Deputies were assisted in the investigation by the West Virginia State Police, West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, cadaver dogs and the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office.

WAR — State authorities confirmed the identity Friday of a McDowell County man whose body was found June 12 in the Warriormine area, but the identity of skeletal remains found Tuesday near War has not yet been determined.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Friday that body found June 12 was that of Billy Joe Baker, 46, of War, who had been missing since May 31, Chief Deputy James E. Muncy Jr. of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said. The body was found by a man cutting grass in a rural area.

Muncy said an investigation into Baker’s death was continuing, and the cause of death had not been determined.

Local law enforcement is also investigating skeletal remains which were found Tuesday evening at Bearwallow Hollow near Berwind Lake, which is in the War area.

The Mercer County case has not been linked to two other cases of human remains recently found in neighboring McDowell County.

“They are not related,” Sgt. A.P. Christian, with the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment, said.

“There is no evidence to suggest these cases are related,” Chief Deputy James E. Muncy Jr. said.

Well, guess they know who the other person is. They keep saying that they are not related cases, so if they don't know who that other person is how could they keep reiterating that? How can they be that sure that the same person is not responsible for both deaths without knowing who one of the subjects even is? So my conclusion is that they know, but just cannot say until it is a fact. Sure is odd though 2 bodies found around the same time and close to each other. But, they are "not related!"

Perhaps the circumstances are different enough they appear not related? We don't know how long these remains were at the location or if they were buried or if clothing was found. We also don't know the sex, age, etc.

Billy Joe Baker went missing from Warriormine, WV May 31 and was found June 12 in War, WV. I have a feeling a previous arrest might be related to his death: Two Arrested After One Man Chased Another Man With An Axe, Other Guy Shoots At Him

Amanda Presutti went missing from Princeton, WV June 9th and was found in Mercer County June 20th. It appears that her remains were found in multiple locations in Mercer County (indicating possible dismemberment or animal activity?) : Amanda Presutti case: No additional remains found despite continued search

Both of the above victims were found in under a month. These still unidentified remains were skeletal so they have probably been there longer than a month. There is a distance of only about 46 miles between the locations of the 3 victims but because of it being in the mountains google says it takes 1 hour 23 minutes to drive: Google Maps

Perhaps those are some reasons why they are thought to be unrelated? If anything, I'm wondering if the two victims found in McDowell County are related as they are very close in location (within about 5 miles). But this could also be a much older case and completely unrelated. All we really know is that the skeletal remains are "recent" as in not historical remains.

MOO.

Buchanan County Sheriff John McClanahan announced Friday that the human remains found in the Berwind Lake Management Area located in neighboring McDowell County, W.Va. have been identified as a missing person, Lonnie Meadows.

The remains were found on June 17, 2019. The positive identification was made after the Federal Bureau of Investigation performed forensic analysis and other scientific examinations on the remains, McClanahan said in a press release Friday.
