no screams or attempts made to get out. And it must have happened very fast that by the time Willow came back to the bench, NB was nowhere to be seen. So Willow didn’t go in the water and wondered where NB got to so looked worried.

Only sense I can make of it. Just thinking out aloud.

The reference to the exit not covered by CCTV was it Garstang Rd via Allotment Lane or via or the exit at the other end of the walk (rowanwater)? I can see why they might be asking for info if it’s the allotment lane end.

There looks to be vehicle access from Allotment Lane to a small building next to the weir. The lane has 2 gates. Are they locked or is anyone able to open them? These can be seen on the drone footage.

If the police are mistaken and she’s not in the water, is it possible that she went over the stile by the bench into the next field and either went into the water or was put into a vehicle there? That field is separated from the other path by a hedge so less people around to see. It would make sense with the dog staying in the area around the bench/gate.

Just my thoughts based on the photos and drone footage I’ve seen.
Garstang, other exits were locked or covered by CCTV

We wanted to give you an update on the search for Nicola Bulley and to give you some more detail on what we have been doing to try and find her.

It’s now a week since the mum of two went missing and since last Friday we have been carrying out extensive searches in the area along with many other enquiries in the background.

This work has included
• Extensive and thorough searches of the river and footpaths by specialist police search teams and partner agencies including HM Coastguard, mountain rescue and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. Resources have included specialist search dogs, drone, police helicopter and divers. These searches are continuing.
• A team of detectives working behind the scenes analysing telephony, house to house, CCTV, dashcam and carrying out other digital enquiries and examining information coming into the inquiry
• Several public appeals for information and to trace witnesses. Key witnesses have all now been traced. We are grateful to the media for all their coverage and to the community for their help, information and support.

Based on all the work we have done so far, we are now as confident as we can be that Nicola has not left the field where she was last seen and our working hypothesis is that she has fallen into the river for some reason. There is no evidence whatsoever that there is anything suspicious about her disappearance or any third-party involvement in her going missing. Our investigation remains open and we will of course act on any new information which comes to light.

Nicola’s family are being supported by specially trained officers and we are keeping them fully updated.

Nicola, 45, was last seen on Friday morning (January 27th) at around 9.20am on the footpath by the river off Garstang Road.

Nicola is white, 5ft 3ins tall, with light brown shoulder-length hair. She speaks with an Essex accent. She was last seen wearing a long, ankle length black quilted gilet. She had a black Vector coat underneath which had long sleeves and came to her waist. She was wearing tight black jeans and had long green walking socks tucked into her jeans. She was wearing ankle length green wellington boots from Next.

Her hair was tied into a ponytail. She was wearing a necklace and pale blue fitbit.

Supt Sally Riley said: “It’s now a week since Nicola went missing and her disappearance has understandably caused a huge amount of concern and upset in the local community, as well as being an absolutely awful time for her family. As a mum I can’t begin to imagine the suffering they are going through. We are supporting them as best we can and keeping them updated on our efforts to try and find Nicola.

“We have done a huge amount of work both in terms of searches of the area as well as extensive enquiries which have been going on behind the scenes and based on that work we are as sure as we can be that Nicola has not left the area where she was last seen and that very sadly for some reason she has fallen into the water.

“There is absolutely nothing to suggest from all the extensive enquiries we have made that anything untoward has happened to her or that there is any third-party involvement in her disappearance.

“This remains a missing person enquiry and we will continue to carry out searches and to do everything we can to find Nicola and provide her family and the community with the answers they desperately need.

“Officers will be in and around the village and anyone with information or concerns should feel free to approach us.”

We can now confirm the following timings from the morning Nicola was last seen:
8.43am – Nicola walked along the path by the River Wyre, having dropped her children off at school
8:50am (approximately) - A dog-walker – somebody who knows Nicola – saw her walking around the lower field with her dog. Their two dogs interacted briefly before the witness left the field via the river path
8.53am – She sent an email to her boss
9.01am – She logged into a Teams call
9.10am (approximately) – A witness – somebody who knows Nicola – saw her on the upper field walking her dog, Willow. Work is ongoing today to establish exactly what time this was.
9.30am – The Teams call ended but Nicola stayed logged on
9.35am (approximately) – Nicola’s mobile phone and Willow were found at a bench by the river by another dog-walker.

Anybody who has seen Nicola, or has information about where she might be, is asked to call 101, quoting log 565 of January 30th. For immediate sightings please call 999.

Well the police have a lot more info than us and I respect their opinion that she didn’t leave the riverside. As a river and spaniel walker I really would be surprised that she went close and fell in accidentally. I wonder if the theory of her being banged on the head and pushed in has been discounted. Whilst it doesn’t bear thinking about it can still be a possibility unless cctv discounts another person. The body will tell all

Can anyone confirm if the cctv on the exits cover people on foot and/or vehicles?

For example, what if someone was concealed in a vehicle? Has this possibility been completely ruled out now? (Apart from the exit with no cctv).

Also, has it been mentioned if the camping pods etc have been thoroughly searched? Or would the cctv show if she had gone that way?

if all the above is confirmed, eg cctv shows no people leaving on foot, and no suspicious vehicles left the exits, then I can see why the police are leaning towards the river.

Does it completely rule out 3rd party involvement though?

Still surprised no one saw her floating or saw anything in river downstream. Walking, I instinctively look at rivers as it’s quite mesmerising.
I feel extremely sorry for the first witness that found her phone. I bet they must feel absolutely terrible knowing just how close they were to her (assuming NB did enter the water). It's phenomenal how many lives this will change for ever.

I think the probability of an accident, particularly with a lively dog like a spaniel is much higher than the likelihood of someone banging her on the head and pushing her in the river.

It’s odd isn’t it when you become so immersed in a case (and you don’t know the person)

I work for a cold case Charity (missing people unidentified bodies)
If this isn’t resolved, as some just aren’t, I’ll certainly remember NB. if bodies turn up in future with similarities in the area or sea etc.. it happens.

they just said other exits covered. They are open to any information relating to a different hypothesis but asked people not to speculate as its unhelpful and v upsetting for Nicola's family

that sounds like an amazing organisation, thanks for sharing. Good to know there's people looking out for found missing people

Do we think we can assume that the gilet described is the one in this photo? Maybe I'm being pedantic, but it's not ankle length, it is knee length. Either way, it's not ideal for swimming in, but it would be great if the reporting/descriptions were more accurate. Also, why don't they release a picture of the specific clothing (if they know)?

That's the thing, will the river give up it's potential secret ,:(

So at the start of this it actually says NB was last seen at 9.20am on the footpath by the river off Garstang road? BBM. Is that an error?

Agreed. Only possible explanation, imo apart from 3rd party involvement and police seem so sure no other involvement so…
