GUILTY UT - Top FLDS leaders arrested in Utah food-stamp fraud, Feb 2016

They really ARE a sick bunch of perverts. I don't think there is anything they could do that would surprise me. I've read several books written by former FLDS women & a common problem seemed to be jealously among the wives for their husband's attention. Maybe they switched to 'seed bearers' to try & prevent jealously among the wives. If they're not allowed to have sex with their husbands what is there to be jealous about?

Ok, so THIS phrase caught my attention:

And I kinda thought, "sexual relations between spouses without Warren Jeffs' permission" is prohibited?? AND new marriages? What's up with that?

This kind of group usually wants a woman to voluntarily and intentionally produce as many children as there are non-pregnant menstrual cycles, from as early age as possible-- why would new marriages, and sexual relations between spouses be constrained in this cult, which only grows by adding newborns?

Is the communal money too short for large families? Preparing to uproot and colonize a new location? Preparation for "let's all drink cyanide Kool-Aid and head for heaven because we are so persecuted" apocalypse?

But no! Here is the answer-- testified to in court Sept 2015, by the ex-wife of Lyle Jeffs, Charlene Jeffs, who managed to escape the cult, and get custody of her teenage kids. Sickening. Really. There is no end to the sadism of this cult, IMO.

Instantly reminded me of Offred in "The Handmaid's Tale" dystopian novel. Yikes!! Control of women thru sexual subservience to any assigned man, forced reproduction, and shuffling of kids to prevent strong ties between a woman and her bio kids. Omg-- every new detail that comes out about this cult is more and more horrific, IMO.

Yep, welcome to the FLDS fold. I have read I think pretty much all the books around about them and holy schnitzel. They are sick. Slowly crumbling, but still pretty sick. I was really sad when the FBI had to return all those children to live a life of lies and indoctrination. Of child rape and forced marriages.

Four FLDS members still sought; three released conditionally

A seventh person who was indicted in a food stamp fraud scheme in the polygamous community on the Utah-Arizona border has surrendered, leaving four who are still at large.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah says Nephi Steed Allred was booked Thursday into a jail in St. George, Utah. Prosecutors say Allred is an accountant who helped sect leader Warren Jeffs move around the group's money.

Warrants are out for the remaining four. They are followers of Jeffs, but not high-ranking leaders.

A Thursday email from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah said that three of the people arrested this week were expected to be released from Washington County, Utah, Jail as early as Thursday night on the condition that they wear GPS ankle-monitoring devices. The U.S. Attorney did not oppose their release, the email said.

Lyle Jeffs, John Wayman Plead Not Guilty, Will Remain In Custody

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leaders Lyle Steed Jeffs and John Clifton Wayman, arrested on fraud and money laundering charges, both appeared in Utah Federal Court Wednesday morning.

Both men will remain in the custody of the U.S. marshals.

Four others also arrested Tuesday appeared in federal court Wednesday morning.

Yep, these men are the scum of the earth. They embezzle the government they say they hate and not obey, they treat women and children as objects, and have no shame about it.

And not just ripping off the government, but doing it with money for the poor and less well off! Jesus would be pretty pissed off....

Just getting those kids into a regular public school system would be a huge step forward. As it is, the sect controls all info and access to learning. Even folks who leave have an incredibly difficult adjustment.

South Dakota Sect Leader Seth Jeffs to Be Jailed Until Trial

A U.S. magistrate judge ordered the alleged South Dakota leader of Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect to remain behind bars because there is a serious risk he would flee before a trial over what prosecutors say was a multi-million-dollar food stamp fraud scheme and money laundering.

Jeffs, 42, had a detention hearing Monday, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann ordered him held in custody because she determined he is a serious flight risk. U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch in Utah said Jeffs, who is being transported to Utah, could appeal the decision to the trial judge.

A trial date has not been set.

Judge: FLDS leader Seth Jeffs a flight risk, orders him kept in jail

After a hearing that lasted less than an hour, Wollman said that prosecutors presented "clear and convincing evidence" that Jeffs was a flight risk, and ordered him to remain detained. It is still unknown when he will be transferred to Utah.

