Will Smith slaps Chris Rock on stage live at the OSCARS

@Laughing

It’s as if some folks will come up with anything to justify wrong doing as if that makes it OK.

Jmo

I am glad CR & WS are the same race I can’t imagine where this would be if not.

Jmo

Wonder what WS would have done if Jason Momoa was the presenter & joke teller.

Someone on another forum opined this situation would have evolved quite differently had it been 6'5", 260 lb The Rock on that stage rather than 5'10", 170 lb Chris Rock.

Indeed. Assaulting someone 4 inches shorter and 40 lbs lighter than you doesn't make you a hero. It makes you a bully.

Has anyone seen the apology to Jada that Chris has offered?

Has anyone seen the apology from Jada for laughing after Chris was physically assaulted by her husband? A few other people laughed too but they thought it was a part of the show. She knew it wasn't, so why was she laughing? Surely she must have apologized for her tacky, no class behavior. I just can't seem to find the apology anywhere. (and never will).

He did apologize to Wanda.

Chris Rock apologized to Wanda Sykes after slap

Oscars slap: Why Chris Rock apologized to Wanda Sykes

In an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Sykes said she found out about it backstage, PEOPLE reported.

“I hope he doesn’t mind me saying this, but I saw Chris at [Guy Oseary’s after party] and as soon as I walked up to him, the first thing he said is, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I was like, ‘Why are you apologizing?’ He was like, ‘It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina were doing such a great job. I’m so sorry this is now gonna be about this.’ “

“That’s who Chris is,” Sykes continued.

She said she was sickened by the altercation.

“I’m still a little traumatized by it. And for them to let [Will] stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this?’ This sends the wrong message. If you assault somebody, you get escorted out the building and that’s it. But for them to let him continue, I thought it was gross.”

Sykes says she feels she and her co-hosts deserve an apology.

Grammy bosses increase security after Oscars controversy | Canoe.Com
''The star-studded event is being staged at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, and the organizers are being particularly cautious in their preparations following the controversy at last weekend’s Oscars involving Will Smith and Chris Rock.

“There have been frantic meetings all week to ensure that the show goes smoothly and there are no controversial scenes,” a source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper.

“Organizers have had enough trouble getting the show off the ground with the pandemic to contend with, so adding this into the mix has been a huge pressure.”

''But the star-studded line-up of guests have all been warned that there’s a “strict code of conduct” in place, and a repeat of last weekend’s controversy won’t be tolerated.''

Should Irish and ethnically Irish people be insulted by this use of an Irish surname???

Our culture quietly accepts this slight of an entire group.

Won't be slapping anyone about it, that's for sure.
That's really interesting. In my 6 decades I've heard and read the term "malarkey" countless times, but always just thought it meant "nonsense" or "BS". Never knew it was a slur against the Irish.

President Biden uses that word a lot. And he's Irish himself.

It's not really customary for comedians to send out letters of apology to every actor, politician, government official or public figure they poke fun at in their stand-up routines or late night talk shows.

It's not really a thing.

Right. Otherwise the entire industry of comedy may as well be dissolved.

If anyone saw SNL last night, there were plenty of fierce jokes at the expense of the Smiths, plus the usual barbs at many politicians etc. The entire field of comedy cracks jokes about members of whatever audience is in front of them. A comedy roast is generally considered a mark of prestige for the honoree, who endures a panel of cutting remarks at his or her expense.

In the bygone days of Don Rickles, most people in the entertainment industry, as well as regular people, considered it the highlight of the show if Don Rickles mocked them.

The Academy Awards is not a comedy show, I know that, but Chris Rock is a comedian, and everyone knows that too. He started off with "Jada, I love you" and then cracked his joke about her hair.

Jada and Will have made it a practice to publicize very, very personal aspects of their lives. They are not shrinking violets. Jada has spoken openly about her hair and does not shy away from displaying herself as she is. I thought Chris' joke was very mild but not very humorous. IN NO WAY should his joke have been met with a violent attack on his person and then verbal abuse. There is absolutely no equivalence here.

IMO there's something deep-seated in Will, who has seen his marriage totter on infidelity with a man young enough to be Jada's son. Some kind of raw nerve was struck. He certainly did laugh prior to Jada making an angry face and maybe he felt it was his duty to show his manhood was still intact, if this is his idea of masculinity. And Jada was giggling after Chris was humiliated on stage. Will looked pretty pleased with himself. The audience gave him a standing ovation. He partied after the awards show.

So IMO anything he says now is too late, too feeble, and in service of damage control.

I posted awhile ago that IMO if it were someone more aggressive like Eddie Murphy, I don't think Will would have had the nerve. Others have mentioned The Rock and Jason Momoa. I agree.

Chris is not aggressive and has his own mental health issues with having been bullied through childhood. For Will, this was easy pickings.

The term stems from a time when it was just fine to state or imply that Irish people weren't honest.

Have you heard a person refer to being cheated, or getting a really bad deal as "gypped?" That's a slur against ethnic Gypsy's.

How about "Indian giver?"

Welsh on a bet?

Get off Scot-free? That's actually a tax term from German, oddly enough.

English is such an interesting thing!

On March 13, Wilson hosted the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in London, where Smith won the Leading Actor award for his performance in King Richard—the same film that won him the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday.

In the resurfaced clip of Wilson at the BAFTAs—posted to Reddit's "Facepalm" forum where it has received more than 16,000 votes—she joked that despite Smith's award for King Richard, she believed "his best performance in the past year has been being okay with all of his wife's boyfriends."

Yes it is.

The Oxford English Dictionary, whose first published reference for “malarkey” is from 1929, says the origin of the word is unknown.

The Grammarphobia Blog: A lot of malarkey

Some researchers have suggested possible links to the Irish word “mullachan,” meaning a strong boy or a ruffian, or to the modern Greek word “malakia,” which means, among other things, worthlessness.

Others think it might come from the Irish family name “Mullarkey” and its various spellings. Both Michael Quinion (World Wide Words) and Evan Morris (The Word Detective) suggest the source may be a notorious, long-forgotten Mullarkey.

The word seems to have been popularized by the American newspaper cartoonist T.A. Dorgan, known as Tad, who also helped popularize the terms “hard-boiled” and “kibitzer” in his drawings.

Since we’ll probably never know for sure where the word comes from, all this speculation may turn out to be a lot of malarkey…

Whoda thunk it.

Rebel Wilson's crack about Will and Jada Pinkett Smith relationship returns

One day a few weeks ago I was scrolling thru the channels and happened upon an interview of Will Smith. Can't recall who interviewed him. In any event, the interviewer said something to the effect of that you are okay with infidelity ( on the part of your wife), at which point Smith, who did not like the question said something like - infidelity? there is no infidelity or something like that. It was a totally absurd response.

If I am not mistaken in “his” mind as long as he knows it’s not infidelity or cheating because he knows and is OK with it.

Call me weird but I don’t believe in share and share alike when it comes to husbands/spouses.

Just Traditional.

SNL was even more brutal last night:

“During his acceptance speech, Will Smith said love will make you do crazy things. You know what else makes you do crazy things? Crazy,” Che said. “But I understand where Will’s coming from. I mean, you can’t expect him to sit there and watch another man jump all over his wife — without signing an NDA.”
