The article also tells us that social services were involved before the shooting, since the time that the child stole and crashed DT’s car.

Great. Move on. Is living with a great grandfather the best plan for this kid? Two generations removed? I have grandchildren, that I see briefly, and that is more than enough for me. Maybe this is some stability and a better environment. But, what is the plan when Great grandad can't take care of a child? There is no mention of age here...let's guess, even on the young side, at least 75...

“He was a victim before that date,” Taylor said. “Because contrary to popular belief, I know they said that my granddaughter neglected him and placed him in precarious situations. But there were instances where she tried to get help. I drove her to certain places. My other daughters drove her to places to acquire help, even the safety plan that they put in place after the car incident. There was no follow-up.”
Great-grandfather rebuilding life of boy who shot his teacher

While I can sympathize with this grandfather being in this position of raising his troubled grandson, I have to wonder if perhaps mother was the one who failed to follow up. Family and friends can lead the horse to water (or drive it there as the case may be) but cannot make it drink. Just having sought services a few times doesn't mean she actually availed herself of those services or did was was needed to continue receiving them. It sounds to me as if grandfather is still minimizing the mother's role in this case. JMO

A new article from the Washington Post with additional disturbing details— the principal and vice principal locked themselves in their offices initially. Office staff kept banging on their doors and eventually they came out and helped give aid to Ms. Zwerner— her lips and nail beds were blue by that point. More below (sadly it does have a paywall)

“In recent days, with the first anniversary of the shooting approaching, a group of parents, a former school employee and the grandmother who was on the scene told their stories publicly for the first time. They described the race to save Zwerner, the chaotic aftermath of the shooting and its lingering effects on the young students who witnessed it. Seven families filed lawsuits Thursday accusing school administrators of negligence and raising fresh questions about how they handled the incident.”

“She said Richneck Principal Briana Foster Newton and Assistant Principal Ebony Parker locked themselves in their offices with some children and staffers shortly after word arrived about the shooting. Sample-Rusk said she, Olavarria, another staffer and a young child remained in the main office.
The child was hysterical, Sample-Rusk recalled, so she banged on the principal’s door to try to get the boy inside — but she got no response. Sample-Rusk said she sent the boy to find a hiding place, and he crouched behind a copier.”
“After Zwerner arrived in the office and collapsed, Sample-Rusk said, she banged on the principal’s door again. This time, she said, Newton peeked out, then shut and relocked the door. Newton’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment on this account. Sample-Rusk is among those who have sued the school district and Richneck administrators.”

Red bolded : Hmmm. Wonder whose kids they were ??
Also, wouldn't the children have been in classes already ?
Why were they with the principal ?

Black bolded : What a disgusting response. Shameful.

Exactly !
And, 'coddling' the boy does not mean he is getting the professional help he needs.

He is young enough to care for him. Age 62.

Great plan. Not. This kid is not going to be at the top of any list for adoption. When Great grandad goes, where is this child going to end up? Foster care? Probably juvenile hall or some sort of therapeutic mental health school. The only place for him when he ages out? Back with his mother.

I have seen it happen many times. No one else is going to want an 18 year old male, and most are not ready to take care of themselves. Unless he is in prison by then.

Too bad judges don't see the reality. Sure, she is a "bad mother". But, does that mean that "no contact" is a good plan? After all, we as a society have determined that prison is supposed to be an opportunity for rehabilitation and change, otherwise, why do we let people out?

So why not actively pursue some sort of structured rehabilitation plan for this family?
I always thought prison was for punishment?

at 63, I wouldn't want complete responsibility for a 6 year old.

Especially imho a very troubled 6 year old.

Will CPS & the child's school & therapy be exceedingly careful this time?

jmho ymmv lrr

Therapy. This kid has so much to unpack, where would you even start? He has zero empathy. Can empathy even be "taught"? This doesn't seem like a child who is going to benefit from 45 minutes a day of group and 30 minutes of individual.

The real problem here, is his age. He is doing things we used to see in teens. Now, it is not unusual to have a six year old, who is this troubled. Well, at least intervention starts earlier.

Can’t say much about this specific case as my lips are sealed.

But yes kids can be taught empathy and lives can be different once the surroundings are changed. The issue is all the therapy in the world can help a kid but if the surrounding hasn’t changed that’s where it becomes harder to teach empathy but not impossible.

Former assistant principal charged with child neglect in case of 6-year-old boy who shot teacher

A special grand jury found that Ebony Parker showed a reckless disregard for the lives of Richneck Elementary School students on Jan. 6, 2023, according to indictments unsealed Tuesday in Newport News Circuit Court.

In the lawsuit, Zwerner's lawyers describe a series of warnings that school employees gave administrators in the hours before the shooting, beginning with Zwerner, who went to Parker’s office and told her the boy “was in a violent mood,” had threatened to beat up a kindergartener and stared down a security officer in the lunchroom. The lawsuit alleges that Parker “had no response, refusing even to look up at (Zwerner) when she expressed her concerns.”

The lawsuit also alleges that a reading specialist told Parker that the boy had told students he had a gun. Parker responded that his “pockets were too small to hold a handgun and did nothing,” the lawsuit states.

Zwerner's attorneys, Diane Toscano, Kevin Biniazan, and Jeffrey Breit, issued a joint statement following the special grand jury indictments:
"These charges are very serious and underscore the failure of the school district to act to prevent the tragic shooting of Abby Zwerner. The school board continues to deny their responsibility to Abby, and this indictment is just another brick in the wall of mounting failures and gross negligence in their case."

School Board appeal denied.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Former Richneck Elementary School teacher Abby Zwerner's $40 million lawsuit can move forward as scheduled after the Virginia Court of Appeals declined to hear an appeal in the case.
On Friday, the Virginia Court of Appeals declined to hear the Newport News School Board’s appeal that could have stopped the lawsuit from going to trial.

This just makes my day !!!

I have good friends that relocated to Newport News several years ago. As much as I dislike this area, I believe I'm going to go visit so I can attend the trial.

Glad I ran across the article. I recommend the Ethan Crumbley Michigan school shooter thread.
Parents held accountable for a school shooting. Just sentenced today....10 to 15 years.
