William 'Bill' Taylor disappeared on June 3, just days after telling police his Land Rover had been burnt-out in an arson attack.

And yesterday officers with wooden sticks could be seen carrying out searches of the land owned by the 70-year-old in Gosmore, North Hertfordshire.

Commenting on whether the pensioner's bank account had been touched since his disappearance, the detective added: "We have to very much keep an open mind, we don't know how people go about with their daily business in terms of finances.

"It could have been that Bill had a large quantity of money with him that is absolutely feasible.

His son Richard Taylor said: "If anyone out there knows anything about my dad's whereabouts please contact the police.

"This is an unbearable situation and I am worried sick about him. My family is in turmoil and we are desperate to get him home."

William is white, around 5ft 11in tall, of medium build with short grey hair.

I saw reports about this when he first disappeared, then nothing more and assumed he had turned up.
Very worrying.
I note that the Chief Inspector in charge ( atm ) is Ms Wheatley - she who initially handled Helen Bailey's case.

eta : gave her the wrong title she is a DCI not a Super

Yes I remember the interview she gave where she couldn't say what she was thinking, and what we were all thinking.

So that arson attack (according to your link Alyce) was reported on Saturday May 26th. I would say there is a connection in terms of it being a weekend.

It's quite alarming in that it could have been a precursor of foul play. I wonder if there were any disputes that anyone knows of.

Actually May 26th was a Sunday, so either the paper has it wrong and it was Saturday 25th or it was Sunday 26th. Two Sundays in a row.

ETA Ignore me it was a Saturday. I was looking at the calendar wrong.

From 21st June:

His granddaughter Rachel Taylor, 19, released pictures of his burnt-out Land Rover Defender TD5 90 as she appealed for help finding him.

His family said they were ‘worried sick’ by his disappearance, adding he was not ‘vulnerable’ or suffering from dementia.

Mr Taylor, who was made a widow after his wife Grace died in 2016, was missing for his birthday on June 11.

A report from June 25th:

North Herts’ chief inspector said today the search had taken officers as far away as Lilley.

Appealing to the public in front of William’s home at Harkness Hall, south of Hitchin, Ch Insp Julie Wheatley said he was being treated as a “high-risk missing person”.

Specialist officers had led a thorough search of the fields and woods around the secluded home William shares with a friend, Ch Insp Wheatley said.

She added that it didn’t appear anything was missing from the house.

One of the articles above said WT was last seen by his Grandson so I assume the friend he lived with must have been away from home

I wondered if he might have walked to the pub that Sunday evening but the closest one I can find is the Orange Tree a mile and a half away.

Police began searching a 1.7km radius of his home at Harkness Hall on Thursday morning, and over the weekend were joined by more than 100 specialist volunteers – who had come from as far away as Dorset.

..She also said at that time that police had looked at William’s mobile phone records and bank accounts as part of their investigation, but could not yet give further details.
