Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

DailyMail.com exclusively found the location where Gabby’s transit van was filmed by a Youtuber on August 27th at the Spread Creek campsite. The remains were found not far from where the van was photographed.

The location was found Monday just minutes after law enforcement left the campground around 5:40 p.m. and opened it back up to the public. The campground had been closed to the public since last Saturday.

If I'm understanding this correctly this area is accessible to the public and she was found just lying there not covered, buried, etc, etc? If that is the case how did no one notice a body there from August 27th? to September 19th?

I’m guessing they meant her step-dad, who went to the Tetons to look for her by hiking the same trails.

Is there any clarity on the timeline of the texts? I can see even more how the Yosemite mistake was made if the texts were (paraphrasing):
1. Help Stan out, he won't stop calling
2. No service in Yosemite

Can picture someone stressed out, trying to cover tracks and destroy/alter cell phone data evidence who gets angry cause a call keeps popping up blocking the screen. The upset request comes first, and then a rushed justification follows. MOO and probably not super important, just wrapping my head around the pace of BL's possible actions

I assumed he saw an opportunity to it seem like she was still alive, but in a way where they wouldn't try to contact her. "Texts and voicemails not getting through." And "there's no cell service here."

My opinion is that there was a lot of things the FBI found throughout the course of the day - could have been through the house search, other evidence, etc. They relayed this to the attorney and advised him to cancel the press conference. JMO.

Maybe the FBI search turned up evidence that the parents had not only lied to LE but to the lawyer as well and if he was about to express condolences and claim the parents had no idea, that info would come out to prove that was a lie. Under those circumstances he'd come off looking very bad.

Police weren't thinking that he was in effect "stealing" her vehicle by keeping her keys from her.

Who was the aggressor again?

Who owned the vehicle was an important question police may have overlooked.

First question should have been:

I believe she was likely in relatively decent shape (considering the passage of time), because of how quickly she was identified (preliminary).

Also by how fast her body was removed by the coroner, and how quickly the scene was processed.

The location itself strikes me as more of a dumpsite, just based on where the van was apparently parked, and where her body was located in relation to that.

I think it's possible what happened, happened in the van itself.

That would mean cadaver dogs would pick up on.

A DailyMail reporter found a pink ribbon tied the bushes near where the van was parked on the side of the road.

Investigators left pink marker tape where the couple's van was seen in a YouTube video and more pink marker tape by the cross. There also were red markers in a large circle around the area where investigators had been working.


There were markings with orange paint on several rocks and trees surrounding the cross.

The orange paint on the dead trees was still wet. Near the makeshift cross, a pink ribbon was tied to a dead tree. That pink ribbon was the same type found where Gabby’s transit van was filmed by the YouTuber.

I can't imagine it signifies a death due to natural causes.

The only evidence there is that Brian was controlling of Gabbie's life is an "internet friend" she met a few times from a dating app called Bumble, who may not even be a reliable source IMO. If my girlfriend had a dating app on her phone we would get in an argument/fight too. That's not cool at all and honestly makes me think Gabbie was possibly cheating on Brian or considering it. Who else was she talking to on Bumble, you know?

That’s kinda weird IMO. I worked with someone slightly older than Gabby and Brian who attempted to use dating apps to make friends after a move. They’d always complain how difficult it was to find people who were cool with being just friends on it. And I’d be sitting there listening like duh, it’s a dating app…

Gabby met the aforementioned young lady (Rose?) on Bumble BFF.

I don't use Bumble for either purpose, but apparently using a separate section/category of Bumble that is "finding friends only" exists, and is not unheard of.

Merchandise about Gebby Petito has begun appearing on Amazon. A search for her name on the massive online retail website brings up four associated items.

IME, it's very difficult to get listings off of Amazon, ugh. They are so concerned with not trampling on "anyone's" rights, that they wouldn't scruple to ignore reports for weeks.

I hope the Petitos have an attorney by now, as they can probably cut through the red tape of private citizen complaints and actually get these taken down posthaste.

The police report contains the same information on page one.

Again, the tribal tone is really not helpful in having a dialogue with the desire of creating a greater understanding of what happened. Actually, Brian could have been "abused" party in the relationship and also responsible for her murder (not that I believe this but I don't have evidence outside of the police report, bodycam, warrant, 911 call, etc.).
