A mother and her two young children are being treated in hospital after a man threw a suspected corrosive substance at them in south London.

The Metropolitan Police said emergency services were called to Lessar Avenue, near Clapham Common, at 19:30 GMT.

Nine people were injured, including officers and others who came to help the mother and children.

Police are searching for the suspect and are using a helicopter in their operation.
Photos from the scene show an abandoned silver hatchback abandoned with its doors open on the Lessar Avenue.

Det Supt Alexander Castle said: "While tests are ongoing to determine what the substance is, at this stage we believe it to be a corrosive substance."

London Assembly Member Marina Ahmad said on social media there had been a traffic collision on Lessar Avenue "with a man assaulting occupants in a car".

No arrest has been made and police said they would give an update on the conditions of those injured as soon as possible.

A local politician said the woman and children were in a car when they were assaulted.

Marina Ahmad, Labour’s London Assembly member for Lambeth and Southwark, posted on X: “There has been a traffic collision with a man assaulting occupants in a car and throwing acid. Victims include children.”

Firefighters used specialist equipment to detect what is believed to be the corrosive substance used in the initial attack, a London fire brigade spokesperson said.

They added: “Firefighters were called to a chemical incident on Lessar Avenue in Clapham this evening.

“Working alongside emergency service partners, crews provided immediate emergency care to a woman and two children.

“We treated nine people, five of whom were taken to a major trauma centre. Three patients were taken to a local hospital and the other was discharged at the scene.”

A further six people – three members of the public and three police officers – were injured after coming to their aid. Five of those involved were taken to hospital.

A couple who live on Lessar Avenue said they ran into the street after hearing a cry for help and then the sound of a car crashing.

"We came outside and saw this guy and he took a girl out of the car and he slammed her to the ground twice," a man, who did not want to give his name, said.

"I chased him half way down the road, but I was in slippers so didn't get very far.

"As I came back, that's when I saw the woman who had been attacked ... so I ran inside to get some water and just sprayed her down with water.

"It was quite horrific."

A witness who said he had tried to clean the chemical from the woman's face told Sky News: 'It was horrific. First a man grabbed his kid - a girl aged two or three from a white car. He threw her onto the floor - twice! It was the worst thing I've ever seen.

BBM. This may be misreporting by the DM/Sky, given the BBC upthread says “a kid”, or it may be the woman was able to identify their attacker to the people who came to her aid.

I wonder if this is linked. This case appeared to be a random attack.
