Vivica A. Fox Gets Racial

I used to do sports and entertainment marketing. One of my jobs was to escort and basically babysit celebs/athletes' families during events like All-Star and the finals. Vivica was one of those people who constantly bitched about everything. Her seat wasn't good enough. Why does so and so have a better seat than her when she is a bigger celeb, etc. It was just nonstop bitching. She seemed to be one of those people who felt powerful and got off putting those "beneath" her in their place. We used to do rock, paper, scissors to see who had to deal with her. ;)

As for Michael Rappaport, he is no better. He constantly threw temper tantrums about the green room having too many "non-famous" people in there. We used to crack up. We would bring him to the green room, he would check it out, grab some food and drink, then have a tantrum, stomp off, only to return a little while later like nothing happened. Plus he was frequently late for events we had him doing with kids. That is a big no no in my book and it was a good way to judge people - how they acted when they were doing an event for children.

Wow...I would have never thought he would have been like that!!!....I'm sure you have lots of stories you could tell!!!

I thought only white people could be racist
:snooty:

Why does this argument keep coming up here? To my knowledge, no one at WebSleuths has ever argued any such thing.

There was an old Marxist argument that intolerance on the part of the powerless was meaningless and therefore wasn't worth mentioning or "didn't exist." But that was a political calculation, not an objective fact, and it has been decades since Marxist adages held much sway.

Is there a special word for sarcasm directed at your own straw-man? There ought to be.

Boy, you talk a lot....

It was a joke based on what Spike Lee said years ago. "Black people can't be racist. It's impossible. Only white people can be racist, and I am not white."

Rino, I hope you know my response earlier was a joke also;) .....LOL

Yeah, I know lol.

What I don't know is why you didn't come under attack, too. Guess you're not as special as me :D

So one black man says something silly "years ago" and white people (not just you, Rino) bring it up every time any black person does anything? Doesn't that strike anyone as a tad odd?

And posters here think African Americans have a problem "letting things go"!

(Rino, if my posts here strike you as "attacks," then I congratulate you on a lovely, if very sheltered, existence.)

Hey there Nova!! Haven't seen you much since I decided to retreat from the political forums!! Hope all is well with you!!:blowkiss:

I think what Rino is trying to say is that this double standard of whites/blacks making statements is not equal....is that right Rino??
Why is it fair that Kraemer (forgot his real name) makes a comment and it's all over the front pages, he's going to therapy, making apologies, his career ruined; but there is no mention of the comments Ms Fox has made (other than here on WS)?? I don't think anyone here is racist....just making conversation!! :D

Oh, I'm around. Rino will tell you "around too much." :)

Hope all is well with you, too. :blowkiss:

I didn't accuse Rino of being racist. (If my post seemed to do so, Rino, I sincerely apologize.)

Vivica Fox is apparently a jerk. I think everyone will agree jerks comes in all sizes, colors, genders, etc.

But if her remark gets less media attention than Mel Gibson's or Michael Richards', I think we can understand why: celebrity, history and numbers. Most importantly, Gibson and Richards are much, much bigger stars.

And in our country, rich white men spouting off about Jews and blacks has a much deadlier history than black resentment of whites.

I think the glee in our "Look! Black people can be racist, too!" is peculiar. If we ourselves don't go around using racial epithets, why does a double standard (if one exists) bother us?

But even our assumption that a double standard is in play is problematic. Look at the outrage over the Duke lacrosse players wrongly accused (but exonerated before trial) versus the relative indifference over the many African Americans of Tula, Texas, who went to prison for years because of false accusations.

Media attention is a strange animal. It would be wrong to assume it always works in favor of people of color and to the detriment of whites.

Actually, I don't think she was all that serious, she was drunk and flirting with who she thought would be most sympathetic to her cause - jmo.

Randomly calling whites racist is just like the joke I made any you followed up on. Just a joke

I really didn't mean as much as you give me credit for, and Nova tends to read far more into what I say than what I actaully say.

I think you are almost certainly right about Fox's motive. Doesn't make it any prettier, but it also probably isn't a major moment in racial relations.

In terms of you personally, Rino, I'm sure I did make too much of what was just a joke. I'm sorry about that. As I said above, it was never my intent to accuse you of animus toward any racial group.

But the "double standard" idea comes up a lot here, even though arguments such as Spike Lee's are in short supply. Frankly, I am baffled at the notion that Black Americans--as a whole--are "getting away with things" right and left.

I was responding to that oft-repeated notion and your post just supplied an opportunity.

Seems like I've stumbled into a torrid love affair....LOL....

It's funny. In real life, people don't usually complain that I pay too much attention and take them too seriously. ;) :truce:

Just throwing in my 2 cents...

I just read through the thread for the first time, and I didn't realize Rino's post was a joke at first...

Sometimes things are difficult to convey in writing, without the benefit of hearing tone of voice, or seeing facial expressions to help pick up on meaning.

I can see where the confusion came from, is all.
