HUDSON, Wis. (FOX 9) - As witness testimony began Monday in the trial of Nicolae Miu, the man charged with murder in the stabbing on the Apple River in Wisconsin in 2022, the court reviewed a video that showed the deadly moments during the stabbing.

The video shows the confrontation between Miu and another group of tubers on the river leading up to and during the July 2022 stabbing that injured four people and left a Stillwater teen dead. It doesn't show exactly what preceded the confrontation, but rather the moments as the verbal altercation escalated into a fight and then eventually a stabbing.

Defense plays video of defendant walking away from the teens while they yell at him that he likes to have sex with little girls and calls him a "raper". The defendant was snorkeling by their tubes. Defense says he was looking for his friend's cellphone that was lost in the river.

Thus far, opinion only, Prosecution Opening Statement well done and Defense Opening Statement got on my last nerve.

Nicolae Miu, 54, is accused of stabbing a teenager to death, and injuring four others, while tubing on the Apple River in Wisconsin back in July of 2022. Isaac Schuman, 17, was killed and Rhyley Mattison, 24, suffered severe stab wounds. Miu is facing multiple charges including first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree homicide, and battery with a dangerous weapon. Miu claims he acted in self-defense.

DAILY TRIAL UPDATES

DAY 1 – 4/1/24

  • A jury was seated and both sides delivered opening statements.
  • The prosecution’s main argument was that Miu was the aggressor, and he had many opportunities to leave the scene once the teens began yelling at him and taunting him. They say he chose to stay, and he escalated the situation when he punched a woman who confronted him and ordered him to leave the teens alone. They also point to Miu’s lies to law enforcement about having had a knife with him and using it during the fight.

The video shows the fight break out between Nicholae Miu and two groups, and ends with screaming and someone yelling, "This isn't real!"

Brand new to this case, just caught the video on CourtTV and self defense is top of my list right now. Gang/mob mentality, those boys pushed it to a fight. I'd have been scared at that point. He was overpowered and outnumbered. The way these 'teens' are out just 'jumping' people for video content etc, and we see it on the news all the time now, It has def. changed the way i would react in that situation.

@cathyrusson

Prosecution had out of state (bordering state of MN) witnesses brought in today that did not show up yesterday morning as they were supposed to. He asked that the judge reiterate to them if they do not show when either side calls them, they could have a warrant issued.

Not blaming the victim here but sometimes you just want to do what someone else asks you even if it to be quiet. You don't know what kind of crazy people are out there. Some people are strung tight and just looking to punish someone who is maybe just having fun. Do not argue with people... some are jsut crazy angry and will do most

So sad.
