UPDATE: Search for Missing Rock Springs Man Enters Third Day

Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell said ground units, fixed-wing aircraft, and a helicopter were deployed Saturday in the Alkali Creek – Corral Creek – Salt Wells Creek area about 35 miles generally south of Rock Springs, but were unable to locate Terry Meador.

Oh my, his truck is most definitely "badly" stuck. I hope he is found soon - they are certainly looking for him. Hang in there, Terry... please...

The search for 74-year-old Terry Meador will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 3 in the Pine Mountain Area. Thus far, searches using ground units, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters have been unsuccessful.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the search is asked to contact the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office at 307-222-5316, 307-872-3866 or 307-922-5305.

Volunteers will need to be prepared for cold weather and dress appropriately.

Searchers will meet at 7 a.m. Saturday at the sheriff's office on U.S. Highway 191 South, south of exit 99 on Interstate 80, for a briefing.

People are asked to refrain from flying their drones in the general Pine Mountain, Potter Mountain and Brown's Park region on Thursday, as a helicopter from the University of Wyoming will be in the area.

A helicopter will also likely be involved in Saturday's search, so Lowell asks people to avoid flying their drones in the area that day as well.

Looks cold there at night. If it's windy, I am sure it is even worse.
It's been down in the teens at night. With wind chill (WY is known for strong winds) it would be in the minus temperatures. If he had gas in the truck, and the exhaust wasn't blocked, why didn't he stay with it where he could run the engine and the heat, unless he had no food or water. Praying he is found soon.

It looks pretty wide open and flat there, I'm surprised he didn't stay with the truck as it looked easy to spot from the air and/or ground. This isn't looking good I'm afraid.
I'm wondering if the truck getting out of control and stuck was due to a medical event (he was in his 70's) and disoriented, he wandered off. Must outdoors people know to stay with a vehicle if lost.

Nothing new to report, unfortunately.:(

Circumstances of Disappearance
Terry was last heard from by phone on October 19, 2018. Family reported that it is not unusual for Terry to leave hunting and let his phone die, but he usually comes home the same night. Terry knows the area just south of Sage Creek very well and has hunted there often. His vehicle was located near Pine Mountain in Sweetwater County. Extensive searches in the area were conducted. Terry was not located, nor were any items related to him found or recovered.

Sweetwater County Detective Appears on True Crime Podcast to Discuss Missing Person Case | Cowboy State Daily
[...]

Detective Matt Wharton appeared on the “Just the Tip-Sters” podcast to discuss the case of Terry Meador, a 74-year-old retired teacher from Rock Springs who was reported missing in October 2018 after he went looking for a place to hunt.

[...]

Wharton told host Melissa Morgan that one of the challenges with Meador’s disappearance is that Sweetwater County covers 10,000 square miles, making it the eighth-largest county in the United States, and there are only two patrol deputies to cover the county.

Additionally, the area where he was scouting for a hunting spot had spotty (at best) cell phone service.

[...]

Morgan described Meador as an Ernest Hemingway-type who seemed like a rugged, but kind, grandfather.

It was theorized that Meador lost his was way while out in the wilderness hunting and no one has been able to find his remains.

“There are not a lot of clues in this case,” Morgan said.

Details of Disappearance
Meador was last seen in Rock Springs, Wyoming on October 19, 2018. He went looking for a place to hunt and never returned. He has never been heard from again.

After his disappearance, his 2013 Chevrolet pickup truck was found abandoned, stuck in a rut on an access road about two and a three-quarter miles north of the summit of Pine Mountain in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. A photo of it is posted with this case summary.

Meador had tried to dig his way out with a shovel, but failed and apparently began walking to get help. Boot tracks were seen leading west from the truck for about a mile down an access road, then the tracks suddenly disappeared. A partially smoked cigarette of Meador's preferred brand was also found about 200 yards west of the truck.

The area Meador was scouting had poor cellular phone reception. According to his family, it wasn't uncharacteristic of him to go hunting and let his phone battery die, but he would usually return home the same night.

He had disappeared once before for two days after he stopped taking his bipolar medication and had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital, but his son stated Meador was taking his medicine as directed and was mentally stable and not suicidal at the time of his disappearance.

Authorities believe he may have gotten lost and died in the wilderness. His case remains unsolved.

Found the Truck

Searching in the dark until after midnight on the first day of the search, Bobby Hammer finally located Terry’s abandoned truck.

It was found high-centered in a large rut with Terry’s rifle, binoculars, hunting license and small cooler containing a couple bottles of water and a can of soda along with some other snacks still inside, according to the report from the Sweetwater County Sheriff.

The driver’s window was rolled down to allow Terry to presumably climb out of the vehicle given the steep angle of the truck.

BJ filed a missing person report on Oct. 26, which prompted another hunter from Rock Springs to report that he had seen the abandoned truck six days earlier, the day after Terry left home. After searching the area, that hunter followed boot tracks leading from the truck and traveling west about a mile down an access road to where the tracks disappeared, but he didn’t report it to police at that time.

A partially smoked cigarette of the brand Terry smoked was also located about 200 yards west of the truck, according to the sheriff’s report.

A glove that BJ didn’t recognize was also found in the area and was sent off for DNA testing but the results were inconclusive.

Dried mud inside the vehicle and on a shovel tossed in the back of the truck indicated that Terry had attempted – and failed – to dig his truck out of the rut.

Short of a pizza order to a family friend made in Meador’s name that was ultimately determined to be a prank from some school girls, the only other clue to the disappearance the sheriff investigated was a random call to a local hotel from Terry’s phone that might have been a misdial. From what BJ knew, his dad would have no reason for calling anyone at that hotel.

BJ has no idea where Terry might have gone. He theorizes his father might have tried to walk back to Rock Springs and made it to the highway, where he was picked up by a driver.
