Neighbors React to Human Remains Believed to be Hannah Graham

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - Searchers found what is believed to be the remains of Hannah graham at noon Saturday on an abandoned property off of old Lynchburg road in Albemarle County.

Road blocks are set up along Old Lynchburg Road between Red Hill Road and Plank Road. Dozens of Albemarle County police cruisers set those up at every entrance to the area Saturday afternoon.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — The Chesterfield Sheriff’s Department sergeant who discovered human remains while searching for missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham said he believed God wanted them to find what they found. In an exclusive interview with Melissa Hipolit, Sgt. Dale Terry said his five-person team had finished their search mission near Walnut Creek Park around noon Saturday when something came over him to check nearby properties.

“I don’t know how else to explain it,” he said. “Something inside me just told me to continue to look.”

It was behind a vacant home, in a dried-up creek bed, Terry said he found a skull and bones, along with a pair of tight, dark-colored pants.

The skeletal remains of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham are believed to have been found here, at 3193 Old Lynchburg Road— discovered in a dry creek bed behind this empty house, five weeks to the day since she was last seen.
 
CHARLOTTESVILLE—Police on Sunday combed a narrow two-lane back road near an abandoned property in Albemarle County south of here, where searchers on Saturday found human remains believed to be those of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.

Police on Sunday blocked off a three-mile section of Old Lynchburg Road near where the body was found as investigators scoured the area. For much of its length the road is unmarked and without shoulders, surrounded by woods that are turning amber, gold and crimson, and with houses set back from the pavement, several with white country fences. A tiny brick church sits at one end of the barricaded stretch, across the road from a cemetery with several dozen very weathered tombstones.

Investigators also interviewed residents in the area Sunday, and forensic teams combed the sides of a road for several miles past the site.
It was not immediately known what they were looking for.

In September, police charged 32-year-old Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. with abduction with intent to defile in Graham's disappearance. His attorney, Jim Camblos, issued a statement late Saturday night.
"I understand the search teams found remains on an abandoned farm in Albemarle County. We are waiting to see the results of the medical examiners autopsy. No further comment."

A grand jury indicted Matthew on Monday for attempted capital murder, abduction and sexual penetration with an object, according to documents filed in Fairfax County Circuit Court.

The indictment spells out the three charges against Matthew.

“On or about the 24th day of September, 2005, in the City of Fairfax, Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr. did feloniously, willfully, deliberately, intentionally and with premeditation attempt to kill R.G. in the commission of or subsequent to an abduction with the intent to defile,” the first count against Matthew reads.

The second count says that Matthew “did feloniously abduct R.G. with the intent to defile.”

The third count states that Matthew penetrated the victim “against her will, by force, threat or intimidation.”

The fresh charges stem from an attack on a 26-year-old woman that occurred as she was walking home from a Giant on Jermantown Road on the night of Sept. 24, 2005. Police said the woman was grabbed from behind about 10 p.m. and carried from Rock Garden Drive to a nearby wooded area, where she was assaulted. The suspect then fled.

Law enforcement officials had previously announced a forensic link between the Fairfax City rape case and the 2009 disappearance of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who vanished after attending a concert on the U-Va. campus. Matthew has not been charged in that case.

Officials announced in 2010 that a 2005 abduction and sexual assault in that city was forensically linked to the 2009 abduction of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington in Charlottesville.

The victim in that attack survived and helped police create a widely-circulated sketch of her attacker. Police later linked the Morgan Harrington and Hannah Graham cases via DNA.

Va. man talks of buzzard sighting near remains

Bobby Pugh tells WTOP and WVTF that as he drove to work one day in late September or early October, his eyes were drawn to the abandoned home at 3193 Old Lynchburg Road, on a winding, narrow stretch of the road that connects Charlottesville to Lynchburg.

"I noticed there was quite a few buzzards on the roof, as well as in the trees in the backyard, maybe 20 to 30 of them," says Pugh. "They were definitely there scavenging for something.

Investigators are looking in the Albemarle County area where human remains were found Saturday to see if it is a dumping ground for bodies, sources told CNN.

Sources told CNN that skeletal remains are still at the crime scene. Once the rest of those remains are removed, investigators will dig several feet below to collect the dirt that was under the torso, CNN reports.

Investigators are scouring the area for more clothing and other potential evidence, sources said.

WDBJ 7&#8217;s Nadine Maeser ventured out Tuesday afternoon in search of Matthew's mother to get her side of the story.

She wasn&#8217;t at her Nelson County home, but neighbors said she hasn't been there for a few days.

After speaking with some of them, we're learning Matthew's run in with the law is affecting those that live across the county line.

Tucked away off Route 29 in Nelson County is a small and peaceful community.

"Ugh my name is Andrew Wells,&#8221; said neighbor Andrew Wells. &#8220;They call me AD."

It&#8217;s a paved road where everyone knows everyone called Wells Lane.

The body was discovered on an abandoned property off Old Lynchburg Road in Albemarle County. Joe McDaniel said his family used to own the property.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The man charged in the disappearance of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham may not learn of the evidence against him until after he's prosecuted in a courtroom 100 miles away.


On Monday, Jesse Matthew was indicted in Fairfax County on three felony counts related to a 2005 sexual assault. It's unclear where the 32-year-old Albemarle County resident will first stand trial.