ST. GEORGE – A tenth member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints entered a plea of not guilty in federal court in St. George Monday on the heels of a federal indictment alleging he was part of a multimillion-dollar food stamp fraud and money laundering scheme.

In a separate hearing Monday, a federal judge denied pretrial release for South Dakota FLDS leader Seth Jeffs.

Wearing shackles and an orange-striped jail uniform, Rulon Mormon Barlow, 45, arrived in court Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert T. Braithwaite, after turning himself in to law enforcement Saturday afternoon.

Rulon Barlow was found to be indigent by the court and was appointed a public defender. He will be represented by Joel Kittrell.

Rulon Barlow is the tenth of 11 members of the FLDS polygamous sect, which has historically claimed the twin cities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, as home base, to be charged in a two-count indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court, District of Utah, Tuesday.

Terms and stipulations for Rulon Barlow’s early pretrial release were negotiated and agreed upon by both sides prior to his initial appearance. Braithwraite signed the agreement, stating Rulon Barlow would be released from custody once he was taken back to Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility for processing following Monday’s hearing.

As this report is published, an eleventh FLDS member named in the indictment, Kimball Dee Barlow, 51, of Hildale, is still at large.

A status hearing for Rulon Barlow and nine other defendants indicted in the case has been rescheduled from March 21 to March 22 at 1 p.m. in St. George’s federal court.

Food Stamp Program to Continue in Short Creek

Despite last week’s successful raid in Colorado City, Arizona that left 11 FLDS church leaders indicted on fraud and money laundering, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP benefits will not be suspended in the area.

According to a press release by the Department of Economic Security, the nearly 4,000 Arizonans in the Colorado City area, who depend on the food stamp program for their daily existence, will continue to receive their benefits.

Final SNAP fraud suspect surrenders

The final suspect among 11 polygamist church members charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States government of food welfare funds surrendered to law enforcement Tuesday.

Kimball Dee Barlow, 51, of Hildale, was booked at Purgatory Correctional Facility around 9:30 a.m. on conspiracy charges in relation to the U.S.

The indictment alleges that the defendants defrauded the SNAP program by drawing in hundreds of members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as part of a fraud totaling more than $12 million.

Kimball Barlow is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court Wednesday.

**Wow-- the karma of being "booked into Purgatory"! Love the name of that jail!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatory_Correctional_Facility

The Purgatory jail made headlines in 2006 when it was the scene of incarceration for Warren Jeffs, following his flight from justice.[13] He stayed there for twelve months before trial and conviction for two first degree felony counts of rape,[14] at which time he was transferred to Utah State Prison.

Food Stamp Trial May Be Turning Point for Polygamist Sect

The arrests are only part of the legal troubles confronting the sect and its home-base communities, accused in a federal civil rights trial in Phoenix of denying housing, utilities and adequate policing to nonbelievers. In closing arguments on Wednesday, the defense argued that the government was using the towns as scapegoats to seek revenge against a religion it abhors.

In interviews, lawyers, defectors and scholars who have researched the fundamentalist church said the crackdown was happening now because the allegations of criminal behavior became too widespread to ignore — and because enough people who left the church agreed to testify for the government.

I have seen some "reality" shows focusing on people escaping from these particular sects. While there is something of a rescue network formed by others who have previously escaped, it would appear as though the barriers are quite high. Not only does this require walking away from one's entire life and family, but women particularly are disadvantaged in the world of work owing to poor education. Males fare somewhat better based on early training in forms of manual labor. Some of the folks featured on these shows spoke to the central distribution of food and goods--used as a means of control, access to food being a reward for favorable behavior.

What struck me the most, however, was the internal conflict that many faced between their desire to be free from oppression--in the form of arranged marriages, control of the food supply, etc--and their own internalized religious belief system. I recall one poignant scene in which some rescued girls went through the refrigerator in the safe house throwing out "forbidden" food items, such as milk products. These things had been forbidden by Warren Jeffs, from prison. And while they wished to be free from the limited options of remaining with the sect, they lacked any objective means by which to evaluate the belief system, which frankly had taught them to believe that any rejection would doom them to hell. They were terrified of trusting even the people who had participated in helping them to escape, and were buying for them the food that they were throwing away because it was forbidden by Jeffs.

