62 dead, hundreds injured after tsunami strikes Indonesia

At least 62 people have died and almost 600 were injured after a tsunami in Indonesia, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation.

The tsunami hit the areas of Pandeglang, Serang and South Lampung, about 50 miles from Jakarta at the western tip of Java, Indonesia’s most populous island, early Sunday morning.

According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geological Agency, the tsunami “possibly resulted from an underwater landslide from the Mt. Krakatoa eruption” and a “tidal wave from the full moon.”

Video of the band is so hard to watch. Beyond horrifying.

Oddly, when was the other tsunami around Christmas? 2006? 2005? Krakatoa has often been mentioned as a "Super Volcano".

"On 26 December 2004, a series of huge waves triggered by a powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean killed about 228,000 people in 13 countries, mostly in Indonesia."

I wonder if there was any evidence of animals acting differently. In the last tsunami, elephants were heading for high ground well before the tsunami struck.

I remember an odd moment about 35 years ago, we had a cat that constantly purred, loudly. I picked him up one day, and he wasn't purring. That day, a 5.0 earthquake struck. Not large by any means, but I remember the cat that day. Although, we had an earthquake here a few years ago, and the cat we have now didn't act differently at all.

In addition to animals behaving differently, I'm curious why locals didn't know that a volcano eruption may cause a tidal wave.

"Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) is a new island that emerged in 1927 from Krakatoa volcano.

In August 1883, Krakatoa underwent one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in recorded history:
  • Massive tsunamis with waves of up to 41m killed more than 30,000 people
  • Thousands more were killed by hot ash
  • The eruptions were equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT - about 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945
  • The eruptions were heard thousands of kilometres away
  • World temperatures dropped by more than 1C the following year
  • The volcanic island virtually disappeared"

The volcano erupted 24 minutes prior to the tidal wave. If the local people had reflected on historic relationships between volcanic eruption and tidal wave, they should have moved inland to higher ground. Is it possible that there are many minor eruptions with minor tide changes, so people don't react anymore?

Just watching the news, and witnesses are saying that the volcano has been active since August, but last night the difference was that there were vibrations on the ground as well as volcanic action. Some people did evacuate because of the vibrations.

Anak Krakatau has had a lot of volcanic activity since the island formed nearly a hundred years ago. Apparently the latest eruption has been ongoing for about four months, so the activity just prior to the tsunami wasn't particularly abnormal. It wasn't a massive eruption like the one that destroyed the original Krakatau.

Also, in earthquake-caused tsunamis, it's common for the sea to recede before the tsunami arrives, and that didn't happen in this case.

The death toll following the tsunami caused by the Anak Krakatau volcano has risen to at least 373, Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency says.

"1,459 people are injured, while 128 remain missing," said agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a statement.

The spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency told a news conference that another tsunami is a possibility because of the continued volcanic eruptions of Anak Krakatau.

On Monday Mr Sutopo put out a series of tweets explaining why there was no early warning for this tsunami. He said that Indonesia's early warning system is set up to monitor earthquakes but not undersea landslides and volcanic eruptions, which can also generate deadly waves.

But, he added, with 13% of the world's volcanoes in Indonesia alone, it was crucial for the country to develop such system.

He confirmed there was no tsunami advance warning system on the night of the disaster, adding that because of lack of funds, vandalism to the buoys and technical faults there had been no operational tsunami warning system since 2012.

Geologist Raphaël Paris, whose 2012 study predicted the collapse of a flank of Anak Krakatau and a subsequent tsunami, said: "There is a big uncertainty on the stability of the volcanic cone now, and the probability for future collapses and tsunamis is perhaps non-negligible."

10 Animals That Can Predict Natural Disasters

Even though this tsunami was not caused by an earthquake, I still think that animal observation merits more scientific inquiry. Dogs seem to be almost intuitive in regards to changing weather conditions.

Although, some animals may be more sensitive than others. As noted with my experience with my cats, one acted differently prior to an earthquake and the other, snoozed, no change, prior to an earthquake.

Only one member of the Indonesian pop band that was swept out to sea when a tsunami hit it mid-performance over the weekend has survived the disaster, according to new reports.

Wisnu Andi Darmawan, the drummer from the popular local group Seventeen, was found dead Monday — as the group’s bassist Muhammad Awal Purbani, guitarist Herman Sikumbang, manager Oki Wijaya and crew member Rukmana Rustam were laid to rest, according to Channel NewsAsia.

That leaves frontman Riefian Fajarsyah — whose wife was also caught up in the tsunami and remained missing Monday — as the sole surviving member of the quartet after Saturday’s tsunami, which killed at least 373 people in the island nation.

Indonesia says it will build a new warning system capable of detecting tsunamis caused by undersea landslides, days after giant waves triggered by a volcano killed at least 429 people.

Installation of the new structure of buoys would start next year, a government agency told the BBC.

It is thought that activity by the Anak Krakatau volcano set off undersea landslides, causing Saturday's tsunami.

Officials say some 150 people are still missing and 16,000 have been displaced.

'New tsunami warning system' for Indonesia

Looks like the death toll will be around 600 :(

This breaks my heart. I know some aide workers who went to help with the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami earlier this year and their help was turned away by the Indonesian government. They got there and got one shipment of relief supplies unloaded and then were told by the government to leave immediately (leaving the supplies without anyone to distribute them). This organization would have stayed and pulled people out of the rubble, set up temporary medical tents in places where hospitals were destroyed, distributed food, clean water and built sanitation stations (latrines) and eventually helped people rebuild their homes. Now a new disaster has come to a different island and no one that I know of in the relief community will be sending help. Indonesia is close to heart for many reasons and I will pray their government reconsiders accepting help.

And another tsunami may be coming soon according to this article:

Oh nooooo. :(

In situations like this the numbers often go up after initial reports.

I am not surprised at all to hear about this considering the location.

(ETA: I see the numbers have risen a lot. :( )

From the below video a woman says she heard what she thought was wind, so she opened the door and the water came rushing in!
