Bones shipped to Texas

Skeletal human remains found early last month in a town of Maple Grove driveway and nearby woodlot have been sent to forensic specialists in Texas for further examination, according to Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald.

The bones were discovered Dec. 3, 2017, after a family dog apparently found them and brought part of a human skull into a driveway in the 1300 block of Tenth Avenue, south of Barron.

A search of a wooded area near the man’s house, located south of Barron, was conducted by Barron County sheriff’s deputies, and the skeletal remains of a body were discovered, said Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald. He said no weapon was found nearby.

Barron County has no missing person cases, and surrounding counties are being contacted as to other missing person cases, he said.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald has issued a statement that a human skeleton found in the town of Maple Grove on Dec. 3, 2017, belongs to a white or, possibly, Asian male, between the ages of 35 and 55, and that there is evidence of a gunshot wound to the head.

The information comes from “an initial report … from … the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification, Forensic Anthropology Unit,” Fitzgerald said in a press release issued just before 11 a.m. today, March 22, 2018.
Fitzgerald said forensic investigators in Texas would be at work over “the next couple of months” to extract DNA information from the remains and upload it to the Unidentified Human Remains Index and the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System to determine if either database may have information about them.

“At this time, we have no missing person cases in the county and will wait for results to come back from the DNA analysis,” Fitzgerald said.

BARRON, Wis. (AP) - Sheriff's officials in northwestern Wisconsin suspect homicide in the case of skeletal remains found last December.

The Barron County Sheriff's Office says an analysis by the University of North Texas forensic anthropology lab discovered the man had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald says since no gun or shell casings were found at the scene, investigators believe he was the victim of a homicide and that his body was dumped where the remains were found in a wooded area south of Barron.

Fitzgerald says the analysis shows the man had been dead at least a year. The sheriff says DNA will be uploaded to national databases as they investigate the case.

Can anyone find MSM confirmation that these remains were ID'd?

Sam's thread was changed to found deceased based on an obituary but he is still in NAMUS: Found Deceased - WI - Sam Vongsoury, 35, Milwaukee, 26 Oct 2017
Missing Person Case

I'm trying to figure out if this was him so the thread can be moved.

This UID case is still in NAMUS: Unidentified Person Case
So either it wasn't Sam or they have not been able to confirm it was him yet (sometimes DNA test can take a year or more depending on condition of the remains).

The Barron County Sheriff recently did a very long interview about the Jayme Closs case. At about 59 minutes into that interview one of the viewer questions was about "the bones found in Barron County" and if they have been identified yet. The Sheriff said that they are still awaiting the DNA test results for this unidentified person case and the bones are still in Texas. Interview can be viewed here: DrydenWire

RSBM for focus:

Sam’s profile appears to have been removed from NAMUS (if you click on the “Missing Person Case” link in the top quote above, you get the “Sorry, we couldn’t find that page, or it is currently not accessible” page).

The UID profile is still there with one exclusion: Mr. Leonard Lawrence Rader Jr., missing from Superior, WI since 1998.

Update:
The Barron County Sheriff's Department gave an update Monday regarding bones found south of Barron in 2017.

According to an original release from the sheriff's department on Dec. 4, 2017, a dog brought home the apparent remains of a skull, which when reported to authorities, triggered a search that led to the discovery of human skeletal remains.

On Monday, the department said the bones were sent back to the University of North Texas where DNA profiles were extracted. The release from the department said some of the information returned included:

  • Likely male
  • Likely of European ancestry, but not excluding Asian descent
  • Age range of 35-55
  • Height near 5-feet 10 inches, give or take 4 inches
Dog discovers skull, triggers search that leads to human remains

The department also said several bones were forwarded, along with the DNA profile, to the DNA Doe Project in California for possible additional extrication.

The release said the DNA Doe Project, which is an all-volunteer organization that works with genetic genealogists, has become a go-to organization for law enforcement, helping solve some of their most intractable cases.

Profiles have also been sent to the DNA Solutions Lab in Oklahoma City for a forensic genealogy build, the department said, in the hope of bringing the case to a conclusion.
