Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Brian Laundrie isn't in that park. They are wasting time and resources looking for him. His parents claimed that was where he liked to visit. But his parents also knew he wasn't coming home or they would've left his car at the park. They picked up his car and took it home, then after 3 or 4 days, which is plenty of time to get out of the area, they reported him missing, and since they don't know where he went, they are not lying when they claim they don't know where he is. They do however know that he wasn't coming home. I think i saw an Appalacian Trail sticker on the back of the van. Those stickers as well as pins (AT) signifies that the person(s) had done a hike thru, so living off grid for long periods of time is easy for people like that. I hope he is found soon, but I am sensing he is heading for Mexico.

Brian Kensel, a retired FBI special agent, told ABC Action News reporter Michael Paluska the terrain and environment in the preserve are some of the harshest and most challenging terrains in the country.

"It is an extremely difficult environment in which to find somebody even that wants to be found a lost hiker or someone who's injured," Kensel said. "It's hard enough to find somebody like that. So if you're trying to find someone who wants to hide and who does not want to be found, that complicates even more that makes the search just that much more difficult."

Helicopters and drones are equipped with the most advanced technology around, including forward-looking infrared (FLIR).

"Things like that looking for a heat signature don't work if it's not a live person if there's no source of heat. So that is an option, of course, that has to be considered."

There are also highly sensitive listening devices that law enforcement can use to pick up even the lowest audible sounds and movement. But that is assuming Laundrie is actually in the preserve and alive.

I bet the FBI is asking for more sightings of Gabby and Brian around 8/26 - 8/30 in Grand Teton because if they can prove he was still in the area after her determined time of death, it would really cut down on the possibility that someone else did it after he left.

I am not sure how closely they can pinpoint time of death after 21+ days but I was listening to someone on one of the shows talk about how they can go further back than you'd think based on the life cycles of the flies present (like how many generations there are). I have no idea how reliable that is but I do want to learn more about it.

If you're interested, look up Dr. Gail Anderson and her research. She is one of Canada's 3 forensic entomologists.

Most people on those through hikes take food with them, and occasionally stop at pick-up points or small towns to buy more. I doubt he's the type of guy that is going to last long foraging for food. It sounds like he left with hiking equipment, so I suspect at some point in the near future he's going to need supplies, which means he'll either be stealing them or trying to find a small town to buy them. If he hasn't killed himself yet, I don't think it'll be long before someone sees him and detains him.

“I’m not saying this is the guy but whoever was on my trail camera this morning in Baker, [Florida] strongly fits the description of Brian Laundrie,” Bass wrote on Facebook. “Authorities have been contacted but people in the northwest Florida area be on the look out.”

Gabby Petito update: FBI asks for the public's help in finding Brian Laundrie as new tip emerges about his previous movements

Miranda Baker said they picked up Laundrie while he was hitchhiking in Colter Bay, Wyoming, which is not far from where Petito's remains were found. He offered to pay $200 for the ride before he even got in the car, she said.

Baker, in her TikTok videos, said that when Laundrie found out she and her boyfriend were going to Jackson Hole instead of Jackson, he got agitated, asked that the vehicle stop, and got out near the Jackson Dam. She said they dropped him off less than 30 minutes after picking him up.

The FBI said the agency would like information from anyone who may have had contact with Petito or Laundrie or who visited the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest between August 27-30 or may have seen their vehicle.

Edited to add-BL also does reference extremely long hikes on the AT (believe “hundreds” was the word he used) on his IG…eerily a post from 8/26/2020 which is why it caught my eye. Why would LE leave the rocks / wood still at the scene with the paint on? I’m guessing as they would have swabbed/extracted the evidence they needed, maybe. Hoping an expert here can advise.

It really does look like blood splatter from how it’s spread out, which could mean a weapon was used. I think this would also be backed up by the TikTok lift sighting, as if BL had used his hands, I believe they would have noticed marks on his hands.

So this could be where she was murdered. Or it could be where she was carried to and these are blood drops. The thing casting doubt it happened in the Van is that they would have found evidence in it and I think the FBI would have taken over sooner and there may have been a change in messaging to the press and public.

JMO as I have time to think and speculate whilst the threads are closed!

There seems to be holes in the timeline between Salt Lake City and Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area. I'm not confident (MOO) that the Happy Halloween Monarch/pumpkin instagram picture is from 2021. It seemed more consistent with pictures from a fall 2019 early 2020 road trip in similar areas.

We know GP checked out of the hotel in SLC with BL. There is then a FaceTime call with her mom that same day. (Do we know that call occurred inside Grand Tetons? was it on the way to Grand Tetons?). After that sightings are only of the van. Did anyone else see her at the Monarch mural? Did anyone see her buy the pumpkin? All of the sightings within Grand Teton are of the Van and BL alone.

There was a theory I read previously and totally agree with, basically stating Brian abandoned the van after GP’s murder and followed the river until being picked up on the 29th by youtuber. In the hopes that the van would be found, and his alibi would be he was hiking. In this occasion he followed the spread creek to the snake river. With this being said, I feel he is most comfortable following a river or creek. I would be searching near creeks and rivers for him. Not lakes and swampland. I also figure he can maneuver at a pace of around 10-15 miles per day, so this gives a search radius of 70-105 miles. If he were to head south, he would most likely run into more civilization so Imo he would be traveling north. I think he is between Alafia River state park and Colt creek state park.
