Incidentally, If anyone is interested, the casefile of the Bellingham police department on this issue is available here:

The Georgia-Pacfic doe. #862UMWA | Dna Profiling | Law Enforcement

It contains approx 203 actual pages. Being scribd, it does require a membership, but you can join for 30 days for free. (I find a lot of complaints about the service though.) They also apparently have files on some other high profile cases.

Unidentified White Male
* The victim was discovered on September 20, 1987 in Bellingham County, Washington
* Estimated Date of Death: January 8, 1987- September 15, 1987
* Cause of Death: Hypothermia
* Charred & Skeletal Remains

Vital Statistics
* Estimated age: 27 - 37 years old
* Approximate Height and Weight: 5'8"-5'9"; 130 - 155 lbs.
* Distinguishing Characteristics: The victim had small feet, probably wearing a size 8 shoe.
* Dentals: Available. Dental work, including silver and gold fillings and possibly a root canal. It was not indigent dental work, it was good quality care for the time frame.
* Clothing: Charred remnants of denim pants and a denim jacket, a lightweight shirt, and rubber-soled shoes. The coat was found under the body, apparently to shield him from the heat. The shirt was draped or wrapped around one ankle, possibly to bind an injury. Police also found a burned remnant of a Continental Airlines ticket or baggage claim, but could not make out the numbers to trace the ticket.
* DNA: The chimney heat destroyed DNA.

Case History
The victim was located inside a Georgia-Pacific West Inc. chimney No. 9. A worker checking for a possible water leak found the body on September 20, 1987.

The victim's crumpled skeleton was found atop parallel pipes near the bottom of the chimney. The pipes, which carried water heated by boiler exhaust, were 240 degrees. The air was 95 degrees, unless the boiler was running, when temperatures reached 370.
Officials estimated the victim had been in the chimney a few days to a few weeks. Records showed the boiler operated for 34 hours during September 17 and September 18, two days before the body was found, plus more hours the previous month.

No keys, ID, wallet, ring, watch nor clothes or tools indicating the victim was a worker were located. No missing workers were reported and no abandoned vehicle was found.

The chimney was difficult to reach. The person had to climb a number of stairs inside the plant, and then make his way to the roof of the building.
Although a metal door was present at the base of the stack, it took police two hours to pry it open, making it an unfeasible way for the victim to have gotten in.

A medical examination yielded the presence of broken bones, indicating the body probably fell into the stack.
The unusual location of the body fueled speculation that the discovery was that of a murder or suicide victim.

Two images of the man were drawn years apart, in 1987 and 2000, by different artists. They represent independent guesses of what he looked like, based on his intact skull.
Records showed the boiler operated for 34 hours during September 17 and September 18, two days before the body was found.
Does anyone know why that 'inactive' boiler was run during that time? Who operated it during that time? Is it stated on the record?
Seems that only people who worked at that plant at the time would know. Who,what,when,and how. Ie who had access, who knew how to operate the controls?
I think it's much like being in a fish bowl, and very much narrows the pool of persons who would know anything, thusly narrowing the number of person/s involved.
MOO

This case reminds me of another homicide case, I'm not sure if it was 'real' though (as in it could of been on Law & order, CSI, etc.). Even if it wasn't 'real' it could of been based off this one, the victim was found in a similar manner or place, he had worked there and was a whistle blower, he had been called in for something even though he had planned to either leave or had already left the area, either way he arrived at the plant and was killed there. I think this one was at a nuclear facility though but again..., I'm not really sure. ><;

A couple of additional tidbits.

Regarding the boiler, it appears to have been a extra boiler that was not regularly used, It was not fired until after the labor day weekend, which is why I posit that he had expired well before the boiler was fired.

I have since acquired the file on the case. It contains some 203 items, including pictures of the skull. Apparently, the remains were cremated to totality and buried in a paupers grave. They did retain some photos and x rays of his teeth.

The total file on my desktop has some 65 plus megabytes of information, including a transcript of the youtube video, copies of the news articles and such. Here is a table of contents of the police file:

Okay so only dentals as identifiers. Since they have a skull photo I wonder if they could be convinced to do a decent recon?

There are two reconstructions that were done, and a possible third that seems to be missing. One is absolutely garish and the other is marginal. I have attached the files.

Records showed the boiler operated for 34 hours during September 17 and September 18, two days before the body was found.
Does anyone know why that 'inactive' boiler was run during that time? Who operated it during that time? Is it stated on the record? MOO

The records are attached regarding the boiler firings from the Bellingham police file.

My thoughts are he was an urban explorer who entered the grounds soon after the closing before Labor day, As there was a long weekend from Friday, (4 Sept 87) to Tue (8 Sept 87).

Friday Sept 4. Facility shuts down for long labor day weekend
Sept 4-5. He enters closed facility and falls into boiler stack
Tuesday Sept 8. Work resumes at facility
Sept 17 Boiler fired for 20 hours
Sept 18 Boiler fired for 14 hours
Sept 20 Body found due to alarm

It seems likely that he entered the property on the evening of the 4th or 5th of September The boiler was fired on Sept 17 for 20 hours, and 14 hours on Sept 18. Later his skeletonized remains were found on Sunday, Sept 20, 1987, Some 16 days after the plant closed for the holiday.

He likely fell the 17 feet into the stack and onto the pipes, that evening and he broke a femur and ankle or both. As a result, he died of blood loss and exposure before the boilers were ever fired, several days later.

As the yellow diagrams show, the fall was 17'5" from the rim to the pipes. There was a cross pipe 10 feet above the pipes. With a broken femur and ankle(s) there was no way he could escape. If anyone was with him, they took off and left him to his fate. If someone from the factory allowed him into the facility, he would have engendered criminal liability for the man's death. A very good reason to keep one's mouth shut.

Attached Files: 2 pages, regarding firing dates and and length of boiler filing
4 pages diagrams showing position of where body found.

Photos of stack:

1st picture. Boiler stack from outside. You can see the corrugated tin roof level with the stack opening where he likely fell in.
2nd Another view of Boiler stack. Round protuberance in white area is crossbar that was 10 feet above pipes. Gives an idea how far he fell.
3rd Inside view of stack that corresponds with yellow sheet showing inside view at level where body was found.
4th GRAPHIC. View down stack showing position of remains.
5th GRAPHIC View of recovered skeleton

whorton, thanks for all the excellent pics and information!

As I used to do the same sort of Urban exploration when I was younger (1980's) I can certainly appreciate how the guy likely fell in. We still see all sorts of people getting hurt or killed doing similar foolish things. If it is dark and you are not paying attention, one slip could be fatal.

I would love to see this case solved. I honestly don't think it likely as I have perused many a missing person case on Namus. I suspect this poor fella was never turned out as missing as he either had no family or was somehow disaffected from his family.

Hmmmm.D.B. Cooper? Jumped at night, went right down a chimney! Nah, the dates don’t fit! and wrong part of Washington. Interesting thought, though.

Hello everyone. My grandpa is Archer Johnson, missing from WA since 1986. I've recently been doing a bit of digging myself and came across the Whatcom County John Doe as well. I find the sketch to be strikingly similar to my grandpa. I found this thread and another on Reddit regarding this unidentified body, both of which had links to Archer's NamUs.
The local sheriff for my grandpa, Grays Harbor County, has not been much help at all in assisting. I have reached out to NamUs to see if we can somehow compare dentals for a possible match. Will keep updated. Thank you all for your time, it is nice knowing people out there do care about missing and unidentified.
