SPOKANE -- A registered nurse pleaded guilty to raping a severely disabled 12-year-old girl in his care.
Raymond C.Carl Hughes, 35, was supposed to be caring for the quadriplegic girl at her north Spokane home when he raped her last April, prosecutors allege.
Hughes pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree child rape and one count of second-degree rape. Defense lawyer George Caplan said he will ask that one of the counts be thrown out at sentencing Dec. 9.
Hughes faces a minimum sentence of 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 years in prison, with a possible maximum of life in prison as a serious sex offender.
The girl, who is dying of complications from cerebral palsy, can't speak or move, Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor Kelly Fitzgerald said. Hughes was filling in for the girl's regular home-care nurse, who had a family emergency.
