On the day she beat her grandson into a coma, a Fort Duchesne woman began the morning by taping the 4-year-old's eyes and mouth shut with clear surgical tape and made him stand in the corner, prosecutors allege.
They say the punishment of Jose Rodriguez went on for hours. The boy's 8-year-old half-sister told investigators that she saw the tape on the boy when she left for school and wondered why it was still there when she returned home in the afternoon.
And when grandmother Charlissa Sireech began hitting and punching Jose, the girl said, she went into her bedroom because she was scared and didn't want to watch what was happening. The day, Aug. 30, 2004, ended at a hospital with Jose in a coma and his 3-year-old brother, Emilio, suffering from a severe head injury.
