Held without bond. No plea entered yet, arraignment was continued with no date.
The Medical Examiner's Office in Norfolk have identified a woman's body that was found in the southern part of Suffolk Tuesday (3/19/19) morning as missing Southampton County mother of 2, Cynthia Carver, the Southampton County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday. Found his DNA under her fingernails and his Nike shoe print on the floor of her house.
7/2/19 Arraignment hearing is continued but no date as of 10/27/19. Next Preliminary hearing on 10/29. 10/29/19: Preliminary hearing continued to 12/3. 12/3/19: Preliminary hearing continued to 2/18/20.
2/18/20 Update: Four witnesses took the stand during the preliminary hearing: three law enforcement officers and Carver’s mother. Judge ruled that there is probable cause to move the case forward. Next Grand Jury hearing on 3/16.
3/16/20 Update: Grand Jury returns True Bill. Next arraignment on 3/26.

Carver murder suspect asks judge to move trial, not allow jury to see crime scene photos | WAVY.com

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — James Goodwyn, the man charged with first-degree murder in the death of 34-year-old Cynthia Carver, had a court appearance Monday. The defense team had some pre-trial requests.

On Monday, Goodwyn’s lawyers filed a motion to move the trial out of Southampton County, arguing the pre-trial media coverage of the case would make it difficult to seat an unbiased jury.

The judge said it’s too early to rule one way or the other on the motion and requested they attempt to seat a jury before moving the trial.

The defense also asked the judge to not allow crime scene photos or photos of the victim at the trial, arguing some are so gruesome the images might bias the jury against Goodwyn. Prosecutors argued the photos were necessary to show the horrible nature of the crime. The judge denied the defense’s motion, saying just because pictures are gruesome does not make them inadmissible in court.
