Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Well, Brian Entin has been on this for several days. I think his use of the word obtained is due to the fact that CL spoke with non-MSM types in her yard today. That's the impression I've gotten as I've scrolled through my Tweetdeck column (Laundrie key word).

Brian Entin said it'll be on Banfield, or I assume Banfield because he said 9 EST on Twitter. They're reviewing the footage, I guess to make sure it's not a bunch of just garbage. But at this point, I'm not sure anyone trusts what they say.

However, I did see a screenshot on one of the reporter's twitters from Bertolino saying he did not represent CL, so maybe it'll be a little less contradictory. I'll try to find the screenshot now

this Moab video, I know 100 percent she described the face incident the very first time i saw it on ABC news story, around september 17th or so. That's what shocked me.. Does anyone else recall seeing it on the traffic stop before this became the national news story it now is?

Yes I agree it was in the first video, but was more in the background and you couldn't hear it as clearly. I definitely didn't think it was new information in the second video. MOO

Braydon Palmer, who is just seven days into his new role leading the department while the chief is out on FMLA leave, admitted to 2News his department wasn’t well-equipped to handle a lot of public records requests.

“That’s really what we need to do in our office, ensure that we’re better prepared in the future,” Palmer said. “I think we are now.”

All eyes on Moab
Palmer assumed leadership of a small police department – with just 11 sworn officers – at a time when all eyes have been focused on the small tourist town of Moab, known for its red rocks and outdoor recreation.

“It’s been hard on my staff,” Palmer said of the national spotlight. “It’s been hard on all of us.”

“This belief that there was some malicious intent in our office for withholding or protecting that video, absolutely not,” Palmer said, adding, “I believe that the video should have been released sooner. I wish it could have been.”

“My comment as far as wishing it would have been released sooner is, it prevents this speculation that’s happening right now,” Palmer said. “Had that record been released at the same time as the first, I don’t believe me and you would be having this conversation about an issue.”

So why wasn’t the video released right away? Palmer has said the department got bogged down with too many requests for it. He also noted he wasn’t in charge until just recently.

“I would assume that the priority was, well, let’s get the originating officer’s video out – the officer who was the primary officer on scene – let’s get his information out,” Palmer said.

Yes. I remember reading that he grabbed her by the face and pushed her. I think it was in one of the pages of the police report and was released before the camera footage. Imo
