SAN DIEGO -- The FBI believes a missing 5-year-old girl from Washington state may be in the San Diego area.

Aranza Lopez was taken from a mall in Washington in October by her mother, Esmeralda Lopez, during a supervised visit. The mother was already wanted by authorities for kidnapping and robbery.

Investigators think the mother and daughter are probably in Mexico with Lopez's boyfriend. But they also have ties to San Diego, and might be staying on the US side of the border.

The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the girl's recovery or he mother's arrest.

A woman accused of kidnapping her daughter and fleeing to Mexico was arrested after almost a year on the run.

According to the Clark County Jail website, Esmeralda Lopez-Lopez, 22, was booked on Thursday, Oct. 3 on charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree theft, and two counts of identity theft.

Aranza has still not been found.

Bail was set at $1.5 million Friday for a mother who allegedly kidnapped her now 5-year-old daughter during a supervised visit at Vancouver Mall nearly a year ago and took her to Mexico.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Kasey Vu said that “to this day, the state doesn’t have information about the whereabouts of the child.” Law enforcement believes Aranza Ochoa-Lopez is still in Mexico with family.

Her mother, Esmeralda Lopez-Lopez, 22, pleaded not guilty Friday in Clark County Superior Court to charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, second-degree theft, motor vehicle theft, second-degree identity theft and first-degree custodial interference. A Spanish interpreter accompanied her during the hearing. Bail set at $1.5 million for mother accused in kidnapping

Another all too common type of case involves children kidnapped by their parents. The bureau is actively working on the case of now 6-year-old Aranza Lopez, who was taken by her mother during a supervised visit in Vancouver, Washington.

"She was dangerous to her child, there was a history of abuse," says Agent O'Reilley.

The FBI located her mother in Mexico, but Aranza is still missing. Agent O'Reilley says there's a reason why the child was a ward of the state, and the agency feels the little girl isn't safe.

ARANZA MARIA OCHOA LOPEZ — FBI

MAR 8, 2023

Found safe in Mexico.

In February 2023 Mexican authorities were able to locate and safely recover Aranza, and FBI special agents escorted her back to the United States.

“For more than four years, the FBI and our partners did not give up on Aranza,” said Richard A. Collodi, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Seattle field office. “Our concern now will be supporting Aranza as she begins her reintegration into the U.S.”

Aranza’s safety and privacy mean that her location in the United States will not be disclosed and no additional information will be released at this time.

Aranza was kidnapped by her biological non-custodial mother from a Vancouver, Wash. shopping mall. The FBI issued a missing person poster and was able to determine Aranza had been taken to Mexico but did not have a way to recover her.

Her mother was arrested in Vancouver in 2019, but Aranza remained in Mexico until her location was revealed.

Gosh I just saw this, and it gave me hope for so many kids, and I must say I prayed extra today for all missing kids, and for little Dulce to be found.
