Father of Murdered Charlottesville Protester Opposes Death Penalty

December 13, 2018

"Mark Heyer, whose daughter, Heather Heyer (pictured), was killed in 2017 while protesting a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, says he does not want federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty against the man who killed his daughter....

Mark Heyer told BuzzFeed News, “I don’t relish the thought of [Fields] getting the death penalty. That’s my belief. I’d rather him get his heart straight and get life [in prison].” On the issue of Fields’s hateful beliefs, Heyer wondered, “What happened to make him hate that much? You don’t just wake up in the morning like that. He had hatred building up in him for years.” Heyer expressed sympathy for Fields’s family, saying, “He was too stupid and too young to realize what he was about to do would change his whole life. I think about his mother and what she’s having to go through.” During the state court trial, Fields’s lawyers presented evidence that he had suffered from psychiatric disorders dating back to his early childhood. Heather Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, has not publicly shared her views on the appropriate punishment for Fields, but has promoted her daughter’s legacy of fighting racism. In an email to BuzzFeed News, she wrote that killing Fields “would not bring Heather back.”

Federal prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty against Fields..."

WHY IT WILL BE HARD TO CONVICT NEO-NAZI JAMES ALEX FIELDS OF HATE CRIMES

Dec 13, 2018

"...federal prosecutors tasked with convicting Fields on 29 additional hate crimes face a tougher battle, although they haven’t ruled out seeking the death penalty.

Hate crimes are difficult to prove because the burden falls on the prosecution to demonstrate that bias or hatred against a protected group motivated an individual to commit a crime. In Fields’ case, federal prosecutors will need to show that the 21-year-old neo-Nazi rammed his car into a crowd during last year’s violent “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, to harm the ethnically and racially diverse protesters — not just because he viewed them as his ideological or political opponents...."

Thanks for the heads up, at this moment in time I don't personally feel the need to view any extra footage. Not criticising anyone who wants to look, I just feel justice has been done in my opinion and I'm happy to leave it there.

And thanks YON for updating the El Chapo thread. I'll catch up on it sometime, but I'm well behind, at least 7 or 8 pages.

Fields sentencing in Heyer's killing postponed to July

3/4/2019

"A sentencing hearing has been delayed for a man convicted of driving his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at the 2017 Unite the Right white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

James Alex Fields Jr., of Maumee, Ohio, was convicted in December of first-degree murder in the killing of anti-racism activist Heather Heyer and multiple charges for injuries caused to others.

The jury recommended life in prison, plus 419 years.

A sentencing hearing originally was scheduled for March 29. But an online court docket entry shows the hearing has been postponed until July 15. No reason was given for the postponement.

Charlottesville Circuit Judge Richard Moore will decide on Fields’ punishment. Judges in Virginia often go along with the jury’s recommendation. Under state law, they can impose a shorter sentence but not a longer one.

Fields also faces 30 federal hate crime charges, some of which could carry the death penalty. A status hearing for that case is scheduled for March 26."

The sentence is very good news and is needed to send a clear detterant about political violence whether the perpetrators are from the right (as in this case), or from their opposites on the left.

As a side note, the Spanish Civil war went personal and very nasty very fast. The seeds were sown several years earlier when rival right and left wing groups started to intimidate each other and the population in general via 'shows of force, "random" attacks, forming vigilante patrols, making threats, and engaging in street fighting.

It is best to nip this in the bud and an LWOP sentence is a good place to start.

Driver James Alex Fields Pleads Guilty To Hate Crime For Deadly Charlottesville Car Attack (with clip)
Fields, a white nationalist, is charged with intentionally killing Heather Heyer with his car at the “Unite the Right” rally.

"James Alex Fields Jr., the avowed white nationalist charged with intentionally ramming his car into a group of counterprotesters at a deadly 2017 white supremacist rally, pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal hate crime charges.

Fields pleaded guilty to 29 of the 30 federal charges brought against him linked to his part in the attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, that killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured 19 others.

