UK - Peter Wrighton, 83, stabbed to death, East Harling, Norfolk, 5 Aug 2017 *Arrest*

yesterday:

The jury were read extracts from medical notes made by the team who had examined Palmer in the months before the killing.
One note read:"He said he is thinking of 'going for' dog walkers. He said he hates dog walkers. He said this was because they were constantly muttering things about him under his breath, e.g. 'weak and ugly'.

yesterday:

He said Palmer was referred by a GP to a specialist in January 2017 following concerns around a “relapse” of psychosis.
The medical note said: “Past three months, increasing auditory hallucinations, mainly commentary, however command hallucinations to harm others becoming more frequent.”
The note added Palmer had recently bought a hunting knife and machete.

..

Mr Spence also read out extracts from undated notes written by Palmer.
In the note, Palmer said lying was “second nature to him”.

.. “They laugh, joke and swear over the hilarity of their own lives and I cannot help but venture back, in my mind, to the one perfect moment that has defined my entire existence.

“In fact, with this one simple act I have opened the eyes of every single remaining member of that family and hopefully reached, at least, the ears of most of the UK.
“MURDER! Murder they called it, as they wrote up my ascendance to greatness.
“My gift to you. They weren’t even there to witness my art in all its glory, only its aftermath. I wonder what people will say for years to come. How did he? Why did he?
“It brings me solace to know that all my hard work shall finally go noticed by the educated class.
“It shall be studied, revised and hopefully re-enacted in the many centuries to come.
“But none shall leave an imprint as great as mine.”

today: (see full article for details of weapons he keeps)

The interviewing officers read out text messages to Palmer send between his girlfriend and himself on August 5.

One officer said during the interview there had been a gap in communication between the pair from 9am to 11.33am, which Palmer said was due to a lack of signal.

Palmer said he was no longer involved with mental health services and that he had been discharged a “couple of months” prior. However, he was still taking medication.
The interviewing officer asked whether his hallucination, called “Alex”, was with him on August 5. Palmer said he was, but he did not remember talking to him.

Police also asked Palmer about the significance of his Ford Fiesta’s number plate, which read L666 AHP.
He said it was personalised and had been purchased by his mother because he was a “little devil”.

Alexander Palmer, 23, of Freesia Way, Cringleford, who served with the British Army between 2010 and 2015, was charged with murder and appeared at Norwich Crown Court this morning (Tuesday, September 12).

It was supposed to be a plea and trial preparation hearing but defence barrister Paul Raudnitz lodged an application to adjourn the hearing until November 17.
He said there was a “psychiatric” element to this case and an issue over fitness to plead. They were seeking a report which would take a few weeks.

Now this post from September is making more sense.

There should be a verdict by Wednesday I would think. I don't know if he'll end up in a prison or a psychiatric ward. Today's report and ...

Defence barrister David Spens QC also told judge Mr Justice Goose that Palmer has decided not to stand in the witness box.Closing speeches from both the prosecution and defence are likely to take place tomorrow (Tuesday, February 27).

Maybe Little Alex is left handed?

Defence closing speech:

Mr Spens said during police interviews Palmer was “forced” or “persuaded” into accepting he might have been on the west side of The Street - where Mr Wrighton had been killed - although in actual fact he had not been.
He said if Palmer was the killer it would have been “deadly” for anyone to make such an admission.
He said at the heart of the case was pathological evidence in the case pointing to the killer being left-handed when his client was right-handed.
Quoting the pathologist’s evidence, Mr Spens said: “The probability is that Mr Wrighton was attacked from behind with a sharp knife held in the attacker’s left hand.”
But the jury was told by the defence that Mr Palmer was right handed and if the pathologist was right, Mr Spens said Palmer could not have been the killer.

[h=2]A jury has taken just 49 minutes to convict a former soldier of murdering an 83-year-old dog walker in woodland.[/h]
The jury of eight women and four men were sent out at just after 10.30am today and returned its unanimous guilty verdict at 11.30am.
Palmer, who was dressed in a dark suit shook his head as the verdict was announced.
The judge, The Honourable Mr Justice Goose, adjourned the case until tomorrow but said life imprisonment was the sentence, by law, he must pass with the only issue the minimum term.
Palmer mouthed “I love you” to his family in the public gallery as he was led away.

In mitigation, David Spens QC said Palmer was clearly “suffering a mental disorder at the time”
“There is plenty of evidence he was psychotic,” he told the court.
“There is a history of it. He is in Rampton [secure hospital] at the moment prescribed anti psychotic medication. His full diagnosis is yet to be undertaken.
“At the time of the killing he was not taking anti psychotic medication. The side effects were deeply unpleasant and persistent.
“But for the assault on him by a fellow trainee commando back in March 2013, which would appear to have precipitated the onset of his mental disorder, you may think this offence might not have been contemplated.

Jailing Palmer for life, The Honourable Mr Justice Goose called him a “highly dangerous man”.
“You had stopped taking your medication, knowing that it caused an increase in your hallucinations,” he said.
“You planned this murder having bought the knife and travelled to the scene to pick on a member of the public who was walking his dogs.
“You had thought where to go, how you would carry it out and how you would leave the scene, disposing of the evidence to connect you with the attack.
“This was a callous and planned killing.”

I see no excuse for his not guilty plea.
