NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
The defense has rested its case. The prosecution called one rebuttal witness: Detectice Steve Young with the Charlottesville Police Department (has testified 3 times).

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
The commonwealth went over a series of Facebook geo-locations that Young collected on Fields. They detailed his location throughout the day of August 12, 2017.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
Young said he spoke with Dwayne Dixon, who testified earlier today and said he saw a gray muscle car three times in the area of Market Street that day.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
According to geo-locations of Fields collected by Young, Fields was in that area only once that day; at 1:38 p.m. on E Jefferson Street at the SE cirner of Court Square Park.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
Judge Moore has denied the defense's motion to strike evidence used by the prosecution, including the Instagram memes, Hitler text photograph, and phone calls made by Fields to his mom from jail.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
Judge Moore said all of that evidence was found relevant and can be used to support malice or intent

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
Judge Moore also denied the defense's motion to strike charges against Fields. The commonwealth relied on arguments made last time the defense motioned for those strikes.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
The defense also renewed their motion to appeal the court's ruling to keep the jury trial in Charlottesville. Judge Moore denied it, saying they could (and did) seat a fair and impartial jury in Charlottesville.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
Judge Moore said 2 jurors were sat against the wishes of the defense. He said 28 potential jurors were excused upon the request of the defense during jury selection.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 2h2 hours ago
The court is now in recess. Attorneys are preparing closing arguments and will present them to the jury soon.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 24m24 minutes ago
Antony is delivering the closing argument for the commonwealth. She reiterated that this case is about intent. She said the group is about the group on 4th Street, which was described as joyful and happy.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 23m23 minutes ago
She told the jury it is time to answer the central question: "what was in his mind when he flew into the crowd?"

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 23m23 minutes ago
She then talked to the jury about malice, intent, and premeditation and how the jury can use evidence to prove them.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 21m21 minutes ago
She said Fields' car was being used the same as a deadly weapon in the matter he was using it. She said the deliberate act of accelerating into the crowd meant to do them harm. She said evidence shows no one was near him before he drove into the crowd and faced no danger.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17m17 minutes ago
She said Fields' driving backwards was "slow, deliberate, and careful" when he drove on what was described by a witness as a "ghost town" on 4th Street.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 15m15 minutes ago
Antony said there was no evidence anyone harassed Fields that day. She called Dwayne Dixon "mistaken" because geo-location data of Fields shows he wasn't in the same area as Dixon during the timeframe of his testimony.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 13m13 minutes ago
Antony said that according to the defense witnesses, Fields was calm on August 12 and nothing was wrong with him, indicating a controled state of mind. She said testimonies show that downtown Charlottesville was calm during the time leading up to the attack.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 11m11 minutes ago
Antony said something changes in Fields when he gets on 4th Street and that's what the jury needs to decide what went in his head. She said hatred shows when he sees the crowd on Water Street.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 10m10 minutes ago
Evidence from his text to his mom of "We're not the ones who need to be careful" text with a picture of Hitler, chanting in and outside the park, and his description of the group in phone calls to his mom indicate hatred of them.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 8m8 minutes ago
On the matter of intent, Antony made clear that intent can be any amount of time. She said video from Red Pump shows his intent by backing up then driving fast. She said his intent was not to kill Heyer specifically, but to kill any member of the group.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 8m8 minutes ago
She told the jury that evidence from photographs show he did not attempt to brake or stop when impacting the crowd. "What intent could he have other than to harm or kill" she said.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 5m5 minutes ago
Antony said Instagram photos used as evidence are not to infer he was planning for 3 months to attack, but rather gave a glimpse into Fields' mind and what he thinks about protesters. On 4th Street, Fields "seizes his opportunity to make Instagram post a reality," Antony said.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 4m4 minutes ago
Antony then went on to list all 10 charges Fields faces, including first-degree murder, and that he should be found guilty on each one. She said guilty verdicts reflect what he did that day.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 15m15 minutes ago
She described the extent if the injuries of the victims and the permanent nature of some of them and the role they plan in the 5 charges of aggrivated malicious wounding and 3 charges of malicious wounding.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 14m14 minutes ago
Antony is done speaking. The jury took a 5 minute break before the defense began their closing argument.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
During closing arguments, Defense Attorney Denise Lunsford closed by asking the jury to consider whether Fields acted with actual malice.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
She argued that he was 20 years old at the time and that he posted a meme on social media in private, not unlike others his age.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
She added, "a meme is not an expression of intent, necessarily."

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
She finished up by saying that he acted out of fear rather than hatred and malice. He planned to go home and had his mapping instructions in his phone.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
Asst. Commonwealths Attorney Antony spoke to the jury a final time about how sometimes memes do mean what they mean and that he turned the meme he posted on social media into a reality.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
She then showed the jury a photo of Fields during the incident and said that this is "not the face of someone who is scared."

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
Lunsford argued that Fields' actions were the result of a "perfect storm," but Antony argued otherwise and that his actions were intentional.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
Lunsford asked the jury to find Fields guilty of no more than manslaughter of Heyer and unlawful wounding of those injured.

NBC29 Fields Trial‏ @NBC29Trials 17h17 hours ago
The jury will reconvene tomorrow morning to begin deliberating the case.

Below is the infamous crash video. The supporters of James Fields claim he panicked and sped up after his rear bumper was swung at and hit with a flag stick (0:03). I've watched this video many times but cannot tell if he actually did speed up. What do my fellow websleuthers think? The supporters claim his car was attacked by the man with the flag stick, but I think that man was just reacting to the fact that Fields was about to crash into the crowd. Fields was the one who was attacking. I wonder if the "stick man" will testify.

It's a bit funny that Fields' supporters have been saying he panicked and sped up into the crowd after being hit by the stick, yet a crash reconstruction expert testified that Fields was going 28 mph, then actually slowed to 23 mph as he was driving through the crowd.
