Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Jessica Schultz told the San Francisco Chronicle that she saw BL in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area near the park on August 26. She said she was driving behind BL while he was in the couple's white van alone, before he parked it on the side of the road.

Aug 27-Gabby and BL at Merry Piglets, a Tex-Mex restaurant, between 1 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 27, when they said an agitated BL began arguing with a waitress.

According to police, the message read: "Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls."
Schmidt told investigators that Stan is Petito's grandfather, but that she doesn't usually refer to him by his first name, the warrant, which was obtained by PEOPLE, states.

BL'S behaviour after GPS death does not resemble that of a man who is contemplating ending his life.
Mowing the lawn, going on a camping trip, using the bank card, getting an attorney.
BL gave the impression that he hated social media and GP's attempts to establish herself as a vlogger, in reality, he likely hated her receiving attention off anyone and hated that her full attention was not always on him. (Professed to hate social media and talked nonsense about how close humans are to primates yet took the time to share lengthy posts on social media himself?) - A narcissist and unlikely to kill himself, deep down he'll believe he can get away with this somehow.
The headstart he was given was planned to a T and thus far is working in his favour but rats always surface.

This will all boil down to money, or lack there of. She planned, saved, and was trying to create a source of income (on her own). I feel she expected him to do the same, and he most likely fell short. Arguments, between them and at restaurants, no money for hotel stated on body cam, the storage he had to empty, the $1000. I've been directly involved, as a witness, in a man killing his spouse over money issues (he gambled it all away and she caught him). How many here know a woman who has done everything in her power to make something happen financially only to find out their partner, who said they were doing the same, failed. She got fed up, he panicked.

Bingo: that is what I believe the motive for the killing is. He was not only leeching off her, he was getting increasingly controlling as time went on. He very likely had control issues all along, but the nature of this trip, with Gabby probably taking things very seriously and wanting to spend time working hard while BL was just drifting (and getting bored, in all likelihood), made things become explosive.
I think Gabby got fed up with him and his lack of initiative and his controlling tendencies and his apparent black rages. I think she broke up with him and told him he was on his own to get back to Florida however he could. Faced with the prospect of being stuck in WY with no money of his own and no car, a complete loss of control for a guy who had become quite comfortable with controlling everything, and already in a rage, he attacked and killed her... and took her car and her money, which he had long since come to think of as his own.
There is a good chance that we'll never know exactly what happened. But this is what I think.

Does anyone know if it has been reported that the 'supposed' flight that BL booked to go back to FL for a week was something that had been booked for a while?

I wasn't sure if this was always part of the plan, or whether it was booked last minute after the Moab incident.

There has been nothing confirmed about that supposed flight in any way shape or form. Just that GP's family said it happened.
I still have my doubts that it ever occurred.

There is really no reason to have two people's names on a vehicle title. I've been married for nine years and we have never put both of our names on titles to any of the vehicles we have owned...

You are married though. A marriage document give you some legal protections. If you are not married and your name is not on the title, you have no right to that vehicle. If you want to maintain partial ownership of a vehicle, your name better be on that title or you will end up SOL.

I am sensing many people, in non marital and some marital situations, need to take a serious look a their finances and rights. I have seen many sad situations arise when one of the partnership leaves or suddenly dies. You just can't have a verbal or informal agreement or rely on a power of attorney. You can't expect a court or even a bank to uphold a handshake deal. It is simply not their problem.

If the phone were powered off, then no, there's no way to track it.

I don't believe this is exactly true. A powered off phone, even a phone with the battery removed, still has power. Electronics with power (even very low power state) are able to transmit signals, and those signals can be detected. Phones that are off can also be remotely interrogated and even turned on, including activating camera and microphone and GPS.

Just my opinion and conjecture.

I think she had gotten serious about growing a social media presence with the long-term goal of becoming a professional travel writer, and he couldn't deal with the idea of her having her own hopes and dreams.

I am a glutton for punishment, I should just walk away from this story. But, it haunts me.

I still have not seen anything to change my mind that these two loved each other very much

Maybe if they had not tried the sometimes glamorized VanLife, they both might still be very much alive. The pressure of the whole last year has been horrible for many people. Murders seem to be at all times high in many places. I just dont see what many people on this site see....

I agree. We don't know enough to make the judgements we're making. If someone posted a bodycam of me being pulled over after an altercation with my significant other, I can only imagine the rumors that would start. Or if someone followed my every move all day and night, while I was in a state of shock and horror, with a camera in my face, so the whole world could try to dissect my thoughts, intentions, and motives. It's so easy to make things complicated. We all do it. We do it in our lives, our relationships, and we do it here when trying to make the the puzzle pieces fit. The problem is, we don't have all the pieces, so they don't fit, which is when we start forcing them and making things complicated.