This is a cult and the members are every bit as indoctrinated and "brainwashed" as are the members of any other cult. It can take a long time even after they are free of the cult to overcome the programming of a lifetime. But it can be done.

I hope these vile criminals (and that's what they are) end up getting lengthy prison sentences.

I watched a PBS special last evening about Al Capone's conviction for income tax evasion. He expected to get a year or two but got sentenced to 11 years. Interestingly, he was released a few years early due to having deteriorated to the mental capacity of a 12-year-old as a result of his longstanding untreated syphilis.

Authorities say polygamous sect leader Lyle Jeffs has fled Salt Lake City, where he was supposed to be on home confinement pending trial on charges in a multimillion-dollar food stamp fraud scheme.

A U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman says a warrant was issued Monday for Jeffs after he took off over the weekend. No details were available about how he got loose.
http://lasvegassun.com/news/2016/jun/20/polygamous-leader-lyle-jeffs-flees-home-confinemen/

Looks like the prosecutors were right when they argued that Jeffs was a flight risk.

The FBI would not divulge details of Jeffs' escape, but it is believed he cut his GPS monitoring device and fled the home he was staying at.

"I'm not here to say 'I told you so,' but I did," Thomas Jeffs, one of Lyle Jeffs' sons, said in an interview with FOX 13. "It was inevitable."

Thomas Jeffs, who left the church two-and-a-half years ago, said his father will be constantly on the move and assisted by FLDS faithful, and communicate with burner phones. Thomas Jeffs told FOX 13 he helped his father stay hidden from federal authorities when Warren Jeffs was a fugitive from the FBI.

But the young man said he would no longer be helping his father and asked FOX 13 to deliver a message to Lyle Jeffs.

"I know you're watching. Do it for your family, turn yourself in. Stop running. It's stupid. It's not worth it. I mean, you've made the stupidest decision in your life before now," Thomas Jeffs said. "And it's only going to come worse on your family. You think you're going to run, they'll catch you just like they did Warren."
http://fox13now.com/2016/06/20/flds-leader-lyle-jeffs-has-escaped-custody/

"Blame the judge for this," said Wallace Jeffs, one of Lyle's half brothers. "Everybody knew that he was going to do this. Everybody."

But Matthew Jeffs, a 23-year-old son of the fugitive, believes his father will be captured, just as Warren Jeffs was. Running will prove to be a big mistake that will earn Lyle more incarceration, the son said.

"It's a matter of time," Matthew Jeffs said. "He's not going to be able to run forever."

But this time, a Jeffs family member is running with a considerable infrastructure already in place to pursue him. There is a federal and local law enforcement task force in southern Utah and northern Arizona that focuses on the FLDS. There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of former Jeffs followers whom investigators can draw on to help find Lyle.

A warrant was issued Monday morning for the arrest of Lyle Steed Jeffs, 56. Jeffs, a leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS Church) was on pre-trial release awaiting his upcoming federal trial.

The FBI is the lead agency in this fugitive investigation and will, with the assistance of law enforcement partners, vigorously pursue all leads for Jeffs’ apprehension.

Anyone with information on Jeffs’ whereabouts should call the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office at (801) 579-1400 or your local FBI office.

Thomas said he heard from his mother (now divorced from Lyle Jeffs) that police were keeping tabs on his father at a house in the Salt Lake area. They checked on him over the weekend. On Monday morning they checked on him again and he was gone.

The bracelet (ankle monitor) was sitting on the table," said Thomas who escaped the FLDS polygamist community of Short Creek over two years ago.

Thomas Jeffs feels confident his father has altered his appearance, likely wearing short-sleeved shirts and shorts to blend in. He thinks he's far from Utah - perhaps headed for his ranch in Mexico - evading police by using "burner" phones. He's sure he had help to get away.

He thinks Lyle escaped at the suggestion of his older brother Warren who still communicates via phone with the FLDS community.