He admitted that he drove his car into the crowd of counterprotesters, which included Heyer, because of the group’s perceived race, color, nationality or religion ― which are all possible motivating prejudices under the federal definition of a hate crime. He also admitted that he intended to kill the other victims who were injured in the attack....

Fields reportedly pleaded guilty to all but one of the federal charges on Wednesday to avoid facing the death penalty, according to NBC News. The charge that Fields pleaded not guilty to could carry a death penalty sentence.

Each of the 29 counts to which Fields pleaded guilty carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

He is scheduled to reappear in federal court on July 3. ..."

Sentencing looms in Charlottesville attack; man seeks mercy

June 24th 2019

"RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The avowed white supremacist who plowed his car into counterdemonstrators opposing a white nationalist rally in Virginia two years ago, killing one person and injuring dozens, has asked a judge for mercy and a sentence shorter than life in prison.

Lawyers for James Alex Fields Jr., 22, said in a sentencing memo submitted in court documents Friday that the defendant should not spend his entire life in prison because of his age, a traumatic childhood and a history of mental illness. Fields pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes in March and is set to be sentenced on June 28.

"No amount of punishment imposed on James can repair the damage he caused to dozens of innocent people. But this Court should find that retribution has limits," his attorneys wrote.

But prosecutors countered that the avowed anti-Semite and Adolf Hitler admirer has shown no remorse since he drove the car into the counterdemonstrators on Aug. 12, 2017, killing anti-racism activist Heather Heyer and injuring others protesting against the white nationalists...."

He's asking for mercy, although he showed no mercy toward the people he plowed into?! He's a danger to society and should spend the rest of his life in prison, IMO.

Charlottesville car rammer sentenced to life in prison

June 28, 2019

"The man convicted for ramming his car into a crowd during the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville has been sentenced to life in prison.

James Alex Fields had his sentencing hearing in federal court in Virginia, in the same town where his 2017 car ramming led to the death of a counter-protester, Heather Heyer, and injured others.

Fields, who is now 22, already pleaded guilty to 29 of 30 federal hate crimes in March. The Associated Press reports that in part of the plea deal that he reached at the time, the prospect of a death sentence was removed....

Friday's sentencing in federal court is separate from state charges that he faces in connection to the same incident.
In the state case, a jury recommended a sentence of life plus 419 years, though a separate hearing on that sentence is scheduled for mid-July...."

Finally, justice. It won't bring back Heather Heyer, nor will it help those who were so horribly wounded by this hateful crime, but the killer won't be free to victimize more innocent people.

Man faces second sentence in Charlottesville car attack

July 15, 2019

"CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A man sentenced to life in prison on federal hate crime charges for deliberately driving his car into anti-racism protesters during a white nationalist rally in Virginia is set to face a state judge who could add another life sentence, plus 419 years.

James Alex Fields Jr., 22, will be sentenced Monday for killing one person and injuring dozens during the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017.

Last month, Fields received a life sentence on 29 federal hate crime charges.

A state jury has recommended a sentence of life, plus 419 years. Under state law, Judge Richard Moore is allowed to go lower than the jury’s recommendation, but cannot go higher...."

Man faces second sentence in Charlottesville car attack

It looks like the judge gave him the recommended sentence - life plus 419 years. This sends a clear warning to other white supremacists contemplating violence and hate crimes. Not even kind words from some folks can prevent you paying a heavy price.

Man gets life plus 419 years in deadly Charlottesville car attack

Fields, an avowed white supremacist who kept a photo of Adolf Hitler on his bedside table, drove from his home in Maumee, Ohio, to attend the rally, which drew hundreds of white nationalists to Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The event also drew counterprotesters who demonstrated against the white nationalists.

Violent skirmishes between the two sides prompted police to declare an unlawful assembly and to order the groups to disband before the rally could even begin. Later that day, Fields plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing Heather Heyer, 32, and injuring more than two dozen others.

He killed one innocent person, but badly injured many others, some who will suffer for life. RIP Heather Hyer.
